  1. If you consider some pretty outspoken lyrics on records of R&B artists, Wynonie Harris in particular, these censors must have been either stone dumb or laughing their asses off! On the Dinah Washington VEE there's some pretty funny stuff, too! That tune about changing the channels on TV... ubu
  2. Mike, I heard a list once of Ellington and Strayhorn titles in the more "concrete" category implied by my "fantasies" (as you call that...), pretty funny, actually - and that noone was offended on the side of record labels and radio stations etc is pretty funny, too - they didn't really take notice of it, it seems... ubu
  3. No one has any of these? Or should I post this in the discography section? ubu
  4. The list looks good indeed, but, hey: Kirk In Copenhagen WITHOUTH BONUS CUTS!?!?!? No way, man! ubu
  5. I suggest that you order from Abeille Musique website, which is the French distributor for the whole SteepleChase catalogue. The Ted Brown CD is listed at 19.38 € Direct link to the Ted Brown CD or the complete SteepleChase catalogue listing Thanks, Vincent, but they're pretty expensive, too! Will have a look at the site, however. ubu
  6. Thanks for your elaborat post, Mike! I can wait a little, of course (that's the completist's fate, anyway...) The Mexican one sounds interesting to my ears! I know very very little about mexican music (I think some of the stuff Charlie Haden did on "Nocturne" was mexican, yes? Or, well, at least americanized mexican music played by jazz pros...). "El sonido nuevo" sounds good, too, and as far as the Soul ones are concerned, I will follow your advice. However, the one with some descargas sounds fine to my ears! (That jam feel was what I loved that much about the late Don Ruben Gonzalez' second LP for World Circuit). ubu
  7. Potential completist I am (HELL!! I'd love to be different, but... ) Mike, so I guess that was one of those Snapper releases? I got such a one from Mel Tormé, and it provides a pretty fine overview (I will NOT get all his Concords in full, as I suppose some of that stuff is rather boring and stiff, so in that case, the comp is the right thing for me. Only later I found "Too Darn Hot" with two full albums for 10 CHF, some 6.5 euros, which was quite a good find!) How about the Verves? You know them? I guess some of them are to be bought rather quick, as they're only available in the US, and come from the days when Verve did their reissues the right way... ubu

    Zoot Sims

Yep, a good one! Got to listen to that one again, soon! I managed to get a copy of the Avenue Jazz/Rhino reissue from cduniverse some time ago, but it seems the only way to get Bethlehems these days is Japan. ubu
  9. Thanks, tjobbe! Pretty proud prizes though they have! I think buying from the US might be cheaper! ubu

    Funny Rat

Listened to "So What" yesterday, and intended to follow it with the duo CD, but I was sooo fucking tired... "So What" is rather difficult, I think, to get into. Very fragmented, generally too much Maneri too much in front of everything else - this was my first impression. The fragmentation makes it hard to follow, but also rather exciting at moments. I liked some of the Miles covers (Solar the best, actually), but I think I liked them better because at least some short pieces of melodies I like and know for many years are discernable there, while I of course never heard any of the originals by Maneri. The electric violin is an instrument I usually HATE (one of the worst examples of electric violin can be found on "Exodus" by the New Power Generation, which otherwise is a GREAT disc full of grooving old school funk), I think Maneri creates interesting sounds, also covering the range usually assigned to the cello makes things interesting. Yet at moments where he is in that low range, I often thought he still was too far in the foreground, and Shipp was generally less heard than I had liked to. However, this disc (as well as Joe M's "Tenderly") is one I will listen to again. I hope to find the time to listen to "Dissonant Characters", soon, too. ubu
  11. Found it: http://www.trytel.com/~skok/komeda.html ubu
  12. I don't have it, and I'm afraid I won't be able to get it right now... The Komeda series looks very cool, though - there's a us or canadian site selling them, but I can't find the link. Will look for it later. ubu
  13. Perhaps the Concords are aesier to get for you. There was a 2 CD compilation from them (available at Zweitausendeins as well), but they are all nice, and the band was very together, with Mark Levine (a geat pianist/arranger for Latin style), Poncho Sanchez, and Roger Glenn or Gary Foster. I'll post my Tjader Fantasy recommendations later, it's hard for me to pick one - I have 'em and love 'em all ... Mike I missed your post in reply to my question. Is this (AMG) the Concord 2CD in question? (Concord is not distributed here, it happens very seldom I see a Concord disc in a shop here!) How about the Verve/Polygram CDs? Several Shades of Jade/Breeze from the East (AMG) Cal Tjader Plays the Contemporary Music of Mexico and Brasil (AMG) Soul Sauce (AMG) Soul Burst (AMG) El Sonido Nuevo: The New Soul Sound (AMG) Soul Bird Whiffenpoof (AMG) How are they? Look like a nice bunch, too! ubu
  14. Randy, one other thing while you're at it- the Johnny Griffin tune is actually called "Soft" and Furry. B) Now what sort of allusion is this supposed to be? Something close to "Warm Valley", I suppose? ubu edited for crappy spelling

