  1. Hey Chuck, this is a great read! I'm sure you'll succeed doing that Wells thing, too! Take it easy!
  2. I use minidisc for recording from radio, too. It seems that the compression is not as much as it is with MP3s, thus sound quality seems to be better (I read an article in a German newspaper on this topic, recently, and they said minidisc was still the best among "walkies" and portable sound devices - obviously they didn't include CD/CDRs). Editing is extremely easy with MD-players, you can set marks during recording, or after - like an old floppy you can "save" the disc, then you can't delete it accidentally, can't move tracks etc. I have many LPs on MD as well, and if I don't really sit down and listen, I often just put in the MD-copy. I only have a small player (have had three, all Sony, the first two gave up, each after maybe two or three years of heaviest use), but you can of course always connect such a "walkie" with a hifi-set. ubu
  3. Strange. Seems that site doesn't work anymore, or at least not at the moment. Sorry, I didn't check the link before posting it, and it's been quite some time since I did download that concert. Again, sorry! ubu
  4. available for free download here. edit: sorry, that link does not work anymore! ubu
  5. I agree on the Adderley, but then I always thought it was a very strange-sounding disc, no? Can't explain it, and it's been a while since I heard it, but I didn't really like it, soundwise. ubu

Sorry to hear that, Tony! But I really urge you to give this another chance maybe in a few weeks! I liked it a lot, listened to it several times when I got it.
  12. When you only sell a few hundred copies, they don't give you second albums at major labels. Sadly that disc sold very poorly. No one bought it. I ran into a shop and had a listen as soon as it was out, but Mirrors disappointed me - a little lame compared to the fire of any of his previous dates, leader or sideman. The "Poinciana Drum Groove" on one track was not nearly as engaging as Vernel Forunier's recording with Ahmad Jamal. Too polite, for my taste. I know what you mean - however, I think that album was sort of over-produced, the production (and sound) smoothed everything out. How about Bill Stewart? I think his "Telepathy" is very very good! I guess it sold poorly, as well, as he didn't get another chance. ubu

Some Sunday listening: Like it pretty well. Don't know much of Murray's output (and, frankly, don't feel a need to really start explore his oeuvre), but this one's quite good. Johnny Dyani is on bass, and Butch Morris on trumpet (or is it a cornet? or a pocket trumpet? guess a cornet). Then another Marge disc, Roy Burrowes "Live at the Dreher" feat. Mal Waldron. Richard Raux is very good on tenor, drummer George Brown is also the drummer on the Murray disc. Right now: broadcast of Charles Lloyd's quartet, just began on France Musiques. With Geri Allen, Eric Harland, and Reuben Rogers. ubu
  14. That band is first rate! George Gruntz is on piano, Daniel Humair on drums, and Henri Texier on bass. I have only heard it once on radio, but I did like it a lot, and will have to pick it up some day. ubu
  15. Oh, well, happy birthday, of course! Austrian radio station Ö1 will have part of their "Jazznacht" tomorrow dedicated to Basie - from 01:00 a.m. to 02:00 a.m. (Sunday) they'll broadcast a concert from Paris, March 29, 1960. From 2:00 to 3:00: Basie & vocalists (Rushing, Turner, Humers, Fitzgerald, Sinatra, Williams, Vaughan, Bennett, Sherman, LH&R) And from 5:00 to 6:00 "Best of Basie" (strangely, from the Beatles album(s?) and "Battle Royal," - so says the announcement - as if that was "best of Basie"...) Here in Zurich, on Thursday, Sept. 2, there will be a special cinematic celebration with Basie on screen, between 1941 and 1967: Many or all of the Septet tracks can be found on a CD recently released by some french PD label, Sagajazz (they have a website, but it only gives track listings, no discographical information). I'm pretty excited about seing all of these treasures! Billie Holiday!!! That's two of like five tracks surviving with her and Basie. ubu

Sounds interesting, Gary! These Arte Sax Quartet guys are pretty much all over the place, it seems! Don't know much more about them except they're swiss, and good. And on records by several younger swiss jazz musicians (Hans Feigenwinter, Kaspar Ewald), as well as collaborating with people like Terry Riley. ********** Listening now to No Try No Fall by Leimgruber, Léandre, and Hauser. Like it a lot! First time I really listen to it. ubu

John, I have only two Berne discs so far: "Science Friction", and "Open, Coma" (picked that up twice on sale last week, and D.D. just got the other). I like them both, but then I think Ducret is one of the best guitar players around. ubu

They could do special limited editions: "funny rat edition: no aebi overdubs"... ubu
  20. Don't know if they're all originally from Blue Note LPs, but the fine James Spaulding disc "Escapade" (High Note), has the following tunes (and some more): Escapade (K.D.) ("Our THing") Cheesecake (Dexter Gordon) ("Go") Madline (Hank Mobley) Grant's Tune (Grant Green) ("Solid") High Modes (Mobley) The Break Through (Mobley) (this is from the Muse album of the same title) La Mesha (K.D.) ("Page One") Don't have the Mobley stuff around. ubu
  21. Have never seen "A Walk on the Wild Side," but both "Man with the Golden Arm," and "Sweet Smell of Success" are great films, classics. Sad news. ubu
  22. Oh no, not the Hodges! No money here, after the two VeeJays!

I go for something else, the Parker/Guy is no good background music! Spinning the latest by Kenny Barron ("Images", Universal) - picked it up used, and I think it's quite good. It has Ann Drummond on flute, and Stefon Harris on vibes. But then, I have a live recording of his "Canta Brasil" with Drummond, and an acoustic guitar player - I almost like that one better (don't have the "Canta Brasil" studio date, however). (The name of the guitar player is Romero Lubambo, just came to my mind again) ubu
