    Funny Rat

Had a wonderful time listening to this one: Wow! I really really like it! Music of great purity and beauty. Then: John Zorn The Gift Quite nice stuff. Zorn himself only plays piano and theremin on one of ten tracks, the band is Marc Ribot, Jamie Saft, Joey Baron, Cyro Baptista and Trevor Dunn, with a couple of guests sitting in, among them on one tune Dave Douglas, shining on his trumpet. The music is well, rather - what should I call that? - conventional? easy? It's got that southern laid-back feeling you alse have on Joey Baron's projects (mainly the band with Blythe-Frisell-Carter I'm thinking of, but also the band with Shepik-Cardenas-Scherr), and some south-of-the-border sounds. Ribot is playing quite undistorted, most of the time, with a sweet sound not unlike Bill Frisell's. Then, having dinner, I continued with: A great album! Ribot is on this one, as well, providing quite much to the success of the whole sound. While this may be (or: seem?) quite accessible upon the first encounter (which was the case tonight, never listened to it before, just got it, in fact), I really think it will reward repeated listens, and I have a feeling it may grow quite some over the years. It's all relatively simple, of course there's Waits' usual bag o'tricks, but there's no horns, no Tom-goes-Ol' Blue Eyes stuff, but just songs, with some guitars, a bass, and most often also some percussion. Among the songs are a few that I consider quite good, indeed. One of them, "Sins of My Father," grows to biblical lenghts and heights and depths, not unlike the quarter of an hour song Highlands on Dylan's great album "Time out of Mind". ubu

    Jim Hall

There's some real nice Jim Hall up to listen here. Here's the info: There's around 4-5 minutes of talking before the concert starts, you can skip that once you have the thing playing with RealPlayer. Of course you can also record it... ubu
  5. one of her best parts, in my opinion!
  6. "Tears..." is excellent, indeed! The only other Curson I have is this one (also on Marge/Futura): It's been quite long since I last heard it, though. ubu
  7. One of the old Blakey Bohemia discs (the orig. Messengers recording) was the same in a store here, though I did listen first, luckily...
  8. Aric, both "Repulsion" and "The Sweet Smell of Success" are fantastic films! Hope you get a chance to see the McKenzie soon! It's one of the darkest films of its time!

    Albert Ayler

Yes, but the Paris concert is about the same, we have only around 20 minutes, so there has to be more...

    Albert Ayler

not even on the ayler tree? ayler tree Disc 4 1. Our prayer [Donald Ayler] (4:25) 2. Ghosts [Ayler] | Bells [Ayler] (11:12) 3. Truth is marching in [Ayler] (7:02) 4. Omega [Ayler] (3:42) Personnel: Donald Ayler-tp; Albert Ayler-ts; Michel Sampson-vln; Bill Folwell-b; Beaver Harris-d. Berlin Jazz Festival, Berlin, Germany, 661103. That's from Berlin, not from Paris! I'd love to hear the Paris concert! Parts of it - though as Brownie suggests, OTHER parts - are on the HatArt/HatOLOGY "Lörrach/Paris" disc. ubu

  14. I think it's the Internet & website; fans find out much more quickly these days, and places like this only fan the flames. For which I'm grateful! May be, but the bad thing is I will have to spend winter without food and clothes, if this continues...
  15. It's already tagged "last chance"... they wrote (upon my request) that they think it should be around for at least two weeks. Hell, why do they move so fast? Those sets used to be "running low" for a much longer time earlier!
  16. Ralph Towner & Gary Peacock, Cully, Switzerland, 1996: http://sound.iware.ch/newsys/Espace2/1110041800.ram Should be up until November 10. Enjoy! ubu

Not sure the world needs this, but I might check it out.

Harris has one killer solo on "African Marketplace"! (Or am I mixing things up?) I'm not so sure about the Montreux. My favourite is "South Africa", "Zimbabwe" is fine, as is the MOntreux, but "South Africa" was my first encounter with Ward, and McBee, and my second Ibrahim after "African Marketplace". That one was in constant rotation on my parent's record player... ubu

Thanks ubu - it's on the way.
  20. Christy Doran played purely accoustic (classical, I think) guitar recently at Jazzfestival Willisau with Swiss bassist Heiri Känzig's group (he played bass with the Vienna Art Orchestra in the eighties), featuring a swiss drummer (Fabian Kuratli) and a third string player, Mark Feldman. Quite nice stuff! Wolfgang Muthspiel is another great guitarist playing accoustic, at least occasionally. I heard a live recording of his with the string trio Triology (two violins, a viola, I remember right) and then found the CD they did together (released on Muthspiel's own label). Nice stuff. ubu

Phil, "African Piano" is available on CD, for instance via Amazon UK. It is a fantastic disc! ubu

John, this one's real nice, BUT check out "Yarona"! That one is terrific, and definitely one of my favourite piano-trio jazz recordings! This is by far my favourite nineties and later Ibrahim recordings, by far! Great atmospheric live recording with a good rhythm team, playing some of his old hits, but in a decidedly interesting and new shape. ubu
  23. This Ellington fan (not Ellingtonian, eh? ) hit Betty Roché, Earl Hines and Johnny Hodges, but mistook Cat Anderson for Ray Nance... That may be because one thinks of Cat usually as a highnote man, but he could play excellent full-bodied mid-register trumpet... ubu
  24. This one's a real nice one, Mike! Of course I have that CD, and of course I didn't recognize it (but I get consolation from the fact that I'm not alone, supposing many of you do have that CD, otherwise, GO AND BUY!) Tate Houston I only know from the BN album he made with Curtis Fuller ("Bone & Bari"), besides these few tracks. He's indeed a very nice and meaty player! ubu
  25. that's what I expected as a reply... too late to delete my stoopid post now.
