  1. No problem at all, 'cause those who do not know will not get it, and those who know will post Well, I don't know him (I swear!), but hell, don't I have to something for my post count?

This one didn't really grab me - sounded more like some sort of a "concept" record... but quite a..hmmm...underdeveloped and disrupted one. Solos seemed rather abrasive also. I like it better with each new listen, it seems. It might be a bit erratic, a bit gruff, a bit under-rehearsed and under-inspired, yet there's something about it that I start to like better and better.
  3. I believe the Jacquet set also had other labels' logos on at least one of the discs. Right! The stuff on disc four was from RCA and I also remember there being some special logo kind of thing on that disc (as opposed to just the usual "Sony Special Products" or whoever being mentioned).
  4. Good call! Love his octet album (Mode/V.S.O.P.)! ubu

Listened to "Clinkers" today - first listen, one of the hatOLOGIES waiting to get acquainted with my ears... very very good! And beautiful, even in its abstract passages. Then "Trickles", a Lacy-Rudd-Carter-Harris date on Soulnote. Very good, too. More on the playful and funny side, full of allusions to older jazz (not only by Rudd and his sound, but also by Lacy himself). Very groovy stuff, too, though in a rather wierd and somewhat distorted way. Now half-through "Morning Joy" (a sencond first, got that burned from some kind soul recently) - wow! I don't think Potts is a drag at all. I like this pensive way of "constructing" solos (dig Oliver Nelson doing it on one track of his "Blues And The Abstract Truth" right after an awesome and eruptive Dolphy solo - Nelson far out wins!). For my ears, Potts creates a very good counterpoint soundwise, fuller, fruitier, whatever, against the cool and somewhat distanced (yet always fully there) Lacy. Avenel is quite a bassist, too! A week or two ago I listened to "The Window" which is the same group, some months later, minus Potts - very good, too! ubu

    Funny Rat

In my case it didn't go to sleep, I went to Seattle. Sleeping is not healthy anyway, is it? I see it's 3:21 am here and me and D.D. still here Well, that's normal thing for weekend, isn't it? Will be listening to Lacy these days (starting with phenomenal Morning Joy on hatOLOGY). Well, the only problem is I will be up tomorrow at half past 8... that's why I'm off to bed now, even if it's not healthy... Will spin "Morning Joy" tomorrow, too. ubu

  8. Thad Jones! I know he is pretty well known, but: he is known as a composer, bandleader, arranger, whatever, but he was one HELLUVA trumpet player! His Blue Note dates are too early to fit into this thread, but his occasional solo with the Jones-Lewis band is enough to secure him an almost-giant status, in my opinion! Monster chops, and even more taste. ubu
  9. Yeah alright - you know by now that I'm lazy (Was far away from my collection when I posted, but wanted to get the word out, anyway). Jim, that Friedman sounds VERY VERY good! Also more Zoller is always a good thing. ubu
  10. "YOWSAH, YOWSAH, YOWSAH", "MY FEET KEEP DANCING" I wish there was more of this music around! ubu

And everybody who wrote me regarding the Brötzmarksson - mailed today. Hope I didn't forget anybody. Please do post your impressions here, once you have the disc! And drop me your email address, so I can send you my self-made cover. ubu

    Funny Rat

Hey wazzup? Funny rat gone asleep? I guess you have all now read the very very sad news of Steve Lacy's death. Let's all listen to some of his music this weekend. I might spin some of his duos with Waldron, "Five Facings", and probably add the "Straight Horn", too, as well as the terrific disc "Work" (it has been mentioned here, several times). ubu
  13. This is so very very sad. I only started getting to know his music. So glad I went to see his (stellar!) solo concert here in Zurich end of november 2003. Here are two photos taken on that occasion: Rest in Peace. ubu
  14. Interesting! I guess I should check out both of these discs. Fol is a great player, too! ubu
  15. While I don't have either of these - brownie, is this Nico Buninck the same Nico "Bunink" that appears on some of the larger group tracks of Mingus' Candid dates? Didn't know he was european! Don't know anything about him, in fact. ubu
  16. Ted Curson Regarding Cal Massey - I think he's rather some sort of obscure player, odd man. He wrote great music, but I'm not sure he was a great trumpet player. I do like his one album, but then, that seems not enough evidence. Maybe I'm wrong, though - forgive me if so. ubu
  17. Do you mean you don't like this guy here: ? And who said the world does change? And I don't agree on Terry, either. He may have his bag, but then, Benny Bailey (who I don't think is overrated, and who has just been mentioned in the underrated trumpet player thread), has his bag of tricks, too. ubu
  18. indeed, but I prefer it in original colours: But I don't have an OBI, as I have the Conn. ubu

    Jimmy Raney

Thanks to this thread I finally jumped ahead, put the two "Raney visits Paris" into my shopping cart, some unknown higher power filled in the rest of the details, and now I just got the shipping confirmation (and I'm still actually trying to make believe I'm in a buying freeze...) ubu
  20. TALKIN ABOUT FOOD IN A MOSAIC DISCUSSION? THINK YOU GET THROUGH WITH THAT, HUH? HA! FORGET IT! THIS IS SACRILEGE! YOU WILL ALL ROAST IN HELL! ubu
  21. Good call! Though this is the only recording of his (except some sideman things) I have so far (will pick up the Select some fine day...) How about Johnny Coles? Love him! His quartet album (on Epic, originally, I think, reissued on Koch) is one of my favourite trumpet quartet albums. ubu
  22. And another one! I know not everybody likes this album, but for us Williams fans, it has to be great! It's one of my cherished ones. ubu
  23. I just ordered "Monk's Dream" (coupled with "Momentum Space" - r.i.p. Elvin) Sad times.
  24. I've heard about his health problems, but when I saw him playing solo earlier this year, actually just a few months ago, he seemed to be in pretty good shape. This is sad! Really Hope he recovers, and hope he doesn't suffer too much. ubu
