  1. Well, really, if LPs get reissued in CD format, if they re-use the original cover or not does only make a big diff'rence to anally-retentive folks, since it's not "original" anymore anyways ... but original liner notes were often re-printed in those Prestige twofers (though if they reproduced 70s vinly twofers you might get those notes - or both sets of notes) and the original covers were mostly there in stamp size, too ... and you guys ignored my post it seems, not that it really matters, of course.
  2. Well, on "Dual" you get him in both his "roles": trombone and piano. The Mosaic Select (OOP of course) collected some of his finest. His hip-revisionist "Traditionalism Revisited" is a wonderful album. You also get to hear him with Gerry Mulligan (quartet, sextet, Concert Jazz Band) and he was a key contributor to the Thad Jones/Mel Lewis Orchestra ... and he also made a two-piano album with Bill Evans (which Blue Note/EMI has dutifully neglected, I still don't properly own it, all there currently is is some Spanish crap edition, I think) - a terrific musician!
  3. Happy Birthday, old man
  4. Those are all REALLY nice albums. My favourite is 'Walking down', because Eric Dixon's tenor playing is so strongly snaky. But are they underrated? Well, how would I know? I LURVE Bennie. MG Well, how would I know how to define "underrated" in the context of this very thread? These are good albums, I love Bennie too (and many of those other big-toned, rough'n'tumble trombone players you listed as well!), and you don't see them (or Bennie) mentioned all that often ... so I guess yeah, they might indeed be underrated.
  5. well, as for Bennie Green, he made some fine rekkids for Prestige too and you don't see them mentioned all that often: I'm generally pretty fond of two-brass quintets ... and love the cover of the one w/Art Farmer! You get Addison Farmer on bass, too - how's that for underrated!
  6. I guess I like all kinds o'bones Another one:
  7. I buy an album for Fuller, but rarely for Person ... different strokes. And I guess Fuller's Prestige albums would fit here.
  8. it's on this twofer (one tune or two of one of the albums might be missing): http://www.allmusic.com/album/trust-in-me-mw0000012925 Lots of albums mentioned here that I'd not have expected to be underrated, but what do I know ... but then yeah, George Braith, Taft Jordan, Freddie Webster ... the Prestige vaults are heavy! Lots of love for Dickerson and Jack McDuff here ... but McDuff, Willis Jackson - underrated? Today maybe, but back in their days? Not sure if Rusty Bryant is a similar case ... (re: Houston Person, I still don't quite "get" him ... it took me a while to wrap my mind around players like Fathead or Don Wilkerson, but I guess I'm still not quite ready for Person) Oh, and Clifford, go get that Hal Singer! Perfect candidate for this thread! Wonderful album indeed!
  9. Yeah, it was wonderful playing tihs all the way through yesterday! Really, no need to have any reservations about the vocals, Hamp sings it as he plays it - and whatever he does, he swings it! What I noticed were the many excellent rhythm "motors": Allan Reuss, Jess Stacy, Clyde Hart ... some underrated folks! Even when the drumming gets goofy (Hamp) or flashy (Hamp and a number of others), they hold it together in a powerful, swinging and yet relaxed manner.
  10. Great posts, guys - very thought-provoking! And actually, "Some Other Stuff" has long had a cult-following (of one) wherever I was - tremendous record!
  11. I hear you ... I really should get the NYAQ, I know! They list one distributor in Germany, but they don't list it on their site, no idea if they could get another copy for me and what it would cost - guess that might be worth a try.
  12. uhm, how did they manage to get a video onto vinyl? how much music is on there? probably less than a full CD's worth - price really is ridiculous ... I'm still tempted by the NYAQ box though, but gee! Add to that the import fees and VAT and all that sh*t and it goes up to at least 400 bucks!
  13. I've seen Trovesi's Octet at least once. I seem to recall them doing a Shakesperean tribute with strings on one of those occasions. That would have been the nonet, I assume - the "Midsummer's Dream" programme? That was kinda three trios: cl/as, g, d (the jazz/rock one) / v, vla, cello (the classical) / acc, b, tamb (the folksy) - love the disc! And yeah, would love to have caught the Ottetto ... they did indeed tour at least in 2002, there are some (one?) recordings around from European radio.
  14. kinda weird to see him do his own stuff in a repertory way ... but I'd definitely be there if it was in my neck of the woods!
  15. I'd be interested in hearing them Might be a project for The Cookers?
  16. Into disc 2 now ... had to dig this up after the discussion here and the fact that I had no memory of any vocals. No wonder: they match the music perfectly well in their relaxed manner! It's pure delight, and the singing, to my ears, does not change that a bit!
  17. What was that? Must hsve missed it! To me it seemed like prices had gone up with that last batch. That, combined with extensive classical listening, was why I still don't have most of those.
  18. Guess it would make sense to compare the two in the Cyrille box with the older editions before ordering the Lyons ... not sure my lousy ears bother anyway, so I guess I'll skip it. But I still need most of the latest batch (including the Hemphill, of which I only have two separately).
  19. I don't know details, but yes, it sounds very dire and serious.
  20. I like some d'n'b sound ... but I've heard much, much better instrumental/acoustic emulations than that - the beats are incredibly lame and Mehldau sounds totally out of ideas to me - and mind me, I quite enjoyed "Largo" when it first appeared, I'm a 90s kid of some sorts (though mostly I grew up in my own time I guess, after all how many middle-class european 13 year olds ask their aunts and uncles to get "Bags' Groove" and "Nippon Soul" for x-mas?). Just doesn't do it for me, no matter from what angle I try and approach it (though I've not heard the album, only some live recordings such as a concert from London captured by the Beeb). Anyway, I think Mehldau is often a bit underrated/downplayed/sneered-at-too-much in circles such as this splendid forum
  21. "Vespers" is still pretty effin' great (and Aebi, btw, is starving in Belgium ... tough luck, it's not like being an artist is easy over here, but this really is tough). I've got all the Lyons discs, too ... not sure if remastering might justify buying the box. Other than that, I'm most pleased by the Lacy and Trovesi (only know one of the albums, I think, and have no exact idea what the others are like, but I just love this guy). Will have to check out what's on the Blackwell (and the Ra). As for Hamilton, I'm surely in for the ride, no matter what.

  23. Mehliana brings me to sleep quickly. But he's made some good stuff!
