Sieff again

deus seems to be a real lover of photography! Make sure if you're in/around Zurich someday you don't miss the Fotomuseum Winterthur! The very first museum I think exclusively dedicated to photography. Saw some great exhibitions there. August Sander's "Menschen des 20. Jahrhundert" were very impressing! One of my favorite photographers, as far as fashion and style is concerned, the late great Jeanloup Sieff:

Same problem here. Too many new acquisitions anyway, and here they want some 25 euros for Hyena discs, which is rather ridiculous... And I think the EH is the only one they have! However, nothing at all wrong with EH in my opinion! Nothing wrong at all! I really love him - yes, I did contribute a little bit to the EH Corner, so... sorry! ubu

Thanks Mike! But rather than listen, I might get the REAL one from the US right away! It's not only sound - I don't like the flimsy ZYX-digi-packaging either. However, this sounds like one to check out. And maybe a good way to get to know Tjader. What you say about Bags makes some sense for me. Well, his work with Monk is exceptional, but that's forties, and we're talking sixties here. I have that 2CD Verve set "Much in Common" by Ray Brown/Milt Jackson, and while there's lots of fine playing there (Cannonball's providing the highlights, in my opinion), there's not much that really sticks to the memory. How do you rate the Jackson/Thompson recordings? I have only heard one LP's worth of them, and have the "Plenty, Plenty Soul" CD - which is fabulous! I'd love to hear all those dates collected in a neat box! Regarding Roy Ayers: please make a recommendation or two! The only Ayers I have is on that very nice Jack Wilson Conn CD. I'd sure like to hear some more! Anyone here has heard Teddy Charles' tribute to Hampton recorded in the early sixties for Bethlehem? That's a very funny album! He's much more modern than Hamp, yet the music is really in a Hampton vein (I think the man on tenor - Zoot Sims, if memory serves me right - even does that Jacquet solo on "Flyin' Home", or at least he does some very similar honking). ubu

That's such a marvellous film! So stylish! And Moreau is at the top of her beauty, indeed! Nuits sur les champs élysées... Love it! (and her ) ubu

Had an earful of "Dissonant Characters" and it's excellent indeed! big once more for Ellery Eskelin, who in my opinion is one of the most interesting tenor men around these days! And keeping in mind he was around for almost ten years, let's hope he will be around and kickin' for some decades to come! ubu

Thanks for mentioning the other Zingaro disc, David! Will look for it! Uh, me too looking for "Multiplication Table" and "Rara Avis" as well as some others... How about the Maneri's? Noone has any comments to make? I found "Tenderly" (by Joe, with Mat) rather interesting, and am willing to look for some others of their hats. ubu

B) I guess I did... another sign I should read better... But as I do not really intend to post there... ubu

I got a confirmation mail by said Ben, telling me to print out the form included, let it be signed by mom/pop and fax it back... Seems like they don't expect grown ups to register there! ubu

That's what I was afraid of thanks! ubu

Hey you fans, make some Tjader recommendations, please! Maybe I find some money somewhere (though not in my purse, for sure...) How's the OJC with Getz (it pops up in its ZYX-24-bit incarnation here). ubu

You're somewhat obsessive about them "doorbells", it seems!?! I cannot vote, actually, as there's too many on your list I don't know at all, or know only very little of their recorded output. I love Hutcherson's work on Blue Note, he's playing on some of my favorite albums of that era (Destination Out, Idle Moments, Out To Lunch, Lifetime, Stick Up!, Dialogue, you name it!). I saw him live a couple of years ago (in one of those dreaded all star affairs) with Ray Brown, Kenny Burrell, Hank Jones and Mickey Roker. Hutcherson was replacing the deceased Milt Jackson, who should have been on that tour. It became a Milt-tribute tour, and Hutcherson was very unimpressing, to say the least. He did not make the impression to care what was happening at all, standing there totally detatched. Jackson is someone I should explore further. However, I like his collaborations with Coltrane and Cannonball very very much. He is a great blues player! This is almost everything I can say about them modern doorbellists. Got some Hampton, got some things featuring Dave Friedman, one or two with Dickerson, but that's about it. ubu

