Glad to see I'm not the only one who's confused! This sucks! I mean, these new reissues are certainly done very well, compared to some of the crappy digipack editions Atlantic/Warner released in recent years, but then I do want additional tracks, and I do want at least all that was on the original CD release. Even stranger is that the Rhino website has not listed this disc at all, though it clearly says it was produced by Rhino! Paul, thanks - at least one thing is clear. So I wait for the new reissue of "After Hours" and hope that one will include "Black Coffee" where "Ain't Misbehavin'" should've been!?!

Ok ok, it's not Dizzy, but Mr. B - I just got that Spotlite CD, by the way, but had not chance to listen so far. Also, I have the Hartman and the Prez track

Milan, thanks a lot for your compilation! Lots of old and nice music on it! However, I decided not to post any track-by-track post. I find it harder and harder to find any meaningful words to write about music, and the disc you compiled mostly contained music of styles of which I hardly scratched the surface as a listener. I recognized some tunes ("In the Mood", "Star Eyes", "Four Brothers"), as well as a couple of artist (Bird, Dizzy's first big band), and I think Basie. Probably several big names are there (Prez? Goodman?). Also I got a bad feeling that at least one cut comes from some disc you got from me... and I did not recognize. Now some things I like and thought about while listening: #4 has very nice saxophone tutti writing! Creamy. #5 should be Bird, yes? Was too lazy to check my Bird, but I don't think I have any version of "Star Eyes" of his that's cut after his solo. #6 that modulating phrase during the tenor passage reminds me of Prez quite some - I'm not sure if it's him, though. Also I'm too lazy to go through all my Prez stuff... #8 does the announcer say "Artie Bernstein"? Is this a Goodman recording? Tough or Krupa? #12 is this the original version of "Four Brothers"? My Herman still is very thin, and I don't have any of his Mosaics yet. #16 very nice alto here! Willie Smith? Guess not, no. Who's the singer? Good stuff! #20 would be the one tune I could pin down, weren't I too lazy to do so... Many many thanks for this nice disc, Milan!

Now I just had a first listen to this disc I recently got in a sale (it's fantastic and highly recommended!): Now track #3 is (or rather should be) "Black Coffee", on which Ray is supposed to play in trio with backing by the great Oscar Pettiford on bass. Now the original liners, the discography page of the booklet, and the tracklisting of both the CD reissue and the reprinted LP backcover list #3 as "Black Coffee", but actually #3 is not "Black Coffee" but a terrific version of "Ain't Misbehavin'", mentioned only in David Ritz' new liner notes. A search here for "Back Coffee" did not find anything related to this, thus I thought I start a thread discussing it. The reissue in question is the very nice Rhino 2004 one, with very good sound, packed in Jewel Case, part of the "Atlantic Jazz Masters" series (which is printed inside the traycard, where you can read it with the jewel case closed). Anyone has this disc? Is it just mine that has this error? And where is "Ain't Misbehavin'" from? Sounds a lot like Fathead (who is mentioned playing on this tune in Ritz' notes), and could well be from the same dates, BUT it was NOT on this album, originally, right? thanks for any insightful help or comment! ubu

I'm glad to hear this. I took a chance and grabbed this, too. I figured it would be hard to go wrong for $5. I'm looking forward to hearing this one now. I also bought the disc you highly recommended, but have not had time to listen to it yet. I will post my thoughts once I have some time to listen to them. Why didn't you tell me BEFORE I sent in my order?
-
I've got this disc, too, and it is indeed very good! Will have to check out more of Lindberg's recordings!
-
I just never came around to getting more. I'm buying too much stuff all the time anyway, and I'm not proceeding in any strategical way...

This one looks tasty! Get two of them if you have a chance to listen and like it, please! I don't know about that trio you mentioned, never actually heard them! But you've heard Sonny Simmons, haven't you? Nothing except this one:

Thanks for your offer, Tony, but with 20$ plus shipping customs should not be a problem, so I ordered them directly. Anyone knows about their shipping fees? They charge me 4.50$, which is what's displayed before you enter your address (when the website/calculation supposedly believes your ordering from teh US). Do they have same shipping fees for US/Overseas? Their overseas shipping is quite high. Check it in the backoffice section of the site. 10.50$ makes more sense, thanks!

Weston's "Carnival" is highly recommended! Some great Billy Harper there!

David, I missed this post when you originally wrote it. Knowing your affectation for solo bass records, may I direct your attention to this interesting-looking one? http://www.nottwo.com/PelnaPlyta.php?Id=1&W=&Od=&Off= Oles is a very fine player, so this disc could be good. He sat in with Brad Mehldau's trio, for instance, and seems to be one of the best Polish bass players (I believe he exiled, but I'm not sure).

word! (another Mingus fanatic here!) oh, put the 1964 Europe stuff also on the list of things you get BEFORE you get the rest ("Great Concert", "Mingus in Europe" 2 vols., and some others). Same for the three Impulse albums! All terrific, in my opinion! ubu
-
I quite like hatOLOGY cover design. Most of mine look like new still. Impulse, well, the older ones were a bit better (such as the ones mentioned), but newer ones (for instance the Coltrane/Shepp Newport) got very flimsy, just one layer of cardboard where you put in the cover, which is at least twice as heavy as that cardboard... can't hold long.

'specially for you, my friend: -
Tom - I just saw a "revised" box of this at Fry's the other day. It's in a tall book form, like the re-released Miles boxes. If you're looking for it, it might suit ya better... I also saw a new version like that of the 3 cd Monk box that Noj mentioned. Yes, I saw both of these in long box versions, but I never yet saw a miles in long box version, strangely. The Monk, in my opinion, is a very nice one (the small one).