    Julius Hemphill

I got 'Coon Bid'Ness rather recently too! What a beautiful album! Later I also got "Flat Out Jump Suite", and that's one of the best recordings I picked up during the last months! How about his connection to Tim Berne - or rather: Berne's relation to Hemphill? I got into their music about the same time. ubu
  16. This one, it seems: http://www.amazon.fr/exec/obidos/ASIN/B000...4350397-4565025 ubu
  17. Sounds good, John! Can you give the label of this one? Same tour as that Blakey one in the Jazz in Paris series? That one was recorded at the Olympia, I think. ubu
  18. Welcome! Hope I didn't mix anything up, but if I did Mike will step in, for sure! ubu
  19. I started with 5. something... sober Brought it down to .245, but hell, I always was rather slow... ubu
  20. As far as box-sets are concerned, it gets a little bit confusing... Let me begin from the start: - ZYX has their OWN (dreaded) 20-bit remastering series, packed in Digipacks. - ZYX also has (older) Fantasy remasterings of the same titles available (but these are not distributed everywhere, as people seem to think 20-bits are better) - ZYX has lots of Fantasy CDs not included in their 20-bit series, with US-remasterings. - ZYX did those box sets (some of them were on zweitausendeins.de for very cheap prizes last spring) with NO LP-SIZED BOX and NO nice & big BOOKLET, but just a flimsy cardboard box wrapped around the CDs, and a scaled-down booklet, that sometimes does not list musicians (the Sonny Rollins Prestige set), or does not have any liner notes (the Bill Evans Fantasy), and such niceties. - obviously, Amazon Germany carries the ZYX boxes (they're far too expansive for what they are!), as well as the "original" Fantasy boxes (full size, booklet etc) - one more thing about box-sets: those box sets (Monk Prestige, Rollins Freelance etc) that also in their Fantasy incarnations are small-sized ones, they seem to be identical to the Fantasy boxes. ubu
  21. Randy, thank you very much for the two CDs! I guess I was a little harsh here and there in my assessments, but I enjoyed listening! And I will listen again, and feel ashamed at what I dissed, and at what I failed to recognize (the Andrew Hill, the Randy Weston...) or was too lazy to find out what tune exactly (as the Woody Shaw). However, you did a great job, and your discs include music by several artists I will have to check out! Thanks! ubu
  22. Thanks, Mike! I guess their prices are alright. And they do seem to ship internationally. No idea if they would deduct taxes, but with the current Euro/CHF exchange rate, I'll rather buy from the US currently (and I bought so many CDs lately... I really should cut down!). ubu
  23. I see that Amazon UK has several Spotlite CD reissuing Dial sessions. I do own the Spotlite Complete Dial set by Bird, which is in very fine sound, and good documentation (I still had to get the Savoy 8CD set, as I only had the Savoy stuff on LP and never had the famous Gillespie sides etc). Then I also have a nice Dexter Gordon disc. Both of these are also still available from Amazon UK. Some questions regarding these: Red Norvo - On Dial What does this include? The Comet session with Bird also in the Savoy 8CD set? And what more? Dodo Marmarosa - Dial Masters Again, what does this include? I know some Marmarosa trio tracks (alternates, I guess) with Babasin, and they're fine. This is the one which interests me the most: Gillespie, Navarro, Berman - Complete Dial Sessions 1946-1948 What's the contents of this one? Erroll Garner - On Dial This has the Parker date with Garner, but I guess there must be some more on this CD? any help appreciated! ubu
  24. This all looks like there is no distributor for the Fantasy label group in Switzerland, or is there a Swiss ZYX dependency? These prices tell me that they are treated like imports. Who in all the world handles the imports? France, Italy, GB all have their individual distributor for Fantasy labels like ZYX here in Germany. I think we just get what ZYX produces, and not much more. That they don't have large parts of the catalogue on display is nothing that remarkable. It takes two months until RVGs show up, and Conns don't always show up at all... They have no idea of what's around, they don't seem to care much... ubu
