After reading everybody's comments on Morris, I guess the Shipp/Morris "Thesis" is one I can live without, or anyone can recommend that? ubu

I picked up some more hats (and I'm ruined now...): Mat Maneri, So What Koglmann, the Duke Ellington tribute with Lee Konitz Maneri /Shipp duo, after reading D.D.'s assessment Shipp's Strata (OOP I think, as is the Maneri/Shipp, no?) I will report on Koglmann and Maneris. They clearly don't seem to be everybody's cup of tea. However, I like that Papa Jo disc ("Tenderly") rather well after initial listening, and I would certainly like to get the OOP one Hans posted above, as well as Mat's OOP "Acceptance" - working towards my own private hat Mosaic... ubu

It's only those 20-bit or what the hell they call it that sound dreadful. The other ZYX pressings use the US mastering and sound fine. I know, but generally, they don't have those others! They have lots of the dreaded 20-bit discs, and if they have some others (I picked up the Clifford Jordan "Mosaic", for instance), they want lots of money for them (more than 20 euros!). ubu

Another one for no limits, as for the reason why, see comments the others made above. ubu

Cool, Lon! Never saw that one! Thanks for sharing it! ubu

Favorite new BN release from the last 5 years???

One that has not been mentioned often here: I just had another listen to it today: Joe Chambers, Mirrors. A tremendous album by a great composer and master percussionist! ubu -
I listened to the Ellington tribute yesterday - a very good disc! Thanks, jazz1, for recommending it to me! ubu

deus, here's the link to the homepage of the Fotomuseum Winterthur: http://www.fotomuseum.ch/ (guess you know it, but...) Will check for that book! ubu

Of course you know there IS a Bley/Peacock duo album around recently reissued by Universal France (?): Sorry for going off-topice, but if you Bley/Peacock fans were not aware of this one, GET IT! Nothing to add about Koglmann, as I have not yet checked him out. ubu

Late, I stumbled upon that site last week, did not really check it out yet. Thanks for mentioning it! I have not yet checked out Koglmann either, but he's on my radar. David, if you ordered from cds-24.de - I ordered something from them via Amazon France and I just got a money refund Hope it doesn't end this way with you! By the way, the Chapin box is on its way to me! (from Amazon Germany) ubu

I will consider the Tjader albums. The LPRs can be found rather cheap. Listened to the Gary Burton & Keith Jarrett/Gary Burton-Throb twofer this morning. He sounds too clean for me to really like him, I guess. The country-styled things on Throb, the violin etc, have a haunting quality (parallels to what Charlie Haden is doing these days?). Then I just found my copy of Terry Gibbs' LPR, that "Plays Jewish Melodies in Jazztime" - it's been some time since I listened to it, but I remember I liked it quite a bit. Gotta listen to this and to the Dickerson VME (which I absolutely love, but which is my only Dickerson so far). ubu

Yep, I am. I've been wanting to see that museum for quite some time now ... haven't gotten around to it yet - but I will, one day. One of my fave photographers is Franz Roh (1890-1965), but it is very difficult to find any of his stuf online in a quality which is worthhy of his absolutely stunning photos. So, I won't link to anything here. But there are so many great photographers. I could put a hundred into this thread off the top of my head. But, not enough time, especially now (I'm supposed to be in bed). Maybe another day. Cheers! deus, newly opened, just opposite the Fotomuseum, there's the Fotostiftung Schweiz - so you get twice as much to see if you make it! I just got the programme for 2004: Lukas Felzmann (never heard of him), Jean-Pascal Imsand (ditto), and Jakob Tuggener (great swiss photographer, 1904-1988) coming up. Did you see the film "Henri Cartier-Bresson: Biographie eines Blicks"? Great one! You see the grand old man, talking about his life and looking at his photographs, making his sly remarks, trying to stylize himself as much as he can, but a great film, nevertheless! Do you know the swiss magazine called "du"? They had numbers featuring the works of Bischof, Frank, Freud, Salgado and others. Worth looking for! Never heard of Franz Roh. Is there anything especially good around? Some book I could fine in a good library? ubu

Ain't she beautiful? Halsmann.

This book then is most highly recommended! One of my favorite photographers, I saw the corresponding exhibition in London a couple of years ago. I am a fan of his portraits! ubu

deus seems to be a real lover of photography! Make sure if you're in/around Zurich someday you don't miss the Fotomuseum Winterthur! The very first museum I think exclusively dedicated to photography. Saw some great exhibitions there. August Sander's "Menschen des 20. Jahrhundert" were very impressing! One of my favorite photographers, as far as fashion and style is concerned, the late great Jeanloup Sieff:

Same problem here. Too many new acquisitions anyway, and here they want some 25 euros for Hyena discs, which is rather ridiculous... And I think the EH is the only one they have! However, nothing at all wrong with EH in my opinion! Nothing wrong at all! I really love him - yes, I did contribute a little bit to the EH Corner, so... sorry! ubu

Thanks Mike! But rather than listen, I might get the REAL one from the US right away! It's not only sound - I don't like the flimsy ZYX-digi-packaging either. However, this sounds like one to check out. And maybe a good way to get to know Tjader. What you say about Bags makes some sense for me. Well, his work with Monk is exceptional, but that's forties, and we're talking sixties here. I have that 2CD Verve set "Much in Common" by Ray Brown/Milt Jackson, and while there's lots of fine playing there (Cannonball's providing the highlights, in my opinion), there's not much that really sticks to the memory. How do you rate the Jackson/Thompson recordings? I have only heard one LP's worth of them, and have the "Plenty, Plenty Soul" CD - which is fabulous! I'd love to hear all those dates collected in a neat box! Regarding Roy Ayers: please make a recommendation or two! The only Ayers I have is on that very nice Jack Wilson Conn CD. I'd sure like to hear some more! Anyone here has heard Teddy Charles' tribute to Hampton recorded in the early sixties for Bethlehem? That's a very funny album! He's much more modern than Hamp, yet the music is really in a Hampton vein (I think the man on tenor - Zoot Sims, if memory serves me right - even does that Jacquet solo on "Flyin' Home", or at least he does some very similar honking). ubu

That's such a marvellous film! So stylish! And Moreau is at the top of her beauty, indeed! Nuits sur les champs élysées... Love it! (and her ) ubu
-
Had an earful of "Dissonant Characters" and it's excellent indeed! big once more for Ellery Eskelin, who in my opinion is one of the most interesting tenor men around these days! And keeping in mind he was around for almost ten years, let's hope he will be around and kickin' for some decades to come! ubu

Thanks for mentioning the other Zingaro disc, David! Will look for it! Uh, me too looking for "Multiplication Table" and "Rara Avis" as well as some others... How about the Maneri's? Noone has any comments to make? I found "Tenderly" (by Joe, with Mat) rather interesting, and am willing to look for some others of their hats. ubu
