Would love to read your thoughts and/or review of any of these when the time is right ... picked the other nine today sort of my own x-mas gift to myself (one has to find a reason and explanation, no? serious sign of addictive behaviour...) I love the design of the series. The covers are nice, all done by the same artist. The actual front covers are parts (rather small parts) of two quadratic (80X80 cm, I think) paintings, which are displayed if you open up the cardboard cover. Two paintings that sort of belong together per disc. The notes (original ones by Val Wilmer, mostly, new ones by Philippe Carles) are very nice, too, not of the learned sort, but more of the reminiscing kind, telling stories, remembering some of the recently deceased musicians (Lacy & Waldron). A real good series, in my opinion, though it will take at least a few weeks to have a first listen to all the discs. ubu

I realized, and I wondered what you meant... will try and pick up a few more in an hour or so, after work ubu

Thanks Gokhan, I never ordered from them so far, and I always forget about their existence...

uhm, first I have to get the missing ten Free Americas, then prob. some Mosaic going OOP, and a store here has the Jazztet set for an ok prize, too... Where do you buy Soulnote/Blacksaint from? No distribution here, none at all. ubu

You are correct not correct, as far as I'm concerned...

Just tried to provide a direct link, but that doesn't work at this computer (at work, half the www blocked, and no RealPlayer...) Will try again tonight. ubu

Well, there are not that many solo saxophone projects overall, are there? Meanwhile, Gebbia mentions on his website that Zen Widow trio will visit Switzerland (Zurich) as part of its European tour, some time in April. Cool! Keep me updated! Rote Fabrik, or where will they play? Sphères?
-
Glad you liked the Gebbia... uh... turd John B, hope you liked the show! (did couw also listen? I maintain that swiss german does not sound nearly as strange as Dutch, though with Hans also in here, I might be a minority...) Gokhan, you're certainly right regarding the lenght of tunes on the Humair Willisau disc. Thanks for your review, though! ubu

Couldn't you be happy with us Europeans that at least once there are CDs we can get cheaper than you?

Sounds good! And knowing P.L.M. is (temporarily) absent, we can rave about Pope without anyone spoiling the fun big goes to this one:

The most consistent Blue Note 50's and 60's leader

On topic: Hank was who came to mind first, then Hancock, Silver, and Blakey. McLean... well, not sure his output was that consistent. ubu -

Is that 3-CD set of his stuff still in print? How's the sound on that? Don't bother about sound, get it! It's one of the most essential sets to have! (Sound is fine, but my ears are not the ones to be trusted about that...) ubu -
PMed Jan Strom who confirmed that somebody at The Wire goofed! The 'Flowers for Albert' track is played by Grimes with David Murray and Hamid Drake. The Wire will have a correction in their January issue. Thanks for clearing this! I wondered, as the Wire also mentions "concerts", and "parts of which" were going to be released on Ayler. Also the Wire give Murray composer credits. It did look strange from first sight. And also, the drummer who plays on that track is Hamid Drake - unless he was cloned. Thank God no need to clone him, read brownie's post

These are all part of my collection for some time now, and they all come recommended! The one with Trane is great, don't let any strange critical objections keep you from buying it! Bought my first OJC-panic disc, yesterday (the ONLY non-ZYX-digipack-crap-sound and non-Limited-Edition OJC they had at the store, HELL, the ONLY ONE!!! Did I say already CD stores here suck?):

After the Rudd, Wright, and Shorter, I also gave the AEC's "Phase One" a listen, though only in the background. Sounded very nice. Two LP-side-long cuts, slowly building. Three more general remarks: - both the Lacy and the Waldron/Lacy have bonus tracks (alternates, some differing in lenght very much from the masters). - sets are numbered (backside, lower right corner) - mine have nos. between 300 and 2500, so there must be at least 3000 of these. - the packaging ressembles the one of the Verve Elite discs a bit, only the cardboard is thicker, and three-fold only. The booklets are printed on real nice heavy paper, too. Thumbs up for how these look! ubu

EKE, I'll post and mail out a direct link to the archived show once it's there! then listen y'all. It's fun hearing the guy speak. You may want to record it and play at higher speed. He has this Swiss accent you know... hehe, that is not a swiss accent, that is swiss dialect, just as I talk all day long... and you dutchies sound strange to my ears, too (there was an announcement by a dutch radio speaker somewhere on the Cherry Multikulti I grabbed...). ubu (the swiss)

I got the Rudd and Braxton so far but will make another visit to Paris this weekend and, based on your comments, will probably also pick-up the Wright. Haven't listened to the Braxton solo sides yet but gave two spins to the Rudd and although there are many great moments I'm not yet sure about what to think of the disc as a whole as there is also some wanderin' here and there, but worhtwhile for sure, that I can say even now. I love the Rudd! Will have completed a first listen in only a couple of minutes, but I can already say I love it (that is different from how good it actually is, of course). The bass player loses a bit of focus in the second half, I think, so I don't consider him as good anymore as my last post made believe. He's no slouch, though, for sure!

Repeating a post from the correct thread: ************** Rudd, Wright, Lacy, Waldron/Lacy, AEC Phase One, and Alan Shorter. The goof on the Wright is not so bad, as the front text is just a sticker on the shrinkwrap, and once that is off, the goof is only on the spine. Listened to the Shorter, not sure I really like it, but will need a few more listens. Then went on to the Wright, and HELL THAT ONE IS GOOD!!! Beautiful music, on all accounts, Howard and Wright match very well, Few is cool, and Art Taylor - odd man out, his first "free" date the liners say (was it his last, too?) - is GREAT! Now started the Rudd. Should be nice if it goes on like it started... Oh, and the cover of the Lacy says Aebi is no cello only, while the Waldron/Lacy says "cello & vocal"... ************** The Rudd has now been half-listened, and wow! Tchicai is cool, and that bass player, Finn van Eyben (never heard of him), is doing some nice things, together with Louis Moholo! I bet this is essential, for us Rudd fans, as there are so few of his recordings available. ubu

Just in case anyone's interested: Interview parts are only around 15 minutes, all together. If you wait till the show is archived, you can skip them in Real Player. ubu
