    A BBS is really about what is happening now. Archives are fun for reminiscing, but a living board is where it's at. Not a dead one.

    This might also lead to the core of AAJ's problems. It seems to be a little bit more lively however. I started to check it out again, maybe twice a week, after several months were I only accidentaly went there.

    There was that lady who wrote her "memoirs", Catherine Millet. I cannot come up with other names from memory, does not interest me that much...

    And I did not intend to say that you were WRONG by any account!

    But: I maintain that France will only be the "grande nation" again after they have given away the Alsace, either to Germany or to UK - mostly because of food-related factors... ;)

    And yes, let's have another bottle of good red wine on rooster and his future "orgasmos"... :g

    I guess we don't have to care that much, do we?

    We can go over to AAJ and do some search, and the wealth of information from the BNBB will be avaiable again, which is cool, but I guess we'll continue here, won't we? I at least will do so for sure.

    And please don't ask me for a copy of that rare Sonny Clark session! I've got it somewhere. But it's going to get me hours - not to mention a damaged back - to get at it.

    My jazz CDs are alphabetically, with a "Various" section at the end (there you find stuff like "World of Jazz", "Birth of Third Stream", the "Jazz & Cinéma" series, the Lost Sessions etc.). I try to order albums by date of recording, as good as is possible, but that often gets mixed up of course.

    Then I always have several piles of CDs and LPs lying around to be listened to "right now"... And piles of Tapes and Minidiscs recently filled with broadcasts from radio...

    so it's part chaos part order.

    Maybe the taxonomy tree printed on Diderot/D'Alemberts Encyclopédie could offer further help B)

  19. Cuban pianist Ruben Gonzalez dies

    HOLY SHIT! This is SAAAD news! :(

    And I post in the KD and Dolphy threads before even seing this!

    Gonzalez was a great musician. And a great human being, as could be seen in the Buena Vista Social Club film of Wim Wenders (I just watched that sunday night on tv!).

    They're dropping like flies... no wonder, considering their age, but still very, very sad!

    Check out "Introducing Ruben Gonzalez" (on World Circuit), his first of two records made after the success of Buena Vista Social Club. Some great GREAT piano playing.

    I am sure that I have read that KDs playing was erratic but I've never been disappointed by his work. So many good albums too hard to choose a favourite.

    Currently waiting for one of the Time CDs. Hope "Trumpet Toccata" will see the light of day as an RVG or Conn.

    Wouldn't it be amazing if the tapes for "Jazz Prophets" Vol 2 turned up....some chance...

    And yes, "Trompeta Toccata" - anyone heard anything about this coming out again? It should really be an RVG, together with In'n'Out, so we would have all five albums together...

    And the Jazz Prophets Vol. 2 - I think that has been discussed from time to time, however I can't remember any details. I'd certainly love to hear it! Vol. 1 is among my very favorite KD records!

    Adrian, I don't know if the erratic thing had more to do with KDs career in general rather than his playing. He seemed not to get his things together. I mean he was with Bird, which should have granted him a great start - but just not everybody who's an excellent musician makes an excellent leader/manager/accountant and whatever that includes, too!

    Dorham seemed to pop up and disappear from time to time.

    What did he do between Bird and the Jazz Messengers?

    What after the Messengers? He did not lead his own band in the years he made his now OJC records, didn't he?

    And why did he only make "Whistle Stop" for Blue Note at that time? Was that a lame seller? Or did he fall out with Lion (which seems not to be the case as he entered the Blue Note roster again later with Henderson, Hill, and as a leader)?

    What did he do in the first years of the sixties? And what after the five albums with Joe Henderson?

    I get it he was in Europe, too?

    And what's his story from say 1964 to his death?

    Lots of questions... maybe some answers are known by somebody here?

    The partnership that he shared with Hank Mobley in The Jazz Messengers and other later dates was amazing. One of my personal favorite jazz duos. The chemistry and overall approach they had to music was so in sync. When listening to a record like Whistle Stop (that borders on the supernatural) you are easily and effortlessly whisked away to a place much better than the one we're in...and for 40 minutes or so you're in the best nightclub in the world while Kenny & Hank weave their spell.

    I first heard Whistle Stop when it came out as an RVG, and I loved it right from the beginning! One of my favorite RVGs!

  22. AOTW December 8-14. Tina Brooks Minor Move

    danas, aren't you a little bit unfair? I mean, it's been some time since I listened to the Brooks albums now, but as I heard them first when I got the Mosaic (I was one lucky bastard finding this one for around 70 or 80$ worth three or four years ago), I started with track one from Minor Move, and that one is a highlight of Brooks' whole output, in my humble opinion. Blakey & Watkins of course are a great team, then I AM an avid Clark admirer, and Mogie turns in such a great solo... that must have been a very frightening moment for Tina, having to play his first solo on his first leader date after Morgan's and Clark's homeruns, no?

    not to hijack this thread, I like poetry a lot, but I wonder, has the "no poetry after Auschwitz" debate hit the US, too?

    not really; i mean, as idiotic as this country often is, i think that's rightfully seen as inane & i write that as one w/almost the entire maternal side of my family lost in the war (poland and latvia). if anything, i'm offended by the very suggestion, it smacks of gross self-importance and repression.

    clem, thanks for this information. That was crap indeed! But a somehow understandable over-reaction, in my opinion.

    I'm a HUUUGE fan of Robert Walser - not sure if I did ask you that, but going from your Bernhard question I guess you don't, but: do you read german? In my opinion (and in that of some of the few Walser fans among literary scientist or whatever you call them in english) it's the short stories, "Erzählungen", or - the best term, I think - "Prosa-Miniaturen" (you can translate that to miniatures of/in (?) prose). If you do understand german, I guess you might try! The only usable german Walser edition appears as Suhrkamp paperbacks. You sure find them all on Amazon Germany doing a search for Robert Walser and Suhrkamp.

    Feel free to ask more, it's kind of difficult however for me to express these things in english...

    I love the few books of Bernhard I read so far, but I am no expert whatsoever. Some of his books are extremely funny (you gotta love austrian literature, though, and be open to cynicism of the highest order), others are rather difficult. His basic thing is to repeat himself, create never-ending phrases and also sort of cycles in which the narration evolves, going back almost to start again, and then going a place just next to the one were the last cycle went... difficult to describe. I guess you don't loose on the structure reading him in translation, but you sure fail to experience the "sound".

    Should we open a new thread (in addition to this one dedicated to poetry and the "now reading" one)?

    Wycliffe Gordon plays a solo on one of the two unreleased outtakes from the Herbie Nichols Project (available in the download section on the Palmetto Records homepage), that fits in perfect!

    I don't know Gordon well, in fact I hardly know him, but that's a great solo he plays there! Check it out!

    (Check out all those downloads! There's two unedited tracks that were released on Hill's A Beautiful Day available in their unedited form, some jams, and free impros, some outtakes, and three live tracks by Bobby Previte's cool "Bump the Renaissance" band recorded on their tour in Europe)
