    Funny Rat

Not yet, but I seriously consider not buying anything new at least until summer (july or august, that would be), if not till the end of the year (with exception of stuff going OOP or real good sales), so I might soon get to it. What I heard so far is very impressive! ubu

This here is very good, too! One of my favourite Taylor albums, and one that has space, and air to breathe (which is something that often lacks in Taylor's music - his recordings being so dense, I don't always stand them): ubu

Amazon France still lists the Codanza box: http://www.amazon.fr/exec/obidos/ASIN/B000...1239694-9903315 I bought it from them last year (april, or may), and they then took it off the site - when I ordered, they said "only two left", after my order, it was gone, seems to be back again. ubu

Shepp doesn't sound "right", yes. Also, Dennis Charles can be too stiff, in my opinion. Taylor's music really took off the first time when Sunny Murray (and then Andrew Cyrille) took over the drum chair. The three tracks on Gil Evans' "Into The Hot" (reissued on CD Taylor/Roswell Rudd, "Mixed") are pretty essential, in my opinion! The Montmartre stuff is some of the best music I ever heard! There is a 2CD reissue (lousy packaging, but probably best possible sound) on Revenant. It's OOP, but maybe you can find it. Essential stuff! D.D., I'm into my buying stop now. Anyone feel free to send me "Funny Rat"... ubu
  5. Basie's "Girl From Ipanema" (which I think could be considered a "pop" tune because of success, rather then origin) is real fun! Then, on the Duke Reprise set, there are several interesting covers - the highlight being a highly satirical take on Dylan's "Blowing in the Wind". There are a few Beatles tunes there, too. ubu
  6. Jim, so maybe you indeed heard it all (or almost all) - yet as you have your box already, what's the difference... Big Wheel: I think the Tristano/New Tristano (disc one + four tracks from discs 2&3) should still be around (coupled on a Rhino disc), also one of the two Konitz Atlantics (In Hi-Fi, I think it was), and the Konitz/Marsh should be available. And if you go to Japan... ubu
  7. I did start my listening with disc 1, but then I have been (still am, in fact) in the swiss army band, and I was wondering what these parade bands sounded like (I hate the rigid sound and totally-soul-less and badly performed music I'm periodically forced to play myself, by the way!) Anyone buying this set because of the New Orleans JAZZ recordings, should probably begin with discs 2 or 3. The Lewis tracks provide most of the highlights for me, but then I have only listened two times to all the music. ubu

    Helen Merrill

And I never knew that H. Merrill and Aaron Sachs were a couple!! ubu

    Helen Merrill

Lon, I love your new avatar, beautiful photo of her! Let me post it here big: (of course I never heard of any Alan Merrill before...) Tell us what you think of the Beatles album! I never could find much interest for them, but maybe when she's singing their songs? ubu
  10. Start with the Rah box (Mercury, 10CDs), then get "The Inflated Tear", then start on all the Atlantics, make sure you get hold of a copy of the 3CD set (32jazz) with two live discs and Kirk's stunning solo album, and after that you'll want to have the rest... the Warner albums do have some very fine playing, too! And one I'm very fond of is "Introducing", rec. 1960, with Ira Sullivan - a beautiful album, indeed! (And he did record his first album four years before, for Bethlehem, another nice one). Then the Prestige album with Jack McDuff is really cool, too! ubu
  11. Yes, Pete, I was wondering, because the club they'll play did print a list of the personnel in the programme they sent out more than a month ago - I bet at least a third of the musicians will be different! ubu
  12. I love the NO set! It has been in the running low list for a pretty long time, and when I mailed them, in december or early january, there were around 300 left, so it should be around for at least a couple of weeks, unless you all ordered one, already (but then again, you needn't bother anymore, anyway...) Jim, you'll like the TKM, and the liners are excellent, indeed! And then I guess you never had ALL the music from that live concert with Konitz, Tristano, Ramey and A.T., do you? Was that all available on some LPs? ubu
  13. Tomorrow I'll go to see the Mingus Big Band, in one of the few cool locations in Zurich, a small club - it's gonna be real loud in there! I never saw them live so far, but I have heard broadcasts of several concerts they played in switzerland since about 1998, and was usually rather impressed by the musicality, the abilities of the single members and soloists, as well as by their way of handling Mingus' music - they're level of "liveliness" or whatever, of intensity, often does get pretty close to Mingus' own music, it seems. Has anyone here seen/heard them recently? I would be interested in hearing some opinions! ubu (btw: they charge 50 CHF, which is currently more than 35US$ - crazy prize, no? How much would it cost to see them play two sets in a club in the US?)
  14. I found the information about the other Mercury box I was asking about. It's called "Mercury 40th Anniversary V.S.O.P. Album". Here's the link: http://microgroove.jp/mercury/VSOP-Album.shtml It seems that much of its contents were later included as bonus tracks on Verve CD reissues, yet this would still be a cool box to have, I guess! ubu
  15. Picked up "MALIcool" two days ago, and listened to it twice. Love it! This is a great album, everything works, and Rudd is in finest fettle, playing somewhat subdued due to the surroundings (he would be too loud for the Malinese musicians, otherwise), but always beautiful, and with a very nice sound! ubu
  16. Just finished listening. I really forgot how much I liked it! A very good album. "Strollin'" is a great opener, Mike's remarks about opening an album make perfect sense. Horace-Scope is another great tune. Also I like those Don Newey compositions! Nica is classic, of course. I really would like to get an RVG of this one, too! Thanks to undergroundagent for making me listening to this again! ubu PS: if anyone has the Downbeat with the Silver cover story handy (it's the latest one that's been available this side of the water) - he makes comments on some of his best known tunes, I'm sure some included on this album are among them. I could type it out some later time, if no one beats me to it.
  17. I started another thread about electric Ornette, did not yet pick up any of the recommended discs, but it might interest you nevertheless, sal: http://www.organissimo.org/forum/index.php...4740&hl=ornette ubu
  18. Stay assured your not alone! Maybe we both need to get our ears fixed? ubu
  19. that snide remark reminds me there's one track on one of the McLean albums included in the Mosaic set where both Tolliver and Lee Morgan play, no? ubu
  20. Thanks, I'll look for it! ubu
  21. I could probably find it out, but I am too lazy to do a search cool beans! thanks, John! ubu (lazy because deprived of beer - if that makes any sense)
  22. You know I do! B) ubu, you ever try this stuff? cool! no, never had that beer! I did try all they had at that small place we were staying. It was more about food, and some good local red wine, for me. The Moretti though was the one I preferred. ubu
  23. Happy birthday, Rooster! catesta, I always drank that Moretti when in Italy last fall. I got some south african beer in my fridge for tonight... And currently having pasta with fresh tomato sauce, onions, garlic... And I really hope you have one of these wet t-shirt contests scheduled for my upcoming b-day! ubu B)
