Welcome! I can't give any insight as to my own opinion, as I don't have the Standards set. However, that statement about "standard repertoire" needing "very precise playing" I do find rather strange. Yes, that's the same Eddie Henderson. I came to know him (like most of us, I suppose) as a member of the Mwandishi sextet, and ever since liked his playing. Finally, I just got his "Sunburst" in some sale. No time to listen yet, though. When I saw him last year with the MingusBB I found him rather disappointing and unfocused. ubu

Nice to see another thread dedicated to Schweizer (please, do correct the spelling in the title!). I still don't have any of her discs, except for the Chicago Piano Solo, which I love a lot (see the other thread). Heard an hour-long programme on Swiss radio dedicated to Dollar Brand/Abdullah Ibrahim, with Schweizer being invited to present him in an interview with some radio guy. Pretty interesting to get first-hand information from her, as the Brand-influence is quite easily discernable from her playing, I'd say. Schweizer performed this year's Willisau festival in trio with Hamid Drake and Fred Anderson. I only heard two cuts on the air, but I am looking forward to hopefully hearing more (in form of a radio broadcast on swiss radio). ubu

Upon request of D.D., I typed up The Wire’s review of the recent 4CD Braxton box, as well as Leo Feigin’s reply. The review also covers Andrew Cyrille/Anthony Braxton’s “Duo Palindrome” discs on Intakt, and the hatOLOGY reissue of Max Roach/Anthony Braxton, “One in Two/Two in One”. I did not type up those parts (they follow what I did type up), as Feigin did only write about his own Braxton release. How much music is there on the Slug's date? It's the only ESP I don't have in one or the other version. Only as much so it fits easy onto one CD? Or is there more? Gokhan, I heard three or four tracks from Byron's Saalfelden 2004 concert on radio, and did mention how sloppy i found his playing in the New Releases section's "Ivey Divey"-dedicated thread. I really don't understand why he does that (supposing he COULD do better if only he WANTED). ubu

Accidentally, I met ubu today, and he implied that today might indeed beThe Funny Rat anniversary. Even more accidentally, November 7th is also an anniversary of what we, Soviet kids, were taught to call The Great October Socialist Revolution of 1917. To commemorate both of these historically important events, I will be listenig to some revolutionery Russian music - Golden Years of Soviet New Jazz Vol. I (Leo). Enjoy! I listened to most of the Koller disc on my way home on train, and I love it, thanks a lot! Won't have time for the other one till next weekend, though. ubu

Her latest effort. There's a thread about it in the New Releases forum. A great one! I hope Guy's new programme (which I saw live), "Oort-Entropy", will see an official release (there were radio broadcasts from two concerts in Switzerland, and as Intakt is a swiss label and collaborator of the two festivals, I have hope...) Now this is a great disc, if you can find it! It collects the best of several of Gruntz early albums, featuring many great musicians/soloists, among them a few famous americans, such as Elvin, Scofield, and Joe Henderson, as well as many top European artists (among them Concert Jazz Band co-founder Franco Ambrosetti). ubu

The first band I though of was Barry Guy, then Mingus Big Band, then the Instabile fellows. I guess these three are my favourite big bands of late. Gruntz is good as well, as is the Vienna Art Orchestra (though their latest efforts are not as strong and individualist anymore, I think). Then there's Maria Schneider I have seen all of these bands live, except for Gruntz. Interesting to note that so many of these bands are either European (Guy, Instabile, VAO), or directed by Europeans (Gruntz) ubu

I'm the one with the freakin' baritone sax... No jazz to be played here, no sir! They all officially *hate* jazz. Rather they play badly arranged cover versions of stoopid songs such as "Y.M.C.A." and other total crap. The worst stuff though is the ambitious dutch (no japanese this time, thank God!) stuff.

Yes, that's one of the notes I read, so it was in the Thursday papers (i wanted to write Wednesday or Thursday above, but got it wrong). Swiss german is not a written language, there is no way of spelling correctly etc. All but SMS-kind-of texts are written in proper German here. That's what his agent communicated on Wednesday. Kenyatta should have played close to Lucerne on Thursday. Kenyatta lived in Europe for more than 20 years, founded and led the Hello Jazz Music School in Lausanne, and lastly [?] was Director of Music at Bentley College in Boston. Kenyatta was born 1942 in South Carolina and grew up in New York. He became famous as a saxophonist and flautist. Inspired by contemporary bebop, he founded his first band playing Charlie Parker, John Coltrane, and Ben Webster-styled music. With pianist Wolfgang Dauner, he already 30 years ago cut one of ECM's first albums. He appeared with the best jazz and blues musicians of the world, among them B.B. King, Dr. John, or George Benson. According to Futura/Marge website: FUTURA/MARGE, this one is already OOP. Gotta hunt it down fast. Pop Wine is still in print, though. And it is very fine! Chris Woods and Curson make a good team, the rhythm section is fine as well. There's a track with false starts in the middle of the disc, which, in fact, isn't really necessary, or should be at the end of the CD. However, the actual tracks are great!

As he lived in Lausanne, Switzerland, there were short notes in the daily papers (Wednesday? Tuesday? Being in the army at the moment I lose track of weekdays...) I don't really know his music, but I'm inclined to get to know it better. ubu
