  1. For those who followed the discussion of early Bird stuff, and Jay McShann material featuring Bird: the GRP disc is OOP (and I wanted to order it used, but there was some problem, and now it's not available on that site anymore), but there is a Proper 2CD release which includes all (but one, if my short comparison with AMG was right) of the cuts of the GRP disc, as well as several more slightly later dates. Here is the discography of that set: This looks like a very interesting set! Here's the link to the Proper website. ubu
  2. Drop them an email (via the Feedback function of the website) - they'll probably answer you within 24 hours. By the way, I did already receive the Atlantic New Orleans set (only a week for surface shipping! And while customs opened, they failed to take not it's worth is about twice as much as the maximum allowed to import without fees... lucky me, for a change!). After reading the comments about disc 1 and not starting with disc 1 I obviously had to start with disc 1 - and I do like it! Even very much so! Maybe not the stuff you return to every day, but I really like it. No time yet to listen to discs 2-4, but I'm sure I'll like them a lot! ubu
  3. Gary, as I said, "Free Form" is desert island stuff. "Abstract" seems to be just as good. Ask Bev for more, as I don't have it yet. ubu
  4. Rooster, glad to hear you're doing fine! Welcome again! ubu
  5. Babs Gonzalez! Love those early BN sides (thanks to Lon for selling me his duplicate CD a few months ago ) I'm not so sure about Ella. Not sure I really like her scatting. Roberta Gambarini (word did spread a bit, it seems since my first attempt almost a year ago over at that ******** board). ubu
  6. Bev, I'll keep your recommendations in mind! Thanks! Some of the Enjas really look good. jazz1: thanks again very much for making me buy the two hatARTs! I listened to the Rossini live disc finally last night, and this is really good stuff! I like the way they cross over genres, like the arrangements, the humour, and on top of it, there are some good soloists, too. Very enjoyable CDs! Thanks again! ubu
  7. And just for those who have no idea about who Harriott is: he has often been compared to Ornette, and he indeed found to somewhat similar sounds (though far from Ornette's texan blues roots, I think), at the same time, and virtually untouched by Ornette and the US jazz developping freer stylings at the same time. Very interesting, actually, and a point in favor of the "in the air" thing. Must have really been "in the air" back in those days! ubu
  8. Bev, I know "Free Form" for several years, and it really does grow! Interesting point about the semi-classical sensivities of Smythe! I noted this, too. And coupled with the two great and very individual horns, as well as the rhythm section including touches of the West Indies, too, and then the great drummer... this all makes up for an invigorating music! Will look for "Abstract" as soon as funds allow, thanks! ubu
  9. Now who's being shocking?? What I thought ubu
  10. Neither can I! But I managed an exact 200, too! ubu
  11. Pour me one of this any time you like... or make it a Bombay Sapphire... ubu
  12. We heard too little of him, indeed! The few sessions I have with him at the piano are quite beautiful! R.i.p. ubu
  13. Thanks for your interesting post, Bev. "Free Forms" is definitively desert island stuff for me! A fantastic album. Got to get "Abstract" soon. How do you rate Harriott's indo-jazz fusions? I got that Redial CD combining two albums (with Kenny Wheeler aboard on half of it) - does not really work, in my opinion, yet I somehow have a soft spot for it. I think he made another indo-jazz album (reissued on Koch, if I remember right, and probably OOP now) - how does that compare? ubu
  14. 322.9 on first attempt! God ain't that godly anymore, it seems... ubu

    Funny Rat

I picked up "Drip" recently, used, for almost nothing, and I do like it! Tom Rainey is an astonishing drummer, and Scott Colley is, well, Scott Colley. ubu
  16. Thanks, Lon! Sounds even better! ubu
  17. I had the 20 LP Basie Columbia set by CBS France and sold it, as the many alternates made it a rather unpleasant listening experience. On LP having only three titles on one side gets tiring. If they do a complete CD edition, I'd prefer different CDs for masters and alternates, or a separate master take edition. On the other hand, I sure wouldn't get tired of listening to four different Prez solos over one theme .... Mike, I really like the Columbia set - but: I think the octet sides from 1950/51 are pretty unessential, and I am not so sure I like them, neither that they really make sense, musically (DeFranco and Grey being too far out for the acutal context). Then, there's various sessions where they just took one or two cuts (sure they did include some highlights, I think, but I find that not that cool, as long as there's no complete edition around). They could do good if they would release a series of single discs, too. I don't need a box absolutely. How about doing it like they did the single Louis Armstrong hot fives & hot sevens? They could go on at an easy pace, release two or three CDs a year, and in two or three years we would have all that stuff, nicely packaged and remastered as Legacy usually does things... wouldn't that be nice? (Alright, I dream...) ubu

  23. Wow, thanks for those photos! There's some I didn't know among them. (First I thought wtf Dubya had to do with the Misc non-political forum...) Jim, are you aware of the Pres topic in the artists section? http://www.organissimo.org/forum/index.php?showtopic=6740 Love the Pres! For me everyday has been Pres day for two weeks now, enjoying his work very very much! ubu
  24. true! ubu
  25. Yes, this Rhino series is gone for at least one and a half or two years, it seems. The latest ones I have are copyrighted in 2000. I managed to get lots of these discs maybe a year ago, searching on various online sources. Some really good music! Petty there won't be more to come! ubu
