Complete Capitol Recordings Krupa/James
king ubu replied to wesbed's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
...and got my box today! No customs this time! Cool, very cool! Only a month and a half till you received your Mosaic box? The shipment gets stuck going into your country? It simply sits in the customs building? For what? Till somebody looks at it and passes it on through? I ordered something from Belgium in the Spring of 2003. It was at my front door in Arizona, courtesy of UPS, in five days. No no, I went the surface way - chances are much smaller that the custom guys look close! There was a time they opened almost each airmail package I ordered from the US... quite a pain. And besides, my backlog is outgrowing me, at this moment, thus I can wait a bit. Airmail can arrive within four or five days, however a large Mosaic package would probably take around two weeks, too, if not more. The Shorter/Kelly VeeJays took six weeks with airmail, due to the custom fellows, thus I gladly wait six week for surface delivery AND safe possible custom fees. -

...and got my box today! No customs this time! Cool, very cool! Would have cost me around 25$ if I had to pay them, but it seems this time they did believe the total value of "35$" on the custom-sticker... (last time, when I ordered the VeeJays, they kept them at customs, and asked me to send them the full invoice, and I had to send them a photocopy of the yellow thing. It took even longer with that shit, and I had to pay a mighty customs fee...) ubu -
Someone better grab that Teddy Edwards! A fantastic disc! (Glad, by the way, my empty wallet lets me stay away from the Bethlehems...) ubu

Phil, thanks a lot! I have that Camden reissue - marvellous music! There are a few related threads in the artists section: Kippie Moeketsi Abdullah Ibrahim Johnny Dyani ubu

What I forgot to say: thanks a lot, jgthomas!

Finally got this one! A great compilation, indeed! Only I'd wish for a complete discography! Amazon UK has it for 9 £. ubu

Wise decision. Let us know about Silva. brownie thought for 8 Euros it's worth a try, but that it wasn't one of his favourite Silvas, so I decided to give it a try. The Mori/Parkins is great, by the way!
-
Ordered the Silva, and skipped the Parker.

Just listening because, haven't seen the movie, but when he died, I recorded a 93 Las Vegas performance and a 2000 (or later) swiss performance off TV. Good stuff. Then a shop here has an Atlantic/Rhino etc sale, and I picked an Otis Redding, a Booker T, and said Ray Charles discs... and I really really enjoy the Charles! I will look for the DVD, it seems! European edition available? Guess I need to read that thread, right?
-
would be very cool in this case! Is there the -option here, as well? How are these? And is the "Birth of Soul" box that "complete" collection of his R&B recordings, or is that yet something else?
-
Thanks Mike! But now, what to do? The Charles/Bags is the old 2CD set, in a big old double-size jewel case, right? I could get that here. What else do I need? Can you give me the album/CD titles, please? I'm only just getting into Charles (believe it or not)!

That's strange because I really like WHISTLE STOP. Everyone is in fine form: Hank, the leader, a top-notch rhythm section that is just cooking. Maybe you don't dig the compositions, although I find that hard to believe as well. Give it another chance. Whistle Stop is an awesome record, in my opinion! A love-at-first-listen affair, for me! Maybe my favourite Dorham, together with the Jazz Prophets' recordings.

I thought this one was quite weak. There should be my sort-of-review somewhere up wen we discussed Evan Parker - a couple of dozen pages above. Don't know the Silva thing. What reissue is that? - if ZYX I would sugest you skip it, as they have dreadful remastering. Not sure, it says ESP (NL), thus I'd say Calibre? AMG says the Parker is very good, but I'm not sure from their comments that it's one for me...

About 3 CD box: is it Mr. B. box you're talking about, or... No, this one: brownie linked it above, it's where those Prez tracks from the Carnegie Hall concerts come from... and you know where mine came from

Near & Middle Eastern World Music Thread
king ubu replied to White Lightning's topic in Miscellaneous Music
Markus Stockhausen was there, too, with his strange small (C?) trumpet and some delay/echo stuff, very very nice musician, he, too! Bass and drums were Dieter Ilg and Jojo Mayer. Yusef is a vey charismatic person, I think. His singing is rather idiosyncratic, and I think not everyone would like it. Live though it propels tons of energy! I have this CD of his: It features some of the same musicians I saw him with live, but it's more of a laid-back affair. I find it very very nice. Somehow I cannot take Abou-Khalil anytime, I think I slightly prefer Yousef, but then also I see that Abou-Khalil's projects are more interesting, more elaborate, and have higher ambitions, too. -
Thanks Mike, seems like I can live for some time without getting the Eckstine (though I have his VME and actually like it rather well, it's sort of a time capsule). I plan tough to get the nice little box, so thanks, nothing missing.

