Thanks, brownie! Browsing around there now. They don't really list details ("soon", they say), and the prize comparison doesn't work either. But Amazon UK has them for 7 or 8 £ and that's alright anyway. This one looks rather interesting, too: Really interesting, I think! ubu

And Edwards/McGhee always arouse my interest, so the additional material (not on your LP) might be worth getting it, too. Could this be the McGhee Dial date? I have that on one of those dreaded Definitive CDs I picked up for nothing some time ago, but don't have it at hand. I am not sure Marmarosa is on piano there, but could well be. ubu

The Marmarosa LP has the complete session with Babasin on cello (!) and Jackie Mills on drums of December 3, 1947, 11 takes in all, two test takes of "Tone Painting" and two AFRS Jubilee performances. That session with the cello is pretty interesting! (And it might be one of the earliest using cello in place of bass, I suppose). Will have to get it... ubu

I have almost all of the Dial LPs - the Norvo LP has Hallelujah 3 takes get happy 2 takes Slam Slam Blues 2 takes Congo Blues 5 takes No idea wether the CD has more. So this is all the material with Diz & Bird! There has to be something else on the CD, no? Otherwise I (and my bank account) could gladly NOT get this as well... ubu

The Gillespie LP has the session of February 6, 1946 that Parker missed, with Lucky Thompson, Milt jackson, Ray Brown, Al Haig and Stan Levey (8 takes), and 8 takes from the Harmanites session of September 21, 1946 with Bill Harris, Serge Chaloff, Sonny Berman, and Ralph Burns. Another cool one, it seems! ubu
-
The Garner LP does NOT include the tracks with Parker but the trio tracks recorded at the same session (3 takes), and 10 piano solos recorded for Dial on June 10, 1947, all very nice. So the CD will include what you listed plus the Parker takes, most probably. Thanks! One to get! ubu

Thanks! No hurry! I was just wondering if my thread got lost. ubu

If you consider some pretty outspoken lyrics on records of R&B artists, Wynonie Harris in particular, these censors must have been either stone dumb or laughing their asses off! On the Dinah Washington VEE there's some pretty funny stuff, too! That tune about changing the channels on TV... ubu

Mike, I heard a list once of Ellington and Strayhorn titles in the more "concrete" category implied by my "fantasies" (as you call that...), pretty funny, actually - and that noone was offended on the side of record labels and radio stations etc is pretty funny, too - they didn't really take notice of it, it seems... ubu

No one has any of these? Or should I post this in the discography section? ubu

The list looks good indeed, but, hey: Kirk In Copenhagen WITHOUTH BONUS CUTS!?!?!? No way, man! ubu

I suggest that you order from Abeille Musique website, which is the French distributor for the whole SteepleChase catalogue. The Ted Brown CD is listed at 19.38 € Direct link to the Ted Brown CD or the complete SteepleChase catalogue listing Thanks, Vincent, but they're pretty expensive, too! Will have a look at the site, however. ubu

Thanks for your elaborat post, Mike! I can wait a little, of course (that's the completist's fate, anyway...) The Mexican one sounds interesting to my ears! I know very very little about mexican music (I think some of the stuff Charlie Haden did on "Nocturne" was mexican, yes? Or, well, at least americanized mexican music played by jazz pros...). "El sonido nuevo" sounds good, too, and as far as the Soul ones are concerned, I will follow your advice. However, the one with some descargas sounds fine to my ears! (That jam feel was what I loved that much about the late Don Ruben Gonzalez' second LP for World Circuit). ubu

Potential completist I am (HELL!! I'd love to be different, but... ) Mike, so I guess that was one of those Snapper releases? I got such a one from Mel Tormé, and it provides a pretty fine overview (I will NOT get all his Concords in full, as I suppose some of that stuff is rather boring and stiff, so in that case, the comp is the right thing for me. Only later I found "Too Darn Hot" with two full albums for 10 CHF, some 6.5 euros, which was quite a good find!) How about the Verves? You know them? I guess some of them are to be bought rather quick, as they're only available in the US, and come from the days when Verve did their reissues the right way... ubu
-
Yep, a good one! Got to listen to that one again, soon! I managed to get a copy of the Avenue Jazz/Rhino reissue from cduniverse some time ago, but it seems the only way to get Bethlehems these days is Japan. ubu

Thanks, tjobbe! Pretty proud prizes though they have! I think buying from the US might be cheaper! ubu

Listened to "So What" yesterday, and intended to follow it with the duo CD, but I was sooo fucking tired... "So What" is rather difficult, I think, to get into. Very fragmented, generally too much Maneri too much in front of everything else - this was my first impression. The fragmentation makes it hard to follow, but also rather exciting at moments. I liked some of the Miles covers (Solar the best, actually), but I think I liked them better because at least some short pieces of melodies I like and know for many years are discernable there, while I of course never heard any of the originals by Maneri. The electric violin is an instrument I usually HATE (one of the worst examples of electric violin can be found on "Exodus" by the New Power Generation, which otherwise is a GREAT disc full of grooving old school funk), I think Maneri creates interesting sounds, also covering the range usually assigned to the cello makes things interesting. Yet at moments where he is in that low range, I often thought he still was too far in the foreground, and Shipp was generally less heard than I had liked to. However, this disc (as well as Joe M's "Tenderly") is one I will listen to again. I hope to find the time to listen to "Dissonant Characters", soon, too. ubu

I don't have it, and I'm afraid I won't be able to get it right now... The Komeda series looks very cool, though - there's a us or canadian site selling them, but I can't find the link. Will look for it later. ubu -
Perhaps the Concords are aesier to get for you. There was a 2 CD compilation from them (available at Zweitausendeins as well), but they are all nice, and the band was very together, with Mark Levine (a geat pianist/arranger for Latin style), Poncho Sanchez, and Roger Glenn or Gary Foster. I'll post my Tjader Fantasy recommendations later, it's hard for me to pick one - I have 'em and love 'em all ... Mike I missed your post in reply to my question. Is this (AMG) the Concord 2CD in question? (Concord is not distributed here, it happens very seldom I see a Concord disc in a shop here!) How about the Verve/Polygram CDs? Several Shades of Jade/Breeze from the East (AMG) Cal Tjader Plays the Contemporary Music of Mexico and Brasil (AMG) Soul Sauce (AMG) Soul Burst (AMG) El Sonido Nuevo: The New Soul Sound (AMG) Soul Bird Whiffenpoof (AMG) How are they? Look like a nice bunch, too! ubu

Randy, one other thing while you're at it- the Johnny Griffin tune is actually called "Soft" and Furry. B) Now what sort of allusion is this supposed to be? Something close to "Warm Valley", I suppose? ubu edited for crappy spelling

I got 'Coon Bid'Ness rather recently too! What a beautiful album! Later I also got "Flat Out Jump Suite", and that's one of the best recordings I picked up during the last months! How about his connection to Tim Berne - or rather: Berne's relation to Hemphill? I got into their music about the same time. ubu

This one, it seems: http://www.amazon.fr/exec/obidos/ASIN/B000...4350397-4565025 ubu

Sounds good, John! Can you give the label of this one? Same tour as that Blakey one in the Jazz in Paris series? That one was recorded at the Olympia, I think. ubu

Welcome! Hope I didn't mix anything up, but if I did Mike will step in, for sure! ubu
