Congrats on the discography, Agustín and Mike! Of course I don't complain being listed as having helped some, although i feel bad for not yet having done all that I did indeed promise to... I'll check the 1991-11-06 date with Booby - the playing time for "I should care" is probably wrong (it's only around 6 minutes, the source you had doubles the first three, it seems - I'll check and report back). Then there's anotehr bit of talking somewhere, and the radio guy mentions at least one title of a Tete composition ("Barcelona", I think) that you don't list - but then the titles are performed as a medley, anyway, so it's difficult to sort things out. ****** And as this is not a discographical-details-thread, some thoughts on Tete's music: I listened to "It's about Blues Time" "Lunch in LA" and that early trio disc EKE listed above (with Peter & Wyboris), last week. While I'm impressed, I have to say I don't (yet? - I hope!) really "get" all of his music. I love the trio a lot, they were so good together (the bass-drum team was a seasoned one, as I understand, mainstays of the spanish jazz scene, they also did that Pedro Iturralde record date with Hamp Hawes in Barcelona, really really nice one, reissued [but now OOP I think] on Spanish or some other European Blue Note). With the later discs I got from EKE, I have, well, not exactly troubles, but it just doesn't really "click" with me. Will have to spend some more time with them, I suppose... ubu

Got a burn of this together with "News For Lulu" and a second Clusone disc. No time to listen to the two Clusones yet, but I'll report once I get a chance! ubu

I'm sure this one will come back in the hatOLOGY series some day. I just had a first listen to it a couple of days ago, as well, and wow! I really really like it! Zorn has an acidic alto sound that I love - he's a very able hardbop player for sure (we knew that from the Sonny Clark disc, I suppose), yet he transcends that (and I think in fact any) genre, screeching and squealing and having a good portion of musical fun. Yes, this is ecclecticism, but this is good! Also it's much to the benefit of the music that Lewis plays more of a background role (astonishing he is, nevertheless), as does Frisell, who is quite tasteful (moreso than I'd have expected from the little aural evidence I know - AND like, don't get me wrong, but generally I tend to consider what I know of his work ratehr as "americana" then as "jazz"). ubu

Thanks John. I'll be running to one of those cheapo large discount stores where I got most of the Miles boxes so far, they won't have many, and not for a long time either, so I got to plan...

Anyone knows the street date on our side? Is it out already?

Swiss Army Website We have a militia system, every male reaching age 20 has to serve for around 4 months, and then return to serve 3 weeks in regular intervals (they just changed that from 2 years to 1, which means: I'm out faster, also I won't have to serve all 300 days I actually should have, because of those changes). However, I blow the baritone saxophone there, playing ridiculous pop music and stiff prussian marches and other shit... usually playing along the tenor sax voice, or doing some other strange things, no one there has ears to listen, anyway. That's the drôle de guerre, really! I'm not making fun of the army as such, but if I'd be in charge, it would cost a third and be ten times as efficient. Three weeks sitting around, doing nothing, learning nothing, yet constantly rotating, without the least result. I'll have some whisky on me and will be fine Now back on topic: I'll be able to make a fine recording of today's broadcast. About the Donaueschingen one I'll ask a friend and fellow Taylor-fanatic, not sure he'll be able to record, though, so if you, Claude, can, please do! Didn't yet find the air date of the Saalfelden concert. Will report back on that. And brownie, the king is much too fat to snuggly fit into such a nice uniform... those are the creepy guys watching the pope (and sometimes shooting each other)... catholics, exclusively, so not for me. ubu

Probably one of the live recording you have. The liners say: Enregistre an public les 25, 26, et 27 join 2001 au centre culturel suisse a Paris. Matthew: no, I have the complete recording of the group's concert at the swiss Willisau Jazzfestival from August 2002. PM me if interested... ubu

That "bonus track" of yours is really nice, the only cut I listened already. I don't really see (or better: hear) the point of McLean having had problems to find changes to fit that tune etc. The horns come up with poised and very good solos.

Matthew, I don't know the studio disc of Humair's "Liberté surveillée" but I've heard some live recordings from that group and liked it a lot! It seems Humair has a diva-like character and isn't easy to please, but with that crew... Ducret, is one of the very few guitar players that was a recent ear-opener for me. He's all over the place!

Friends, John B. gave me the shoulder tap to choose another album of the week. As I happened to pick this up two or three days ago, I though why not: Jackie Mclean - Jackie's Bag (click to buy) I haven't listened to it yet, but I'll do as soon as I find an hour of spare time. The first session, Jackie's first visit to the Van Gelder studio as a BN recording artist, features Donald Byrd as his frontline parter, and the terrific rhythm section of Sonny Clark-Paul Chambers-Philly Joe Jones. The second date, more than a year later in time, and maybe worlds in musical development, features Jackie's "Connection" understudy Tina Brooks. I'm quite excited to finally have this one, as I hesitated to lay out as much as they're asking for RVGs here, but now I got it in a BN sale. I hope there's a few among you who have it and will offer some reviews and opinions! ubu

There seems to be yet another upcoming broadcast. Taylor played Saalfelden this year. Don't know when that one will be, but I guess somewhen this fall. Will be on Ö1 (Austrian radio). ubu

Taylor will play Donaueschingen, the important festival in southern Germany for the very first time on October 16. SWR2 will again broadcast (parts of) this concert. Here's the info from the website: Freitag, 29. Oktober, 23.00 ? 24.00 Uhr NOWJazz: Session ? Won't be able to record this myself (as I'll be in the army then), but I count on you, friends! ubu

Mitchell will play solo in Zurich late in November, I'll try to catch him if I can!
-
What's the problem with that one? It's been a long time I had that in the CD player, but I don't remember noticing anything...
-
what LAL said and don't forget to pick up more live Parker when you can... the Birdland stuff on Ember, for instance, and of course the Massey Hall concert (in OJCCD).

Thanks for that info, Jon! I have that music all on the Ayler tree, very very nice! Alan, thanks, too! Sounds good!

sad news, read a short obit in a newspaper yesterday. ubu

I have a soft spot for "My Name is Albert Ayler", though I'm aware that it doesn't come close to his best albums... "Summertime" is great, though! Favourite 5: Spiritual Unity, Spirits Rejoice, Hilversum... now it gets difficult... Prophecy is good, Vibrations is good, as is Copenhagen tapes (I prefer HIlversum, though), Maeght is good, so is the 2CD on Impulse... hard to choose really!

Very strange, that cover is small when you view it on the site itself!

Got this disc of his in that sale: Very nice stuff, indeed! Also heard a duo performance of his with Guy Klucevsek (Berlin Jazzfest 2003). A very interesting musician! ubu

FWIW, the first few times I heard "SNC" were in numerous "advanced" jam sessions during my freshman year of college. I wasn't playing, these guys were way out of my league at the time, I was just listening and soaking it all in. Didn't even know what it was until I asked somebody. Had only heard "some" Monk, and definitely not that tune. Had definitely heard of it though. It took me about a week to realize that the head was actually in 4/4! Nice story, Jim! I guess it CAN frighten your ass off is someone really goes deep into that tune! I LOVE the head, and can hum it everytime everywhere.

well, I always had a lively imagination, but this beats everything!

And while 14 Franks might be the prize of a CD, you would have to show me a shop first selling any new ones for less than 23 Franks or even 25... dreaded swiss prizes!
