Not sure the world needs this, but I might check it out.

Harris has one killer solo on "African Marketplace"! (Or am I mixing things up?) I'm not so sure about the Montreux. My favourite is "South Africa", "Zimbabwe" is fine, as is the MOntreux, but "South Africa" was my first encounter with Ward, and McBee, and my second Ibrahim after "African Marketplace". That one was in constant rotation on my parent's record player... ubu

Thanks ubu - it's on the way.
  5. Christy Doran played purely accoustic (classical, I think) guitar recently at Jazzfestival Willisau with Swiss bassist Heiri Känzig's group (he played bass with the Vienna Art Orchestra in the eighties), featuring a swiss drummer (Fabian Kuratli) and a third string player, Mark Feldman. Quite nice stuff! Wolfgang Muthspiel is another great guitarist playing accoustic, at least occasionally. I heard a live recording of his with the string trio Triology (two violins, a viola, I remember right) and then found the CD they did together (released on Muthspiel's own label). Nice stuff. ubu

Phil, "African Piano" is available on CD, for instance via Amazon UK. It is a fantastic disc! ubu

John, this one's real nice, BUT check out "Yarona"! That one is terrific, and definitely one of my favourite piano-trio jazz recordings! This is by far my favourite nineties and later Ibrahim recordings, by far! Great atmospheric live recording with a good rhythm team, playing some of his old hits, but in a decidedly interesting and new shape. ubu
  8. This Ellington fan (not Ellingtonian, eh? ) hit Betty Roché, Earl Hines and Johnny Hodges, but mistook Cat Anderson for Ray Nance... That may be because one thinks of Cat usually as a highnote man, but he could play excellent full-bodied mid-register trumpet... ubu
  9. This one's a real nice one, Mike! Of course I have that CD, and of course I didn't recognize it (but I get consolation from the fact that I'm not alone, supposing many of you do have that CD, otherwise, GO AND BUY!) Tate Houston I only know from the BN album he made with Curtis Fuller ("Bone & Bari"), besides these few tracks. He's indeed a very nice and meaty player! ubu
  10. that's what I expected as a reply... too late to delete my stoopid post now.
  11. So if it wasn't any dance band it still was a dance band?
  12. Fight she can as well: ubu B-)
  13. And let me add I never heard her singing, nor her name... B-)
  14. You might have just as well added a ... Seems she at least tries to fool us and act as if she can play that trumpet... source. Also she can act as if she looks good: http://www.nowtoronto.com/issues/2002-01-1...c_feature3.html ubu
  15. I think it could be any dance band from the time, possibly with a "famous" clarinet soloist sitting in. Südfunk Tanzorchester dir. Erwin Lehn? now the only one we miss is the clarinet soloist... Simon is a name for #3, by the way. Not strong on it, just thought I'd throw in his name. ubu
  16. Maurice Simon?
  17. At least I did recognize McShann (AND guess the tune right), as well as the Navarro/Clarke track (though I forgot KD was there as well). No idea about #4 but after reading the comments made by others, I'm sure I'm completely off track. Now about that S.F. Fantasy disc, I had a listen to it in a store when it was new, but forgot to note it so I'd be able to remember buying it later. A very nice compilation/reissue!

John, I like that disc quite a lot although the band does have problems... "Summertime" is awesome, one of my favourite versions of that tune. Moves me almost to tears each time I hear it!

Tony was referring to Assif Tsahar's Open Systems; Kowald was one of the band members. Yup, sorry. My reply was a bit fast, had lots of reading to do here as I wasn't online since Saturday morning. ubu
  20. Not sure, and I personally don't care as I go for CD usually, but I do think that the Mingus CBS has edited versions of tracks taht were restored for the recent Sony/Legacy 3CD reissue of that material. That one goes cheap, though, so you might as well get the LP Mosaic and the CD version from Sony, you'd ahve it all then, the tracks/albums as originally released, and the restored versions on CD. My only Mosaic LP sets are the Brooks (great), the Pepper (not too essential, but nice), and the Buck Clayton (love it, but hardly spin it). ubu
  21. This one never fails to astonish! The other one that popped up was "East Coasting", maybe the most haunting, lyrical album Mingus ever did. That band may be my favourite Mingus band ever, Dolphy and Booker notwithstanding. ubu

get it this way: http://www.buyrunt.com/water.html a great reissue of some great music! ubu
  23. I heard Shaw live with the Mingus BB last year, he was very good indeed!
  24. belated best wishes... happy birthday! ubu
