Can't help on the CBBB thing, but thanks for that link, Sidewinder! I picked up this one by Giorgio Azzolini recently in a sale, and it's great! Perfect bft material... ubu

Atavistic UMS. Have listened to the Jeanne Lee disc, "Natural Affinities", and that one is a rather strange affair. It starts with a moody reading/chanting from Mingus' "Beneath the Underdog", accompanied by Dave Holland. Then things proceed with a composition by Gunter Hampel (playing flute and vibes on that one tune), an excerpt from an opera each by Sharon Freeman and Leo Smith, and several other (strange and a bit less so) things. Smith plays on some cuts, usually the rhythm team is Lisle Atkinson and Newman Baker. Don't know what to think of it. I'll have to listen to it once, without reading any of Lee's comments. Just listen to the music, maybe I can offer any opinion then. ubu

me likey! The whole CD is a rather chaotic affair, a good mix of old-fashioned funk (the bass player doesn't just play "bass", no, he plays "fender bass", of course...), and free jazz, eruptive at moments, grooving at others. J.D. Parran adds some of the best solos, in my opinion, but while there are (long) solos here and there, this is very much group music. Recommended! ubu

Thanks, Gary! -
Thanks, John - will put that on my "list"... ubu

Konstipulation... I heard Ferrell's first disc on BN (at least I think it was her first), and didn't really like it. She tries a bit too hard, in my opinion. Da king's in da house! ubu

the King suffers from Konstipation? Anyone been talkin' about me? Have I heard something?

Hey John, how's this one? Don't forget to post! Looks tasty! ubu

Can anyone tell me when the Jazz on 3 shows are updated? thanks, ubu
-
same here...

Hey, wait a minute, Evan Parker, Wolfgang Muthspiel, and Brian Blade ARE the greats! Ken Vandermark, some would say, as well... Maybe not your typical Blue Note kind of sound, but hey!
-
Funny, same here - Friday night is the weekly broadcast on swiss radio, as well. So the online recording of the Jazz on 3 show is available right until the new one is up? Do they change right after the actual broadcast occurs?
-
Gary, that's of course what I'm recording right now... the Parker sounds good on paper, will post in the rat once I have it. I guess you recorded that straight from the radio? ubu

Thanks, recording now! ubu

Thanks, David! Now can anyone explain to me how I can record this with either Nero Wave Editor or Goldwave? What way do I have to adapt my settings? Or do I need yet another programme? thanks, ubu

Here are a few Rudresh Mahanthappa MP3s (two of them, "Are There Clouds..." and "Hope" however don't work): http://rudreshm.tripod.com/cgi-bin/recordings.html Never heard him before, will listen to these. ubu

I love "Live Evil" and maybe it's my favourite of those live 2CD sets... can't wait for the box to appear! The short tracks don't really belong in there, I think, except for that one 5 or so minute long one with McLaughlin, that's pretty good. The Jack Johnson set has the full date with Hermeto Pascoal attached, I think just before the original album mix. Quite nice stuff, but not really in company of the soaring "Live Evil" material. Have just finished a listen to this one: I think it's a craftsmanlike disc, good tunes, good arrangements, good musicians (Varner, Eskelin, Drew Gress, Tom Rainey, and Ed Jackson on alto - never heard him before). The music changes from J.B.-funk to out-ish (not really out) styles, and there are very good solos by all involved. Ed Jackson is quite nice, would like to hear more of him. Eskelin can do no wrong in my book, and the rhythm team is great. Varner himself is an astonishing musician, for sure! However, all in all the disc leaves me lukewarm, somehow - might have as much to do with production and sound of it, as it has with the actual music. ubu

I announced the availability of this already over in the "rat"... timings don't match. Anyone knows if maybe the date is wrong, or the darkfunk download is from the second set of that date, or what? ubu -
Tal Farlow Mosaic set released in Europe?
king ubu replied to andersf's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
I could get it a bit cheaper (around 100 Euros), but I'll definitely have to pay customs (I'd guess for 20 Euros or a bit more), no matter where I get it from. In the end, it might cost about the same as the set I saw in some store here. Btw: Amazon lists the Eldridge for the same prize, so I guess the (also 7CD) Jazztet set will be at that same price as well. ubu -
Before I forget: this one features some very very nice Cannonball as well, and it has a great version of "Sermonette" (without Adderley, though):
-
Got it, but haven't had a chance to listen yet.
-
Lon, I'm not yet really sure about that 2CD set - I listened through it a few times, always with quite some time having passed in between, and it hasn't really really grown to me (yet?). The big band with Cannon though, has a few very nice things, for sure. It's more the other dates I'm insecure about. Then, let me again, this time with covers, add a big for thsi 2CD set: This one is awesome at least! It features the first Adderley quintet, with Nat, and Junior Mance. This very fine recent Fantasy release features the Newport '57 set by the same band, as well as Cannon & Nat sitting in on a lenghty jam tune with the Shearing group: Then, there are the even earlier "Summer of '55" recordings, with Nat as well: This set features the brothers on a Kenny Clarke album, on Cannon's first album, as well as Nat's first one, with Jerome Richardson on sax, and no Cannonball. Once again Keepnews freeked this one up, and you'll also need this Savoy/Denon release, "Discoveries", in order to have it all: The last of the very good early quintet discs: This one has been reissued in Verve's VME series, and it's awesome! It features the brothers with Silver-Chambers-Haynes, and Haynes in particular is smoking! ubu