Re: Mr. B.: I got an earful of the Spotlite disc last night - great stuff! I realized the track in question is not on that disc, but I don't have the studio recordings. Any CD recommended?
-
I know the question wasn't directed at me, Mike, but I thought I'd respond anyway. I don't exactly have "doubt"- I know it's not from SONGS FROM THE HEART, and not Hartman. I have nearly all of his recordings, and although Hartman is not a "bad" guess in that he did have that lush baritone voice, he never crossed my mind on this track 15. I'm convinced it's Joe Williams (and seeing that a certain other member with pretty decent ears had already gone with JW, I'm even more convinced. ). Quite a relieve to read this! Mike, I had no time to check (and was already offline when you posted, sorry), but my ears thought about Williams, too, when I listened to the disc, however, as I chose not to offer insight-less track-by-track comments, I did not mention him. And, no, I don't have that whole 3CD box (it's very expansive here, would have to search online, but not right now) - I just have the Prez-featuring tracks, and guess from whom I got them?
-
Anyone here knows these two CDs? Alan Silva Skillfulness (ESP) Parker/Akchoté/Casserley/Ryan Live at les instants chavires (Leo) I want to get the Parkins/Mori disc, and the above two are available at the Mego-related (?) distributor mdos.at for 8 Euros. ubu

Glad to see I'm not the only one who's confused! This sucks! I mean, these new reissues are certainly done very well, compared to some of the crappy digipack editions Atlantic/Warner released in recent years, but then I do want additional tracks, and I do want at least all that was on the original CD release. Even stranger is that the Rhino website has not listed this disc at all, though it clearly says it was produced by Rhino! Paul, thanks - at least one thing is clear. So I wait for the new reissue of "After Hours" and hope that one will include "Black Coffee" where "Ain't Misbehavin'" should've been!?!
-
Ok ok, it's not Dizzy, but Mr. B - I just got that Spotlite CD, by the way, but had not chance to listen so far. Also, I have the Hartman and the Prez track
-
Milan, thanks a lot for your compilation! Lots of old and nice music on it! However, I decided not to post any track-by-track post. I find it harder and harder to find any meaningful words to write about music, and the disc you compiled mostly contained music of styles of which I hardly scratched the surface as a listener. I recognized some tunes ("In the Mood", "Star Eyes", "Four Brothers"), as well as a couple of artist (Bird, Dizzy's first big band), and I think Basie. Probably several big names are there (Prez? Goodman?). Also I got a bad feeling that at least one cut comes from some disc you got from me... and I did not recognize. Now some things I like and thought about while listening: #4 has very nice saxophone tutti writing! Creamy. #5 should be Bird, yes? Was too lazy to check my Bird, but I don't think I have any version of "Star Eyes" of his that's cut after his solo. #6 that modulating phrase during the tenor passage reminds me of Prez quite some - I'm not sure if it's him, though. Also I'm too lazy to go through all my Prez stuff... #8 does the announcer say "Artie Bernstein"? Is this a Goodman recording? Tough or Krupa? #12 is this the original version of "Four Brothers"? My Herman still is very thin, and I don't have any of his Mosaics yet. #16 very nice alto here! Willie Smith? Guess not, no. Who's the singer? Good stuff! #20 would be the one tune I could pin down, weren't I too lazy to do so... Many many thanks for this nice disc, Milan!

Now I just had a first listen to this disc I recently got in a sale (it's fantastic and highly recommended!): Now track #3 is (or rather should be) "Black Coffee", on which Ray is supposed to play in trio with backing by the great Oscar Pettiford on bass. Now the original liners, the discography page of the booklet, and the tracklisting of both the CD reissue and the reprinted LP backcover list #3 as "Black Coffee", but actually #3 is not "Black Coffee" but a terrific version of "Ain't Misbehavin'", mentioned only in David Ritz' new liner notes. A search here for "Back Coffee" did not find anything related to this, thus I thought I start a thread discussing it. The reissue in question is the very nice Rhino 2004 one, with very good sound, packed in Jewel Case, part of the "Atlantic Jazz Masters" series (which is printed inside the traycard, where you can read it with the jewel case closed). Anyone has this disc? Is it just mine that has this error? And where is "Ain't Misbehavin'" from? Sounds a lot like Fathead (who is mentioned playing on this tune in Ritz' notes), and could well be from the same dates, BUT it was NOT on this album, originally, right? thanks for any insightful help or comment! ubu

nice to see the thread in which I'm GOD up again! ubu

I'm glad to hear this. I took a chance and grabbed this, too. I figured it would be hard to go wrong for $5. I'm looking forward to hearing this one now. I also bought the disc you highly recommended, but have not had time to listen to it yet. I will post my thoughts once I have some time to listen to them. Why didn't you tell me BEFORE I sent in my order?
