I started with 5. something... sober Brought it down to .245, but hell, I always was rather slow... ubu

As far as box-sets are concerned, it gets a little bit confusing... Let me begin from the start: - ZYX has their OWN (dreaded) 20-bit remastering series, packed in Digipacks. - ZYX also has (older) Fantasy remasterings of the same titles available (but these are not distributed everywhere, as people seem to think 20-bits are better) - ZYX has lots of Fantasy CDs not included in their 20-bit series, with US-remasterings. - ZYX did those box sets (some of them were on zweitausendeins.de for very cheap prizes last spring) with NO LP-SIZED BOX and NO nice & big BOOKLET, but just a flimsy cardboard box wrapped around the CDs, and a scaled-down booklet, that sometimes does not list musicians (the Sonny Rollins Prestige set), or does not have any liner notes (the Bill Evans Fantasy), and such niceties. - obviously, Amazon Germany carries the ZYX boxes (they're far too expansive for what they are!), as well as the "original" Fantasy boxes (full size, booklet etc) - one more thing about box-sets: those box sets (Monk Prestige, Rollins Freelance etc) that also in their Fantasy incarnations are small-sized ones, they seem to be identical to the Fantasy boxes. ubu

Randy, thank you very much for the two CDs! I guess I was a little harsh here and there in my assessments, but I enjoyed listening! And I will listen again, and feel ashamed at what I dissed, and at what I failed to recognize (the Andrew Hill, the Randy Weston...) or was too lazy to find out what tune exactly (as the Woody Shaw). However, you did a great job, and your discs include music by several artists I will have to check out! Thanks! ubu

Thanks, Mike! I guess their prices are alright. And they do seem to ship internationally. No idea if they would deduct taxes, but with the current Euro/CHF exchange rate, I'll rather buy from the US currently (and I bought so many CDs lately... I really should cut down!). ubu

I see that Amazon UK has several Spotlite CD reissuing Dial sessions. I do own the Spotlite Complete Dial set by Bird, which is in very fine sound, and good documentation (I still had to get the Savoy 8CD set, as I only had the Savoy stuff on LP and never had the famous Gillespie sides etc). Then I also have a nice Dexter Gordon disc. Both of these are also still available from Amazon UK. Some questions regarding these: Red Norvo - On Dial What does this include? The Comet session with Bird also in the Savoy 8CD set? And what more? Dodo Marmarosa - Dial Masters Again, what does this include? I know some Marmarosa trio tracks (alternates, I guess) with Babasin, and they're fine. This is the one which interests me the most: Gillespie, Navarro, Berman - Complete Dial Sessions 1946-1948 What's the contents of this one? Erroll Garner - On Dial This has the Parker date with Garner, but I guess there must be some more on this CD? any help appreciated! ubu

This all looks like there is no distributor for the Fantasy label group in Switzerland, or is there a Swiss ZYX dependency? These prices tell me that they are treated like imports. Who in all the world handles the imports? France, Italy, GB all have their individual distributor for Fantasy labels like ZYX here in Germany. I think we just get what ZYX produces, and not much more. That they don't have large parts of the catalogue on display is nothing that remarkable. It takes two months until RVGs show up, and Conns don't always show up at all... They have no idea of what's around, they don't seem to care much... ubu

Another cool disc! ubu -
After reading everybody's comments on Morris, I guess the Shipp/Morris "Thesis" is one I can live without, or anyone can recommend that? ubu

I picked up some more hats (and I'm ruined now...): Mat Maneri, So What Koglmann, the Duke Ellington tribute with Lee Konitz Maneri /Shipp duo, after reading D.D.'s assessment Shipp's Strata (OOP I think, as is the Maneri/Shipp, no?) I will report on Koglmann and Maneris. They clearly don't seem to be everybody's cup of tea. However, I like that Papa Jo disc ("Tenderly") rather well after initial listening, and I would certainly like to get the OOP one Hans posted above, as well as Mat's OOP "Acceptance" - working towards my own private hat Mosaic... ubu

It's only those 20-bit or what the hell they call it that sound dreadful. The other ZYX pressings use the US mastering and sound fine. I know, but generally, they don't have those others! They have lots of the dreaded 20-bit discs, and if they have some others (I picked up the Clifford Jordan "Mosaic", for instance), they want lots of money for them (more than 20 euros!). ubu

Another one for no limits, as for the reason why, see comments the others made above. ubu

Cool, Lon! Never saw that one! Thanks for sharing it! ubu

One that has not been mentioned often here: I just had another listen to it today: Joe Chambers, Mirrors. A tremendous album by a great composer and master percussionist! ubu -
I listened to the Ellington tribute yesterday - a very good disc! Thanks, jazz1, for recommending it to me! ubu

deus, here's the link to the homepage of the Fotomuseum Winterthur: http://www.fotomuseum.ch/ (guess you know it, but...) Will check for that book! ubu

Of course you know there IS a Bley/Peacock duo album around recently reissued by Universal France (?): Sorry for going off-topice, but if you Bley/Peacock fans were not aware of this one, GET IT! Nothing to add about Koglmann, as I have not yet checked him out. ubu

Late, I stumbled upon that site last week, did not really check it out yet. Thanks for mentioning it! I have not yet checked out Koglmann either, but he's on my radar. David, if you ordered from cds-24.de - I ordered something from them via Amazon France and I just got a money refund Hope it doesn't end this way with you! By the way, the Chapin box is on its way to me! (from Amazon Germany) ubu

I will consider the Tjader albums. The LPRs can be found rather cheap. Listened to the Gary Burton & Keith Jarrett/Gary Burton-Throb twofer this morning. He sounds too clean for me to really like him, I guess. The country-styled things on Throb, the violin etc, have a haunting quality (parallels to what Charlie Haden is doing these days?). Then I just found my copy of Terry Gibbs' LPR, that "Plays Jewish Melodies in Jazztime" - it's been some time since I listened to it, but I remember I liked it quite a bit. Gotta listen to this and to the Dickerson VME (which I absolutely love, but which is my only Dickerson so far). ubu

Yep, I am. I've been wanting to see that museum for quite some time now ... haven't gotten around to it yet - but I will, one day. One of my fave photographers is Franz Roh (1890-1965), but it is very difficult to find any of his stuf online in a quality which is worthhy of his absolutely stunning photos. So, I won't link to anything here. But there are so many great photographers. I could put a hundred into this thread off the top of my head. But, not enough time, especially now (I'm supposed to be in bed). Maybe another day. Cheers! deus, newly opened, just opposite the Fotomuseum, there's the Fotostiftung Schweiz - so you get twice as much to see if you make it! I just got the programme for 2004: Lukas Felzmann (never heard of him), Jean-Pascal Imsand (ditto), and Jakob Tuggener (great swiss photographer, 1904-1988) coming up. Did you see the film "Henri Cartier-Bresson: Biographie eines Blicks"? Great one! You see the grand old man, talking about his life and looking at his photographs, making his sly remarks, trying to stylize himself as much as he can, but a great film, nevertheless! Do you know the swiss magazine called "du"? They had numbers featuring the works of Bischof, Frank, Freud, Salgado and others. Worth looking for! Never heard of Franz Roh. Is there anything especially good around? Some book I could fine in a good library? ubu

Ain't she beautiful? Halsmann.

This book then is most highly recommended! One of my favorite photographers, I saw the corresponding exhibition in London a couple of years ago. I am a fan of his portraits! ubu
