There's some mighty fine Flanagan on the Enja dates! "Giant Steps", "Eclipso", "Confimation"... I like them a lot! And "Our Delights" (Fantasy, mentioned already) is one of the nicest piano duos I've heard. ubu

That's the Charly disc - the one I have. Good one, I think!

Title of the article translates: Barney Wilen on the hot seat: 'Sonny Rollins is afraid of nothing!' That was a Blindfold test I did upon a request from Jazz Magazine. It was published in the December 1957 issue. I don't have a copy of it unfortunately. Barney was 20 at the time. I was 18. We both had a great time. And may I pat myself on the back for the excellent selection of records. The choice still looks pretty good nearly half a century later. The records came from my limited collection. It has grown mightily since! The item comes from a Barney Wilen bibliography from the Darmstadt Jazz-Institute: http://home.att.net/~warren.robert/Jazzindex.htm Would love to read it, brownie!

Besides the Lacy, the erikm/fennesz one could be interesting! Either I missed that broadcast, or they are indeed faster releasing it on hat than broadcasting it, for a change! (The Mitterer 2CD hatOLOGY was also broadcast, but as I have it in less than stellar sound, I'll get the release some day, too) ubu

Good news from the Atavistic newsletter! Anyone knows it? My only Schiano is the LP "Rendez-vous" where he sits in with the Rivers-Holland-Altschul trio. They do, among other things, an outlandishly beautiful version of "Lover Man". Other than that only some Schiano on that Instabile Festival disc. ubu

Hey who of you crooks ordered the Rivers/Schlippenbach and the Bernstein with Rivers and was faster than me?

"Improvisation" is actually Mr. P.C.! Sorry, I forgot about that mistake! And yes, Dolphy is mentioned on the cover, but not on any other track. I remember being very disappointed when I got the disc, and there was no Dolphy on the other tracks! (I found that at a big store on Champs Elysées in Paris, if I remeber right, must be eight years ago or something - I guess Amazon's release date may be wrong, too - the disc looks older! Would have to check that though.) ubu

As I said, "On Stage" only has Mr. P.C. with Dolphy, all other tracks are quartet only. I *think* that Mr. P.C is the same one from February 9 (10 - see Wild's page for explanation about the date). I have no idea where the other tracks come from, but as that "On Stage" disc is a real cheap one (label is "Accord", by the way), I guess it's nothing that isn't on other discs from that period. The date should be later than early '62, but I'm not sure about that. If someone who's got all that material wants to compare the versions and find out what that "On Stage" disc does included, I could burn it. I'm too lazy to compare, and I have strong feelings that the tracks are included elsewhere (if not on bootlegs, maybe in the 61-63 Trane tree). The "On Stage" disc is not listed on the Wild page (or I can't seem to find it, at least). ubu

I suspect some of the material you mention may be on On Stage 1962 (Unknown label) with Eric Dolphy Which I listed in my initial post. Please correct me if this is not the case. This CD should be available from amazon.co.uk I think I have the version of "Miles Mode" you mention on a compilation live CD I picked up called "John Coltrane - The Legendary Masters - Unissued or Rare - 1962 - 63" however the recording date is listed as the 9th rather than 10th February 1962. Maybe it's from a gig at Birdland the previous night? The other tunes on it are live recordings from Newport and Europe. "On Stage" only has the ten minute "Mr. P.C." from Feb. 10, the other tracks are from a later quartet date (I haven't found out from when exactly, though). ubu

I see you updated your initial post! Get the GRP disc! The '65 one is fine if you're into Shepp, too. (I am) ubu

That's a great bootleg. It came out on one of the Boris Rose label (Ozone). Similar radio broadcasts by the Coltrane quartet appeared on other Boris Rose labels, Alto and Session. Think they were also issued on obscure CD bootlegs! Have that Ozone LP, as well as a Charly CD with the same contents (the Ozone is only the three tracks with Dolphy). Exciting stuff! Also I fully agree about the greatness of the Paris '65 recordings! Btw: the Newport is from '63 and has Haynes subbing for Elvin, and it's a great recording, Phil! I wouldn't want to miss it! ubu

Philly Joe & Mr. P.C.? Mr. P.C. and Wyn Kelly? Mr. P.C. and Jimmy Cobb? Duke and Hodges? Duke and Strayhorn? Coltrane & Dolphy?

Ubu-man, I had exactly the same feeling about Ware's Flight of I - expertly played clever fake! Glad I'm not all alone with that feeling! Somehow, it starts with the production - all too clean. And then the label: Columbia producing free jazz? Hm... the world would necessarily come to an end very soon, my dear friends, if they were serious about it! I wonder, did Ware (or does he? Is he still with them?) sell enough records for them to keep him? ubu

Gillespie - S. Lacy - Illinois Jacquet
king ubu replied to rockefeller center's topic in Miscellaneous Music
Is BR-alpha different from BR? If so, I don't get it here... missed it anyway, as I only saw it now. Would love to hear that Jacquet! ubu -
Well, droogs, I had a listen to this one: And I have to admit that - while I hear the technical brilliance, and lots of ideas - the whole thing leaves me rather cold. I like Shipp (I don't "love" him, though), and I admire Ms Ibarra, who's a wonderful drummer (and a beautiful woman, too)! Yet this whole thing which I understand is "energetic" and "emotional", still doesn't convince me, and leaves me cold to a point that I could maybe even argue the emotionality being fake... I don't want to say that, but the disc seems to be much too polished, too clean, and not really reaching its goals. Maybe a live recording, done on the spot by someone good at capturing a band's live sound (as opposed to the clean and perfect late nineties studio sound common to many major label releases, lately), would help a lot. Or maybe not... On the other hand, this one's a great disc, I think: Had another listen (only in the background, though), and it does quite convince me. Some beautiful playing by all three, and the two duo tracks with Leo Smith are very good, too! (How about those two tracks, are they part of an album's worth of Smith-Brown duos?) ubu

Albums similar to kenny Burrell's Midnight Blue?

VERY definitely! -
Yes indeed! His JiP releases are great!

How about Gunther Schuller? Haven't heard much of his work, but some of the stuff on that strange Lovano third stream disc is GREAT! And he's the man who did Mingus' "Epitaph", too, so he can't be too bad. Also in the liners of the Miles/Gil box, there's a quote about George Avakian proposing two arrangers to do what would turn out to be "Miles Ahead" - Gil Evans or Gunther Schuller. ubu

Looking forward to it! Hey, I found "Ghostly Thoughts" today - a new copy showing a bit of wear, as it was probably lying around where I found it since its release... only 15 CHF (around 10$), which is pretty cool for a Hat disc, no matter if I like it or love it (let's hope I won't hate it...) ubu

Listened to #10 once more, and I really really like it! It's quite mainstreamy-stuff, if you know it a bit better. Solos are built just as one ought to, but then everything is a bit strange, a bit unusual, some notes are not exactly where they belong to... Love it! Got to look for that disc some day! ubu

Leffe (I currently prefer the Radieuse, but all four of them are good! Or: Then there's this one: And this: A good one I have only come to know recently: (Grimbergen) And a last one: Then there's Guiness, of course, and there's some other good Irish ales... but mainly my love goes to Belgian beer, as you may guess by now... ubu

She did some great work for Randy Weston!
