Got Twins (for €7 or so at Amazon.fr). It is indeed a typical red-black Atlantic Masters digipak reissue made in Germany. The sound is actually quite good - much better than Atlantic Master reissue of Free Jazz, for example. The music is phenomenal. The other one I got is this one: Great stuff! Pretty adventurous playing from everybody. Say what you will, but I hear a lot of Brötzmann in Hawkins' playing. As Chuck said. Listening to Brötz on the recently bought "Three points and a mountain...plus" (FMP, trio with Mengelberg & Bennink), that seems to be very much the case - loads of Hawk in there! Listen to Sonny apeing Hawk on some track (can't remember, don't have my RCA box at hand) is great! And it seems on a few tracks that Hawk, in this surroundings, outgrows himself (if that is possible - or let me say: stylistically transcends his own horizon), while Rollins of (mocking on the surface, but probably deep serious) respect plays all the Hawk he knows (which is tons of, of course). ubu

Carlos Ward is one of my favorite alto saxophone players (he also plays some mean flute... and is an excellent composer). He is excellent on two live discs he recorded with Ed Blackwell on Enja, and on duo reocrd with Karl Berger. Check out Ward's playing on some of the discs he made with Abdullah Ibrahim! "South Africa" and "African Marketplace" are two great ones! ubu

As I only have two Paul Bley CDs (this one and a volume of the Bley-Giuffre-Swallow trio), I´m opened to any further recommendations! A further for "Partners" (also on OWL), a good duo set with Gary Peacock. Other than that I don't have much Bley so far. "Sankt Gerold", on ECM, is one of two albums on that label by the trio of Bley, Evan Parker, and Barre Phillips. Here's the cover: I think it's pretty good! Check the "rat" for more, I'm sure it has been discussed there. ubu

So Fresu is that Milesian trumpet man... the only CD of his I have is with the "Treya Quartet", their Fauré project, which I consider very successful. The pianist, Waters being his name, is at home equally in classical music and in jazz, while the rhythm players are jazzers (Tony Overwater and Gilbert Paeffgen). Check it out, EKE, I guess you would like it! ubu

I wonder if this is the same John Oswald who did Plunderphonics and Greyfolded? What instrument does he play on that disc? Oswald plays alto, Plimley piano. Just read the liners - they are both Canadian and seem to be two of the best on that free jazz scene. They were actually billed to play because Taylor seemed unable to make it, but then he did make it indeed, and thus what would have been a concert of Crispell and Taylor, became a three-set concert with them included. Was all recorded on May 22, 2000 at Festival International de Musique Actuelle in Victoriaville, Canada (Quebec, I guess - that whole Victo label seems Frenc (if one can call that strange idiom of the Quebequois French)). Will report on the music once I get to know it a bit. ubu
