Listened to it yesterday - makes for good birthday morning listening... but yes, I think I too prefer the one without McPhee. ubu

Check "Yarona" on Enja. A live recording with a good trio - I really love it! (Although in general I do agree with you) ubu
  4. Gotta listen to it again, a smokin' live recording! I wish there was more Brown/Roach live stuff around! ubu
  5. You know, even if we're a worldly (or otherworldly?) king, we like to spread the gospel Glad you enjoy it! And: Ravi go searching, hellyeah! ubu

    Helen Merrill

just wanted to make sure everyone here has seen this great cover of one of her best records. ubu
  8. That's true NE-german beauty, yes? ubu
  9. great thread, really ubu I'm afraid it is a typical OrgBB thread. Or am I not afraid? I am too lazy to care and blame catesta. Yeah, I always sensed it was his fault! ubu
  10. great thread, really ubu
  11. Uh, now, with the possibility to relate to myself (eating stinking cheese, sleeping while talking...), I can understand perfectly well... ubu
  12. Currently lots of short texts by: Robert Walser, Joseph Roth, Walter Benjamin, Siegfried Kracauer, Franz Hessel. Feuilletons and book reviews, mainly, searching for the "flaneur"... Also Alfred Döblin's "Reise in Polen". ubu
  13. Huh?!? Is this what dutch people do and look like? (Don't tell Hans! Or, rather: maybe Hans can explain!) ubu
  14. Milan, did you check the alternates (on disc 7) from the Albert & Gene Ammons date? Some great tenor playing! Also, I really like Helen Humes singing with those Clayton bands. Hardee and Wilson are a joy to hear, as is Humes herself! ubu
  15. That's why we over here get payed around 24th or 25th... (no fear, I have it almost since I can remember ) (and it's very bad awful music, really! I would not spend a penny on that one!) ubu
  16. So this would mean there's some tracks missing from the Mosaic, but the Mosaic also has one track not reissued elsewhere? ubu

I think you answer your own question: there are some good musicians around! Not that I'm all that well acquainted with the swiss jazz scene of today, but I hear interesting things here and there pretty often. By the way, Pearson is an englishman who lives in switzerland (Zurich, I think, but I'm not sure) for pretty long, now. There are other imports, as Nils Wogram, or Billy Cobham (if you're into GOOD classic piano trio playing standards, check his "Art of the Three" with Kenny Barron and Ron Carter, one of the most surprising albums of recent years, in my (and Sngry's - see his thread in the recommendations section) opinion) ubu
  19. Another for the Helen Carr! Also I'm a big fan of Tormé's Bethlehem dates. Like "Lulu" is my favorite, but "Sings Fred Astaire" comes close. Also there are some very good things on the live at the Crescendo albums! The "Porgy & Bess" 2CD set is a good one, too. Then, the Chris Connor dates are all very good, in my opinion. Carmen McRae's album is good, too, but not as interesting, in my opinion, as the Connor dates. The two Hartmans mentioned are alright (but I should listen to them again soon, it's been some time. Then I'm not sure about Faye. Would have to spin it, too. ubu
  20. I also think so, but neither do I have the set. I have those five Candid CDs, too. The music's good, some of it great, all of it worth hearing. Shepp's very first record dates, different groups (p-b-d-trio, quartet with Shepp added, some large band stuff) make things interesting, too. ubu

Lon, thanks a lot indeed! Seems like some Beatles I could really like! ubu
  22. Drop jodigrind a PM - he's up to choose someone. If he chooses you, you choose someone to follow after, etc. ubu
  23. You know, I'm so sad Charlton Heston won't be able to join in here! ubu

    Sinatra-Basie

I don't have "It Might As Well Be Spring", but I had "Live at the Sands" before I got "Sinatra/Basie", and I think I still prefer it! A great one, lots of fun, lots of ambiance. (Although if I had to name one favorite tune, my choice would be between "Please Be Kind" and "I Won't Dance", both from "Sinatra/Basie") ubu
