  1. Thanks, Jim! Sounds like a sad one. About Roach: I saw him twice, in 2000 and 2001, and on the first occasion (a rather lame duo evening with Abdullah Ibrahim, both of them also playing solo), he seemed a bit restricted, but in good humour, being a charming entertainer, too. But then when I saw him the second time, with his Bejing Trio, he was in full command, I thought, playing masterful, and as free as he ever did. How about the Bowie/Shaw recording? Am I the only one who knows it, or is it generally considered to be an awfully bad recording, only I did not yet take note of this? ubu
  2. Simon, I found the use of the hidden camera problematic, too. However, the Lanzmann film - I tend to look at it more as an attempt to document human memory (Gedächtnis) and ways of its functioning than a documentation of the factual desctruction per se - is totally impressive, extremely difficult, also hard to bear. And it certainly has its merits, as part of a growing archive. By stating that the film does show more about human memory than about "facts" and "history", I don't want to deny that these facts have taken place, obviously - some things are indeed made very clear by the film. I intend to read at least one of Levi's books soon, maybe also Imre Kertesz. Do you know Friedrich Dürrenmatt's text "Das Hirn" (the brain), or Peter Weiss' "Meine Ortschaft" (my place), or his "Die Vermittlung" (about the Frankfurter Auschwitzprozess)? ubu
  3. I was wondering about that one, too. I don't have it. Is it a good one? And how's the Max/Dizzy? AMG gives it one (1!) star... ubu
  4. Has anyone read it? Can anyone recommend it? I saw Claude Lanzmann's film "Shoah" (in two sessions, the second of which took place last night), and I'm very very impressed (if that word is allowed, adequate it is not, I think, but I'm cannot express these things in english as I could do in german). Also, I read two excerpts of Hilberg's book, and found his general thesis, his way of concluding things etc pretty sound, and foremost, extremely thought-provoking. ubu
  5. Brad, I was spared from that fate, because soon after I found out about Mosaic, I found some long OOP LP sets in a small store here, and among them was the Brooks (that was when only "True Blue" would have been available, but as I did not know about Brooks, but did know about Mosaic... I could not have gone wrong). ubu
  6. Who is Kant? And, hell, do I study philosophy or not? And: does "jazz" (what is jazz, anyway?) fit into Kant's "ästhetische Erfahrung"? ubu
  7. Was Tina a kangarooh: ?
  8. What does Anna Achmatova have to do with Tina Brooks? (courtesy of google image search): ubu? (who am I?)
  9. I think I should have written: Am I too lazy...? Then: who is Tina Brooks, is she beautiful? Is she this lady: ? And what does she have in common with Madonna? And who is Madonna? Is she a person from the Bible? ubu?
  10. And can some kind soul please write up a short abstract of what was discussed in this thread? I am too lazy to read it all... ubu
  11. What actually IS a stupid question?
  12. Good for you, John! Seriously, you'll be in for some great music! ubu
  13. Now don't you know couw like's Mosaics about as much as he likes Miles? ubu You'd be surprised! Oh, sure, I know John likes surprises (as do I ), and I guess if he does not have to get it the "regular way"... ubu
  14. Now don't you know couw like's Mosaics about as much as he likes Miles? ubu
  15. Here's one more by Bowie (found it while looking for the one I mentioned in my previous post): http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&u...l=Ao1rp28or05ja The title of the Bowie/Shaw album is "Bugle Boy Bop" (Muse 5268). ubu
  16. There's a duo album of Lester Bowie and Charles "Bobo" Shaw. I think it was on Muse, originally. I have it on my listening pile right now. Got it on a cheap (british) Camden 2CD reissue which includes three Bowie Muse albums. I remember it as pretty good. ubu
  17. I'm late to join in here - just heard the McKusick parts on that Bluebird "Arrangers" compilation (thanks to mikeweil ). Really fascinating music. Also, it's great to hear Evans AND Russell on the same disc. Would be one hell of a Mosaic, collecting the RCA Victor Jazz Workshop albums! ubu
  18. Happy birthday! Stick around! ubu
  19. ubu B)
  20. that might be the only one I'd pay this much for! ubu
  21. There's that one Roach intro, pretty early on the respective disc, that's really some of his most impressive playing I have heard! (Don't have the set at hand to check) ubu
  22. John who? ubu
  23. Everybody who knows my tastes knows I'd love to grab this one - were it not for my dreaded buying freeze... I'm sure this is a great one, had it in my hands in stores several times. ubu
  24. Now you see, there starts your barbaric illiteracy! Umm... I don't know what you mean. I'm a grammer. Someone who grams. I take great delight in gramming. There's no greater joy than gramming or being grammed. Ideally, I try to gram at least four times a day. (A frequency NOT recommended for the beginner!) OK! I was at work and in a hurry! I've never grammed in my life! My humiliation is complete. -_-
  25. We (that is, my parents etc) used to have our own apples - hell, how do you say that - worked to "Süssmost". No bubbles, then. The one with bubbles can be alright, but often is quite unnatural, too, I feel. ubu
