Tony, I fully agree! Regarding Lyons: I got Eddie Gale's "Black Rhythm Happening" used two days ago. Lyons guesting on that one! Hard to describe the music. I'd say if you like Hills disc with voices, and maybe that Shepp thing "Attica Big Band in Concert" (2CD set on some French label), you would like it. Anyhow, I guess many people could hate Gale. Lyons has some fine spots, however. Did he often do such sideman gigs (besides Taylor, that is)? And is this Eddie Gale the same man as Eddie Gale Stevens Jr. on Cecil's "Unit Structures"? I guess so, as on "Black Rhythm Happening" the person playing guitar and leading the voices is one Joann Gale Stevens. Also got Leo Smith's "Tao Njia", although I am not at all sure I like it. It was so cheap I had to take it home to explore it thoroughly (will report). Has anyone some comments to make on the upcoming Kabell box by Smith? I do not know him very well, actually, I hardly know him at all, but that box looks interesting! ubu

Matthew, glad you like the VAO disc! I think it's awesome! If you like Lauren Newton, check out her "Filigree" on hatOLOGY. It's OOP, but it seems to be around, and quite easy to find, as of today. I saw her live in a duo setting with Joelle Léandre, and did not really like the concert (too much comedy, too much nonsense, too fragmented to make sense, too much eclectisism (sp?) for my likings), but the CD is very fine! ubu

Lon, if you talk of the album "Funny Rat" - I never heard it either, that's not a necessity. And if you talk of the thread as such: no need to have an opinion on it. It's just some sort of free jazz corner, growing fast and wild, at a pace which even I who often did post there find hard to follow. However EVERYBODY's totally welcome to jump in, and there's no need for you to read through it all before, absolutely not. I know there's some people with interests as broad as yours (and mine, too), ranging from early jazz to free to fusion (to just talk of jazz music), and the Funny Rat corner is the one where a few of these meet to discuss the free part of the music, verging also on improvised music. And I would be very interested to read what you think about the Lyons box, so... as I said, Funny Rat is NOT an EXCLUSIVE affair (as such it would and should not have a place on this board, I think!), and you're kindly invited to jump in at any time!

Jim, this IS the one on In+Out. At least here it is. The other I have no idea what label it's on, found the image via google search. Also I haven't heard it. "Art of Three" is easily one of my favorite mainstream trio records of the last years! ubu

The Savoy live discs are pretty essential! The Birdland material can still be found. There's two 2CD sets on Ember. Amazon lists them for 20$ each. (I got the 4CD version some months ago, OOP now). ubu

Found the French BN version of "Black Rhythm Happening" yesterday, used, for a good price. Still got to give it a real listen, but I liked what I heard so far! Now wait a minute! First, you cannot forget that Malle's film is from 1957 - pre nouvelle vague, actually - while Godard's from 1959 or even 1960. Second: nothing compares to "A bout de souffle". Third: "Ascenseur pour l'echafaud" is sort of a french late-noir. The film is beautifully crafted, very very stylish, images/frames lovingly assembled - which is definitively not the case with "A bout de souffle", a film paced much faster, generally more on the lighter side (not in the end, but till you get there), fast and "breathless", indeed. End of rant -_- Regarding the soundtrack: I got the old Fontana CD, never updated so far. I really like the alternates, and the possibility to compare the echo-less originals with the actual soundtrack. On the alternates, there are a couple of precious early Barney solo spots, while on the soundtrack he is rarely heard in solo. ubu
