  1. Milan Svoboda Also heard a broadcast (same year, same festival as Viklicky), of his "Contraband". Might be another musician worth checking! There are some sound samples on the site, too - the solo track is the most interesting one. "Fuddle" - Svoboda Quartet & Tony Lakatos "Monkey Diet" - Contraband "Intermezzo" - solo piano Also, if you go to the discographie, short excerpts from all tracks can be downloaded. ubu
  2. yes, found an LP (Czech Supraphon) titled "The Folk Inspired Jazz Piano." Very nice (good candidate for a thread) need to spin it again.
  3. Uh, I forgot we got a banking expert among us...
  4. Emil Viklicky - a fine czech piano player. Heard him on the air, in trio with Laco Tropp and Frantisek Uhlir, and added guest Steve Houben on some tracks. He also appears on George Mraz' "Morava" (http://www.fantasyjazz.com/catalog/mraz_g_cat.html scroll down), which seems to be very fine (I don't know it). Another site: http://www.viklicky.com/ ubu
  5. This site seems to sell it - click "Megrendeles" on top. You should find your way through it from there. (However, don't ask me how much it costs - and please tell if you find out!) ubu
  6. I have this one (on Leo Golden Years), and think it's incredible, yet it seems there are better ones around:
  7. There is this one, too:

You won't regret it! And supporting small labels like Intakt is a good thing, too!
  9. (A good introduction, I think, but be aware that half of the music on this one is included on the 10CD Parker Verve box, and on Dizzy's "Afro", recently reissued in Verve's LPR series) Then: One of the wierdest BN albums, I guess, and it might take a few listens to get it, but ubu
  10. Hey, whazzup with you anyway? I though you hated Miles and pianists ubu
  11. Wesbed, compare Jaspar's playing on the sessions on disc 1 to the last "reunion" date made by that line up! Pretty much of a development, there! And if you like to hear more of him, there are two discs available in the Jazz in Paris series, "Modern Jazz Au Club Saint-Germain", a very good one, and "Jeux de Quartes" (on which he plays flute only - coupled with Michel Hausser on vibes this is quite an astonishing sound, to my ears). Also, Jaspar plays on the two Donald Byrd quintet albums available in the same series, "Parisian Thoroughfare" and "Byrd in Paris" - a very fine band, featuring Walter Davis on piano. Here is the board's own Jaspar discussion. ubu
  12. I'm not so good on that birthday thing... however: happy belated birthday, Chuck! Hope you had a great one! And many more to come! ubu
  13. Very sad news! I saw him a month or two ago on tour with the Mingus big band, and he didn't seem ill at all! On the contrary! And he played some great tenor, too! ubu

    Funny Rat

Listened to this one the first time today: Conrad Bauer, Trombone Ulrich Gumpert, Piano Ernst-Ludwig Petrowsky, Alto Saxophone, Clarinet, Flute Günter Sommer, Drums, Percussion Cover Art: Peter Frey Liner Notes: Bert Noglik Recorded 1990, Published 2001 by Intakt Records Intakt CD 069 About the Zentralquartet recording made in 1990 ? it¹s music played in a highly charged period. The old GDR no longer existed, and the unification didn¹t yet. And also, even if the music of the Zentralquartet did not depict a mirror image of sensitivity, these recordings manifest it clearly: breakneck speed and introspection, exhaling and reflection. Produced and recorded in 1990, this CD hardly turned up in East Germany and in any shop anywhere. At that time, everything was thrown into chaos. Having disappeared from the scene, this album was considered an insider¹s secret. In order to make this CD available again, Intakt Records researched and consequently obtained the rights to this recording, which has the significance of a musical manifesto. (http://www.intaktrec.ch/zentralquartett.htm) Very impressed! The music is full of joy, of abandon (sometimes reminded me of south african jazz in that aspect). Anyone here knows it? ubu

    Elvin is dead

Rest in peace. Very sad news, but to be expected after all the stir, some time ago. Will play some of his music tonight. ubu
  16. Great choice! (And glad an album gets chosen I have) I read your post about Farmer's solos in the OH GOD moments discussion, Garth - with Farmer I had a similar experience, when I first heard his two quartet dates from those years, mostly with tunes on "Perception". ubu
  17. About this copy-protected stuff in Europe, I was just talking to someone at Blue Note about how the copy protection, combined with the 50 year rule, could really backfire on them. I was told that in no uncertain terms, the US arm of Blue Note told them they thought it was a bad idea. The European EMI people won't listen. They will be copy-protected in Europe from now on. If you do buy these Blue Notes in the public domain to avoid copy proctection, make sure you E-mail European Blue Note to let them know this. Maybe they will finally check a calendar and go "Duh". Later, Kevin Thanks, Kevin! Pretty depressing they won't change this "policy"! I guess, as I said, I'll rather buy the original product from the US then getting the Andorran or Spanish things - I don't like their product (maybe with the exception of the Freshsound releases not available on any other label). ubu
  18. Now you, my dear Sirs and friends, are completely crazy! (anyone wants to buy my smelly socks, the ones I wore when I took my very first Mosaic package from the mailbox - anticipating the historical importance of this event, they remained un-washed and of course not used since that minute of utmost importance to the history of me, no, Switzerland, no, mankind, dare I say...) ubu
  19. I had a very similar experience about two or three years ago when the Fondation Beyeler in Basle had a Rothko exhibition. His work continues to grow. ubu
  20. You know, actually I STILL like to get the original BN product, I AM a BIG fan of the label - and I guess the Blue Note folks have not been asked anyway if they want their product to be copy-protected in Europe... so I will go the import way, some day. But fact is: I have not bought one single new BN disc since when they were still non copy-protected.
  21. huh? what's the deal? Dou you get them non-cc in Britain? No Ubu they have all been CC lately as in mainland Europe , but my copy of NY-1 doesnt mention CC anywhere . The disc does say MADE IN THE EU on it so I havent picked up an import. Strange! I could swear the two or three discs I could have picked up dirt-cheap had the same Cactus-logo thing in the spine as have the RVGs!
  22. You know, actually IF I COULD get these cheap (they sell Freshsound and Definitive for 25$ here), I might even prefer them over the European CC Cactus-shit RVGs... Does EMI Europe pay me for shipping when I order the US non-CC RVGs? I bet not...
  23. Chiming in late - hope you had a good one! And many happy returns! ubu
