I love the Bohemia sets - the Prophets and the Blakeys! No need to compare the Bohemias with the Brownie ones - we can have and enjoy both of them! And they're quite different in style anyway! I think Watkins and Mobley make a huge difference - the whole feel of the band has evolved pretty much between these two dates - and Brownie's marvellous playing (though his relative youth shows sometimes, in my opinion) notwithstanding, I personally may even prefer the Bohemias of Blakey. (Sacrilege, but who cares...) ubu

By the way, the Verna Gillis providing the "female voice" parts - is that the same lady who produces/stages or whatever the "soundscape series" (released on Universal/Verve)? ubu

Thanks for sharing, Rooster T! ubu FOR THE RECORD, Michael said he's talking with Andrew about it, and NOTHING is at all certain about whether any of those unreleased Andrew Hill sessions will ever see the light of day. Personally, I would guess that there's only a 50/50 chance that Andrew will end up wanting them released. Maybe he will, but there's every chance that maybe he won't. Nobody's more excited about the posibility of hearing all those unreleased Hill sessions than I am. But we need to be clear that this is probably very much an "iffy" project, at this point. I don't want to give the impression otherwise, and don't want to raise expectations beyond just the "maybe" stage. I don't know Andrew (I only just met the man for two minutes last July), but my gut tells me that this really could go either way. Let's all keep our fingers crossed, and hope for the best. you know, Rooster, the notion that... maybe... was enough to get me excited early this morning! I read your post well, but as Andrew has agreed to Passing Ships - after us hearing he won't agree to anything at all -, let's keep our fingers crossed indeed! ubu

Co Streiff is another highly competent swiss jazz musician. She's got a recent CD out on Intakt, Qattara. Quite a good record, by the way. The band (a sextett, Ms Streiff plays alto and soprano sax) presents a good mix of free and groove. Here is a link to Irene Schweizer's records on Intakt. ubu

By the way, I saw the Three Guys (Konitz-Swallow-Motian) live, in or around 1997, and it was one of the best live concerts I ever saw! Konitz blew mind, and Motian was really pushing. Swallow's on-stage persona is quite strange, but he always delivered when I saw him. ubu

This set, along with the live Albert Ayler, the Exploding Customer disc and the Jemeel Moondoc Tentet disc are all on my list of Aylers to pick up asap. Jan i putting out some essential discs. The Jimmy Lyons box is fantastic and I have really enjoyed all of the single discs on Ayler I have heard so far. This one looks interesting indeed! John, the Ayler release is a good one, too!