1. it's not spam if you signed up to receive their emails. 2. you won't get mosiac news from blue note. 3. remove your name from bn's list and get your deletion/new release news here. I know it ain't exactly what one calls "spam", but still... Anyway, I always thought the Mosaic infos and Blue Note infos were coming from the same sender, no? It's Trueblue that sends the infos on OOP BN titles, for instance, no? ubu

Me too, rather from vinyl to CD than the other way round. I got several things on LP that I never had a chance to pick up on CD (the Monk/Nichols Savoy, Mingus at Monterey, some cheap bootlegs by Miles, and Tadd Dameron etc). Sometimes, if something gets reissued on CD, I update, but not always. Then Blue Note is a special case, as I love lots of their covers. I got several Conns on LP and CD, and one or two on LP only (I would have them on CD, too, had I found them in time). ubu

Sounds like one to get! Thanks for posting that info, Chaney! ubu

You seem to be pretty obsessive about doorbellists, Mike These three all look good! The problem is: all non-ZYX-remastered Fantasy releases are fully price here (33 CHF, currently around 25$ or 21 Euros) - another swiss craze - which as often as not keeps me away from buying them, or buying those I found cheap rather than those I would have wanted to get right now... Rather nice for a musician to pass away in the middle of a recording session - I did not know about this. He's certainly one of those who went far too early. ubu

Let me add two more (I posted them in the Barney Wilen thread, page two there; had pains to find them! Google doesn't help, I think I got them from some polish website or some other very unexpected place):
-
Gosh! I was in attendance at that concert (my first concert in Paris, shortly after I moved here), but I haven't heard the album in years and I had completely forgotten that Wilson sang "Crucificado" at it! Wow! That must have been a GREAT concert to attend, Tom! Any memories to share? ubu

Blue Note seems to develop into a spamming organisation! Two or three days ago another Norah mail, and yesterday I got the Wynton stuff twice! Now I'm not one of the bashers of current Blue Note - that thread discussing highlights of the last five years showed to everybody how many fine albums they did produce lately - but somehow, hey, I want the "real" information about CDs going OOP, Mosaic news etc, but do I really need to get all that strange spam-stuff, too? ubu
-
jazz1, I got the two CDs from Cadence today! I hope I'll find some time over the weekend to give them a spin! I will keep you posted. ubu

Mark, I was thinking it over several times, too. But generally, I am slowly and unforcedly working my way back (first from modal/free to bop, and now to swing and earlier things), and I like almost anything I have yet encountered. And if I don't like it now, there might still come a time I will... Anyway, I think I do have some sort of idea of what I will going to hear. ubu

HELL, WHY DO RECORD SHOPS EVERYWHERE REPLACE ALL THE OLD FINE OJCCDS WITH THEM CRAPPY ZYX-VERSIONS?????? I really don't get it! Seems like NOONE working in all these stores EVER LISTENS TO ANY JAZZ ALBUM!! (sorry for going off-topic, but that remark of couw's did indeed provoke some sort of rant ) By the way, more good Timmons is to be found on the great Kenny Dorham's Bohemia set! One of my favorite RVGs! ubu

There's a beautiful Koller solo rendition of "Lush Life" (on tenor, of course), on the following album: hatOLOGY 520 Bernd Konrad Hans Koller Unit with Didier Lockwood Phonolith I got this disc yesterday, and think it's a rather interesting one, but need to listen to it some more times. That one track by Koller solo is very beautiful, though! By the way, Mike, some of the material from "Phonolith" (Body & Soul among it) has been recorded in 1994! The other tracks from that date include a duo by Konrad & Koller, and a larger ensemble (recording the title tune), featuring among others Herbert Joos, Kenny Wheeler, Pierre Favre. Here you can see all the details: ubu
