  1. Check out Oscar Brown singin' it on "Sin & Soul"! I don't own many of Timmons' own records yet, but I love his contributions to many sideman dates for Blakey, and most of all, Cannonball! That album they made live in San Francisco is a real cool one! The Trio in Person disc on Riverside is another winner! ubu
  2. Reflective in this case means that it reflects the sound waves it's exposed to. A non-reflective surface is acoustically damped in some way; it could be a bookshelf full of books, a drapery, etc. Thanks, Daniel! Something to be learned every day... ubu
  3. Milan, of course I would have preferred a complete Basie set, too (and I read your posts on that topic)! But as sound is soo good on this 4CD set, I don't regret having spent some money on it. Re. Ornette - I think I understand and hear what John refers to. The spontaneous flow, the internal logic, the ease with which things are handled, changes discarded, played over - the source of this being a similar one with Lester and Ornette. Makes sense for me. ubu
  4. my words! ubu
  5. Uh, I missed that party going on here! ubu
  6. Huh? Non-reflective? What's that? (And what's a reflective background?) (Audio-dummy's question...) ubu -_-
  7. Strange how things go! Thanks for explaining this, brownie! ubu
  8. So the reason their nice Avenue Jazz/Bethlehem reissue series got lost in some merger around 2000? Those were OOP reeeeally fast! They are not as active as far as jazz is concerned, as they were in the nineties, no? I love their Coltrane and Dolphy boxes! And then the Mingus one! They should have done more of these, instead of all the "Anthologies"! ubu
  9. Uh, we could start a new thread and copy our AAJ posts into it, without any coherence, of course... ubu
  10. Back on topic: I had some problems, too, yesterday. At noon I could log in (not in the morning), and somewhen late night I was out again. The funniest thing was: I could get to the site by replacing ".org" with ".net", but then I could not log in. And I was still listed in the active users list for some time. So I was standing there, unable to log in and post, and see, I AM still logged... speak of multiple personality... ubu B)
  11. come on mike! you only need 20 more to beat ubu! ubu
  12. come on mike! you only need 20 more to beat ubu! ... lost!
  13. come on mike! you only need 20 more to beat ubu! get...
  14. So 2-8 is ANOTHER one I own. BUT: I NEVER HAVE HEARD IT YET! I got that Jarrett 75/76 box recently from someone on the board, and did not yet listen to anything on it. ubu
  15. yup. and the only reason for me to pick that Select up, as I have both Conns and a TOCJ of Star Bright. All very good stuff, so my expectations on "Soundin' Off" are pretty high! ubu

    Funny Rat

Will do so! I only have one of his Nimbus CDs (Vol. 8, if memory serves right) so far. I picked up the Wallin 2CD set recently - some great music, I listened closely to disc 2 only, so far, which consists of trio live material. Very strong stuff! ubu
  17. So they didn't inlcude that in the Vogue reissue series a few years ago? No. There's some cool stuff with Don Byas on that Vogue disc, however! ubu
  18. Oh, and what we hear on this disc is a typical example of why there was not THE bop tenorist. All those guys (the one in question, early Dexter, early Lucky, early Yusef, and several others) were standing somewhere between swing and bop, taking from the great 30ies musicians (Hawk, Pres, Benny Carter, Hodges) and trying to absorb some of the Bird-stylings. So this might be one of the reason (another being not listening closer...) why rather many names popped up. They were not the individual musicians they became later on in their careers. ubu
  19. All frantic indeed! I never heard this guy's BN date(s?), and never been very taken by his playing. Got two or three CDs and they're alright. And he seems not to produce very much anymore today, touring with some all star groups etc... However, he was/is a good tenor player, able on alto, too, and great on flute. I love his work with that strange-bearded-and-capped-man the best. ubu
  20. I will try and see "Notti di cabiria" - missed it (partially because I was tired and knew Masina was in there and thus felt more comfortable staying home...) It's been a long time since I saw Giulietta, and it did not make such a good impression on me, either. Though Masina certainly was the perfect fit for the role she had to play there. ubu
  21. and one more I have (and love) - but hey, the last track's 17 minutes! And where the f%&@ is the man with the saxophone? Was he edited out?!? He not laying out on that track, isn't he? The man on the piano is DA SHIT! One of my favorite musicians (I still have to save some $$ for the Select) - I discovered him through getting all his nineties stuff on Verve/Gitanes, some marvellous records! Buy this one as long as it's around! ubu re tenor sax: he plays some nice flute on this track ...... re: pianist: I LOVE him, have 80% of his records. Oh, I mixed the track up with another one in memory! I don't have the CD, and no possibility to listen to music now anyway, being at work... Thanks for clearing this one! Got to spin that disc tonight! ubu
  22. Good idea! Could be from that four-track big band session, with some Tadd Dameron arrangements and Fats in the band. Don't have the Mosaic at hand, but maybe someone can find out? Oh happy guesses! I thought you knew your early Blue Note modern jazz sessions better! Those hearing a connection to Dizzy's late 1940's big band are closer than they think. Click here! Again link does not lead anywhere! Sorry! I do not know early BN particularly well, but I DID hear similarities to Dizzy's big band, at least ubu
  23. Mike, your link to #8 does not work! And would you mind give some more hints re #9 and #10? ubu
  24. No, I didn't. You have it? Would be nice if you could enclose a photocopy at some occasion. I spend so much money on special music magazines (down beat, Jazz Times, Jazz Podium, Fono Forum, World of Music, Drums & Percussion, Sticks, Concerto, to name only the subscriptions) that I hesitate to spend on a newspaper - and I hardly have the time to read it. And reading all the bad news in the political section turns me off. I still have it. Remind me of it if I forget! ubu
