  1. That's true, Lon! I did not want to jump a skeith, by the way, just clearly express my feelings about that wonderful date. ubu
  2. Found a Jimmy Witherspoon CD for a good price in some sale bin today which has some tracks with Grooves backing him: Witherspoon-voc; Teddy Edwards-ts; Paul Moer-p; Groove-org; Herman Mitchell-g; Jimmy Bond-b; Frank Butler-d. Rec. LA, 1963. In Blues Looser's Blues Please Send Me Someone To Love Life's Highway Cry The Blues Out Blues The CD is on WestWind (WW 2138) and has ten tracks of Spoon with the Mulligan quartet (Rowles, Vinnegar, Mel Lewis) and Ben Webster, which are pretty good, too. Recorded Hollywood, Ben Shapiro's Renaissance Club, 1959. Anyone knows this disc? ubu
  3. Yeah, Jim, you know, reading the comments on how you guys have developped since making the CD - it would be great to see/hear you live! Just be sure you tell us europeans early enough when you make it over the water... Hope you back gets better! ubu
  4. Here's another one in need... Maybe I can be added to the couw-tjobbe-... list? Afraid I'm not able to burn right now (but soon will, in case someone needs them, too, this side of the water). ubu ubu talks german, too, by the way, MERDRE!
  5. A GREAT FILM!! This is one of my ten or twenty favorite films! Love it, seen it several times in the movies and on tv (though I always prefer going to a theatre). ubu

That's a pretty cool one! You know, I'm maybe as far from being a patriot as one can get, BUT I got to admit that there are some good aspects to this country - Hat being one, for sure, Intakt another, ... ubu
  7. Thanks, Mike! I'm working on getting one... ubu

    Stan Getz

Lots of good ones have been mentioned already, I'll repeat some of my favorites, nevertheless: - The Complete Roost 3CD set: essential, not just for Getz, but PRETTY ESSENTIALL JAZZ, in my opinion! - the bossa dates: Getz/Gilberto, Jazz Samba, Jazz Samba Encore, Getz/Gilberto #2 - the West Coast dates - look if you can find the 3CD set that held them all. Othewise, the albums were reissued since on single CDs: The Steamer, West Coast Jazz, Award Winner, and some tracks on: ...) - & the Cool Sounds (Verve) - this has some great things on it. Tony Fruscella, Bob Brookmeyer... - Plays (Verve - a nice companion to the Roost set, more Jimmy Raney, and good one!) - Poetry, a beautiful duet album with Albert Daily (p) recently reissued by Blue Note - of the Concord and Barron stuff I know little yet, but Anniversary and Serenity (both on Gitanes/Emarcy/Verve/Universal) are very good. - in the Universal "Jazz in Paris" series, there has been a Getz album, too. Like that very much. It's called Getz in Paris or something. You should be able to find that for a good prize. It features the Getz quartet with Gary Burton, Steve Swallow and Roy Haynes. ubu

Got a broadcast from Denzler/Delbecq/Labarriere/Pfamatter! Great group! Hey guys, you realize at least some of these are swiss, dontcha!?! ubu
  10. Uh, I'm rather embarrassed I did not recognize this one! I LOVE that disc! Jim, you better get that CD fast! The drummer's called something like "Winnie the Poo", which is fitting, as the bass player's that guy making pee pee constantly on that much beloved date with Conrad Yeatis also aboard...) And Eric Alexander IS great! I have fond memories of the one time I saw him life! ubu B)
  11. Could not disagree more about the "other vocalists" part! The sides with Helen Merrill are some of the best vocal jazz I EVER heard! ubu
  12. Whew! Boogaloo sisters all over the house! I'm in the middle of "You Don't Want To Do That", and HELLYEAH! I like it! Great CD, guys! Gotta listen a couple of times, but I like it right from the beginning! "J.S. Goes To Washington" is a very cool tune! ubu
  13. Was Black Lion actually functioning as a label producing and releasing its own records? Becasue they also had stuff recorded for other labels in their catalogue. Some of their stuff is currently being reissued here: http://www.1201music.com/indexlow.html Not the nicest looking reissues, I agree, and they're expensive, too (at least here in Switzerland), but FINALLY they also gave us back Vol. 2 of Monk's London sessions (they've had Vols. 1 & 3 in their catalogue for some time now). They do not yet list it on their websited, but amazon.de has it (released last october) and I saw it in a store yesterday. ubu
  14. I’ve read that before, but I’m unconvinced. Looking over the list of RVGs I can’t find any title that without the RVG series would have been obvious as a Connoisseur rather than a regular release. The closest is probably Groovin’ At Small’s Paradise, but it is still by a major name. Hutcherson's Dialogue, maybe some of the Shorters (why do some of them get RVG treatment while others were Conns? - maybe because it would have taken longer to get them all out as Conns?), and Tony Williams "Lifetime". Stilistically "Out to Lunch" and the "Golden Circle" ones would have fitted better in the Conn-series, too. But everybody (?!?) knows and loves Dolphy and Ornette. ubu
  15. Yup, the single swiss poster can. I read a story yesterday about that marine, don't remember his name, who was in the first gulf war and wrote a book about it later. He refers to the marines cutting their hair so they only have some on their scalps or something. I can't remember his exact words, but the idea I got was what you describe, Chaney. ubu
  16. Very interesing discussion here! It's been several years since my first and only viewing of this great film, so I cannot jump in the discussion. Thanks for all that info re the "grainy" parts etc! ubu

No problem about Orange Slice, Chaney! You'll get some Brötz someday, to get over it ubu
  18. Hey, but that one was in the Running Low/Last Chance list for at least a short time. And then, I don't think the sudden disappearance has got something to do with Verve having stuff out by Stuff, themselves. That two CD set has been around already when the Mosaic appeared. That can't be the reason, it seems. ubu
  19. This is really strange! I got my set maybe a year ago, maybe even two. I was really VERY VERY surprised by the music! Absolutely love it! That two CD set linked above, however, for all those who missed it, does indeed contain some of the best sessions in the set. Get that one as long as it's around (it's been around for many years, I think, being one of those 3on2 sets Verve did in the second half of the nineties). ubu
  20. Well, thanks! Seems like one to look for! ubu
  21. Tom - I do hear no similarities at all, too! Someone took it for clarinet, even. This really indicates how different a sound these two players have. You would NEVER take Lacy's soprano for a clarinet, wouldn't you? I like both of these, by the way. And the guy in question is a rather important figure, too. ubu
  22. That was my very first thought, too! But I really have no idea who this could be. One of the highlights, in my opinion, though ubu
  23. What am I? Chopped liver? My record is still impressive: whenever I presume to post the Tanno News, I get no response and few page views. My parents would be so proud. I quit looking at Tanno and TOC news - CANNOT AFFORD TO EVEN LOOK AT THAT!! ubu

    Booker Little

I think everything has been mentioned now, but: if you LOVE the Candid album, there's some alternate takes on "Candid Dolphy". The other stuff there, I think, has been added to the respective CDs (it's all sideman-Dolphy, he did not have his own Candid date), but the tracks from the Little date were not added to "Out Front" and can only be heard on that Dolphy disc. the "And Friend" album is a great one, indeed! I still got to listen to the Museum of Modern Art and the Time albums, but from what I have heard, "And Friend" is every bit as good as "Out Front" and the stuff with Dolphy. ubu
  25. Berigan, make sure you get hold of a copy of the Avenue/Rhino reissue of "This Time the Drum's on Me" as long as that one is around. Originally on Bethlehem, it features Conte Candoli, Frank Rosolino and GREAT Dexter Gordon. Recorded in 1955. ubu
