    Tony Fruscella

Thanks for this link, Mike! Printed it to read on the way home after work!
  2. Same favourites here! Add Evans' fantastic solo on Russell's All About Rosie on that third stream album on Columbia. And maybe that date with Miles which yielded a great Evans solo on "Love for Sale" (I think there's touches of Monk in there). ubu
  3. Mail sent!
  4. Strange is that it's on backorder, but once you put it in your cart, it's again shipping in 1 to 2 days... I didn't go for it, by the way.
  5. Recently got this one: Beautiful tunes, and beautiful playing! Scott is moving on his three tracks.
  6. I remember listening to the original broadcast. But I hardly can remember if Bley sat in with Oregon - I do remember Glen Moore accompanied Bley on his set, which worked very well. The original broadcast had some Oregon numbers as well. When working on the Basie discography I got some listings from SWR2 - six or seven recordings they did of "Treffpunkt Jazz"-concerts from 1967-1980. I got photocopies of their original typewriter-notes, and they have a very chaotic system of taking hand-written notes on those files, indicating which tracks they have used for which broadcast... Seems they put together something different for each broadcast. ubu
  7. http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio/aod/radio3_aod.shtml?jon3 Haven't heard it yet, but it should be nice. Carla Bley's "Lost Chords" quartet (Sheppard, Swallow, Drummond) and the great Gilad Atzmon, both from this year's London Jazzfestival. ubu
  8. Though I'd let those among who are interested know of two upcoming broadcasts on SWR2: Thursday, December 9, 19:05-20:15 Paul Bley live in Stuttgart (with Oregon?) In 1974 Bley appeared at a "Treffpunkt Jazz" concert in Stuttgart. First he playe solo, then performed together with Oregon. I don't know if only the solo parts will be broadcasted, or if also some of the music with Oregon will be heard. They announce this only as "Paul Bley in Stuttgart", but the description mentions Oregen (as I do above). Friday, December 10, 23:00-24:00 Medesky, Martin & Wood live at "Enjoy Jazz" Recorded live at Alte Feuerwache Mannheim, October 12, 2004 (link to "enjoy jazz" website))

I will let you know about the Brax. I might be gladly take up your offer, as that disc seems to be hard to find already (same applies to the ICP), and I can't afford those two right now. Will have to wait a bit, and wait for the arrival of several open orders first anyway. I got an earful of this (or another?) Gregorio disc in a store and had that same impression. Probably one to skip. ubu

Let me offer another . The playing is at such a high level that it's almost frightening. It's really amazing the level of self-assurance exhibited on this disk; all play as if one and everything just clicks. Thanks. It will stay on "the list"! The Eskelin as well, by the way. I never heard anything by him that I didn't at least consider solid. ubu
  11. Funny story! I suppose to *really* learn it, you'd have to grow up playing from childhood. I started when I was around 16 or 17 and tried for maybe two years, but didn't have nearly as much time as one would need to make any advancements. However, having seen Zakir Hussain play (in really nice small venues in Zurich) was a great experience. Him together with Hariprasad Chaurasia -- musical heaven!
  12. That's almost like a flashback! Thanks for the link. That's all the stuff I tried to play back when...
  13. That's right. And then the ragas are for moods, time of day, of year etc, right? If that's right, too, I at least retain a basic knowledge (and a couple of nice CDs, of course).
  14. yup, that's it. was this too amateurish and annoying for the King as well? only listened to the first few seconds... and then you hurried back to that crazy Korean site, right? exaclty, to listen to the Carmen ouverture, sung in Korean
  15. yup, that's it. was this too amateurish and annoying for the King as well? only listened to the first few seconds... Those words to describe the rhythms (i.e. Teental), they relate to the number and subdivision of beats, if I remember right. It's looong back that I was a bit into this kind of things, though (ok, it can't be more than 7 years, but then those years have been so eventful it seems like decades...)

    Funny Rat

I'll check it out, but the "Fallhöhe" would be quite huuuge after all the crap I have listened to this morning...
  17. yup, that's it.
  18. This is on tonight, 3sat, 1:35-2:50 a.m.! I heard parts of both the All Stars set (Hargrove, Hampton, Griffin & rhythm) and the set with the NDR big band on radio already, last week. Now this will add the visuals... Don't miss it, Mike! ubu
  19. They're called Bols. There's that one cut on "Other Aspects", the Dolphy rag-bag CD on Blue Note, with an annoying (and probably, as far as I can tell, amateurish) Indian percussionist (or percussionist playing Indian handdrums). Gets on my nerves quite some. I never actually saw any Tabla player loudly speaking all that stuff while playing in concert. Maybe now and then, as an additional means to sculpt his accompaniment. (I attempted to play the Tabla a bit myself, in what seems like a previous life now. Still own them, though.) ubu
  20. for the one on "Turbulent Flow" (I still have to hunt that New Directions disc, it never shows up in the bins here...)

Again thanks for the reinforcement. Going from what I read about "Thesis" that's one of the few currently available hats that I definitely won't get. I am rather fond of Eskelin, though I haven't caught up in recent times. Now how about that Lacy?

Thanks gnhrtg! I thought the ICP was OOP for quite some time (as some others now listed as "soon going OOP" on the hat website). I'll keep my eyes open, though at the moment I shouldn't buy even more... always the same problem, backlog growing, listening time, well... not too much, as always. ubu
