  4. http://www.organissimo.org/forum/index.php?showtopic=7584 just to link things neatly - some cool photos there, thanks to Jim (Sngry) and EKE BBB! ubu
  5. Wow, thanks for those photos! There's some I didn't know among them. (First I thought wtf Dubya had to do with the Misc non-political forum...) Jim, are you aware of the Pres topic in the artists section? http://www.organissimo.org/forum/index.php?showtopic=6740 Love the Pres! For me everyday has been Pres day for two weeks now, enjoying his work very very much! ubu

  7. Yes, this Rhino series is gone for at least one and a half or two years, it seems. The latest ones I have are copyrighted in 2000. I managed to get lots of these discs maybe a year ago, searching on various online sources. Some really good music! Petty there won't be more to come! ubu
  8. I will probably pick this up, too, but not right now. Was also wondering about the Condon LP set (mentioned above) - seems to be one to get before it goes OOP, but those LPs are so darn expansive, and I would actually prefer having it on CD... yet the music is the main thing. How does the music compare to the stuff on the Capitol set? Some musicians are on both of them. I am only getting into this "dixieland" thing or whatever you call it, but what I heard so far was quite beautiful music. ubu
  9. I love those quartet dates! "Traneing In", "Soultrane", and also "Settin' the Pace" are probably my favourite early Coltrane albums. Terrific stuff! I agree there's not much to compare "Mating Call" to, but if you compare it with Trane's playing on other more or less contemporary dates ("Whims of Chambers", the quartet date with Drew, Chambers & Philly Joe, the Miles dates), I really think his playing has much more authority on "Mating Call". Of course my being a big Dameron fan may also take a part in that... ubu

    Albert Ayler

Cool! Good to hear, brownie, thanks a lot for sharing! ubu

I'm not too fond of "Constellations", either. I wouldn't give it away, but I prefer the trio's Songline disc by miles! Far more imaginative, in my opinion. ubu
  12. Strange, now no mail error messages anymore! Hope it IS fixed, indeed! ubu
  13. Dan, how was it? Please keep us informed where to get it, or share some impressions! Glad to know no one missing on "Mating Call"! Wonderful album just as it is, and some of Trane's best playing up to that date! ubu
  14. Not fixed! Getting these errors, too! (A minute ago) ubu
  15. Evan, I'm not the best one to recommend Whitfield disc, as I only have one with him, which is this here: I really like it though! And Whitfield sounds beautiful. A big fat old sound he has. ubu

Matthew, if you get a chance to catch them live, do so! They're a very good live act, with show and all, but pretty cool! I only saw them once, so far. ubu

Matthew, I don't know the Ellington disc (they recently made a second), but it got good reviews here. No need to search, I think, as it's in print: VAO on TCB records. I don't know if they're distributed in the US, but Amazon seems to have them. Here is the homepage of the VAO. Look at the discography for some more information. I think all their recent recordings are still in print. I don't know too many of their records, however. ubu
  18. I understand, Lon. No problem! And as far as talking/writing about music goes, I'm tending in the same direction you do, lately. Words never are appropriate. And then there's others who can put things in words so much more eloquent as I... ubu

Thanks for the recs! The Dyani and Davis were the one that really jumped at me when I looked through the site! However, the Dyani is OOP, too! Gotta hunt that one! Can make CDRs of the Shepp if you're interested (not right now, but as soon as I found out how it all works and where to get cheap blanks). ubu

Thanks for that link! Didn't know they had a website (never searched, either). ubu

David, my Shepp is on Blue Marge (1001) - rec. Paris Oct. 24, 1979. My favorite Shepp of post 1966, I think! That Lancaster is lame, you say? I wanted to pick it up some day. I have Lancasters Gazell disc "Worlds", and I'm not sure I really like it. "Black Rhythm Happening" came out on Water as well as on French Blue Note CD. The Water reissue however seems to sound much better (Lon replaced it - see the Gale thread somewhere else on this board). I picked up the French BN for 9 CHF, used, but practically new, it seems. The other Gale Water release "Ghetto Music" seems to be cool, too, but I never heard it. The Ayler is marvellous (besides the last track with vocals and some stray chaotic moments that leave me cold). ubu

Looks cool, I admit! However, mostly because of Priester ( ) and Peacock, I don't know Jay Clayton! Now the only problem is that my buying stop has begun, as I'm happy owner of too many hats and totally broke... ubu

Tony, I fully agree! Regarding Lyons: I got Eddie Gale's "Black Rhythm Happening" used two days ago. Lyons guesting on that one! Hard to describe the music. I'd say if you like Hills disc with voices, and maybe that Shepp thing "Attica Big Band in Concert" (2CD set on some French label), you would like it. Anyhow, I guess many people could hate Gale. Lyons has some fine spots, however. Did he often do such sideman gigs (besides Taylor, that is)? And is this Eddie Gale the same man as Eddie Gale Stevens Jr. on Cecil's "Unit Structures"? I guess so, as on "Black Rhythm Happening" the person playing guitar and leading the voices is one Joann Gale Stevens. Also got Leo Smith's "Tao Njia", although I am not at all sure I like it. It was so cheap I had to take it home to explore it thoroughly (will report). Has anyone some comments to make on the upcoming Kabell box by Smith? I do not know him very well, actually, I hardly know him at all, but that box looks interesting! ubu

Matthew, glad you like the VAO disc! I think it's awesome! If you like Lauren Newton, check out her "Filigree" on hatOLOGY. It's OOP, but it seems to be around, and quite easy to find, as of today. I saw her live in a duo setting with Joelle Léandre, and did not really like the concert (too much comedy, too much nonsense, too fragmented to make sense, too much eclectisism (sp?) for my likings), but the CD is very fine! ubu
