  1. John, you're simply the best! My keyboard is soaked in coffee... ubu (you know, one day I'll send you a bill for all these keyboards!!)
  2. Thanks, EKE! You know your Django! ubu
  3. Uh, Ayler couldn't even play the saxophone. Yeah, and I hate Tatum, just no technique. Also: why does everybody adore Coltrane? I'd rather go for Kenny G - much more pleasant, you can listen in whatever situation you are - plus, read my signature... ubu
  4. This sounds good! Would be time to get some more Django anyway! What is there to go for? I have the Mosaic and all the Jazz in Paris discs. Is the one RCA/Bluebird disc available included in these sessions from Rome? ubu
  5. Here's a link to the Ibrahim thread: http://www.organissimo.org/forum/index.php...bdullah+ibrahim And the Kippie Moeketsi thread: http://www.organissimo.org/forum/index.php...bdullah+ibrahim ubu
  6. I have all of these - there were four. Beautiful stuff! They were discussed in another thread earlier ago. Probably a search for Abdullah Ibrahim would bring it up. ubu
  7. I picked up Westbrook/Blake last week, had no time to listen. Then I have "Love for Sale" on hold at a store right now. I think I'll get it. I also listened to a solo piano album, improvisations based on poems, but I did not find that one very interesting - it was on the Impetus (?) label, I think, same label as Westbrook/Blake. Also at the same store which helds Love for Sale back for me, this one would be available: Shall I go for it, too? ubu
  8. I forgot to mention: some might know the Kühn/Humair/Jenny-Clark trio from the Helen Merrill/Stan Getz album. A great unit! ubu

    Joachim Kühn

Joachim Kühn, the great german piano player and improvisor has just (yesterday, I think) celebrated his 60th birthday. Here's a german article by Bert Noglik: (source: http://www.jazzzeitung.de/jazz/2004/03/portrait-kuehn.shtml Here's a photo of the man: He might be best known outside of Europe (or Germany) for his 1996 album with Ornette Coleman: (I just picked this up today - so no comments yet) Starting out as a classical musician, he got involved with jazz via his older brother, clarinetist Rolf Kühn, with whom he made his latest recording (which seems to be good, but I don't have it): Together with Daniel Humair and Jean-François Jenny-Clark he formed a great trio. I just picked up their record "Triple Entente", which is highly recommended (Penguin gives it 4 stars, for those who believe in these things): ubu
  10. Thanks, Garth! Wow, a thread "especially" for me and it's not even my birthday yet I recorded some (I think four) radio programmes about ZA-Jazz around x-mas - all stuff taken from records or CDs, mostly unknown to me. I still have to dub them to MD or some other more consumer-friendly device, and figure out who all the guys playing are. I will have a look for this disc, Garth, thanks! Why not we discuss some stuff here, as this is the recommendations section - have you any other south african straight jazz recs? ubu

Does Tomasz Stanko get any love here? I'm listening to a broadcast of his quartet right now, and I love it! Saw him live once (and will again end of this month), also have a couple of discs, and I consider him one of my favourite trumpet players ever. ubu
  12. Marty, I wrote brownie an email about it, he said it was "common knowledge" among Clark fans. I found this entry: (source: http://www.icnet.ne.jp/~acchan/scl.htm) then this one: (source: http://www.leebloom.com/discography.htm and this one: (source: http://www.jazzdisco.org/clark/dis/c/) ubu

  14. Claude, I have had an eye on those France Musique broadcasts, but never yet listened to it yet. SWR2 has some pretty good things, too (and usually more than 60 minutes of actual music, while on DLF you can end up with only 40 minutes if they talk too much...). I also regularly check out NOWJazz (on SWR2) if they have live broadcasts, which is mostly friday nights, 23:00-24:00. Missed a Irene Schweizer/Pierre Favre broadcast last friday, shit! Would have loved to hear it! ubu
  15. My threads on the Mingus and Coltrane broadcasts did create a little bit of stir, so why not try to do this a little bit better organized. I will not list anything being broadcast on swiss radio, as no one seems to be able to receive it. So I'll limit myself to german stations. 16. Weren't the Baker tracks without vocals and overdubbed horns reissued on the "Young Chet" compilation? (Which also had the additional tunes to "Baker & Crew"). That Hall album(s) would really be some I'd like to hear! Thanks everybody for sharing your knowledge! ubu
  17. Hey, what about the GREAT vol. 7 of the series that Cannon took with him when he left Riverside? Want that on CD NOW!! ubu

Thanks for your write up about the NYAQ! Sounds like a concert one should have been there! I have nothing to add to your pigs debate (except that I do occasionally eat them) ubu
  19. No more raves about this one (I did that before) - just let me say: IT'S FUCKIN' GREAT!! Mr. Yanow's review: (http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&u...l=A8kpsa9ygu23h) CDUniverse seems to have the best prize: http://www.cduniverse.com/productinfo.asp?...&cart=180919632 Henderson is killing on track #1, there's one trio track (and indeed the rhythm section is one of the best things about this band), other soloists include Hanna, Adams, Williams, Richardson... And I'm in the same boat as Lon about the later stuff (although I don't know much of it) - the first 3 discs of the Mosaic are great, later some of it is great, some good, some a bit drab. What's the word about their collaborations with Ruth Brown (never heard it) and Joe Williams (I like it alright, but I do think it's a slight disappointment). ubu

    Funny Rat

Looking forward. Milford Graves is one of my favorite percussionists and live he is unbelievable (I saw him 4 years ago with New York Art Quartet). With the NYAQ or with the New New York Art Quartet (as the version with Zorn is called)? They were at Willisau last year or the year before. I only heard some 40 minutes over the radio, and it was pretty poor. Old-fashioned chaotic energy free jazz... (the statement I made a couple of pages earlier in this thread applies...) ubu

Yes, I think they are all great. Well worth the price of the box. Thanks. Maybe I'll order the two boxes next month! ubu
