  1. Oh, and I'm sure they made a remake of the Eisenstein film, right?
  2. Do they have a replication of this in Odessa, Texas?
  3. TEXAS RULES!
  4. Don't know much of/about Swedish jazz, but this one's recommended: The trio stuff on disc 2 is great! ubu
  5. I'm sure Dewey would agree on that!
  6. my money's on the odds that batitista's not even aware of that recording... Or Sadao Watanabe's 1985 release, Parker's Mood. That would have been Blue Note's business, I guess?

That's Phase One, which is the best of these three AEoC reissues. Excellent sound quality as well. I wish there was more material available from these sessions. Flurin, you listened to Braxton yet? Nope, but as I said, I listened to his London Jazz Fest 04 concert (or parts of it, 55 or 60 minutes), and I like that well enough to consider getting into Braxton a bit... will spin them soon!
  8. Jelly Roll Morton Art Hodes Meade Lux Lewis Albert Ammons (at least they're overlooked here...)
  9. And here's the Savoy disc: This is not a complete release of Navarro's Savoy appearances. Also he is on a Dexter Gordon date that can be found on the Dexter CD "Settin' the Pace" (which again is not containing everything Gordon did for Savoy...) ubu
  10. Here's what's on the Jazzland/Fantasy CD: These are air shots of Dameron's band, this was released as a Navarro disc most probably because he's got the bigger name... ubu
  11. Definitely lots of beautiful music here! The Jazzland stuff is (partially?) on the disc in my last post, some (all?) of the BN is there, as are some Savoy takes and some non-Jazzland live recordings. I suppose the date for the last two tracks is inaccurate, though. This is discussed in the 4CD set Charlie Parker at Birdland Vol. 1 (Ember/TKO). ubu
  12. Not to repeat too many that have already been mentioned... some favourites of mine like Costa, Perkins, Williamson etc. A young swiss piano player called Hans Feigenwinter definitely deserves recognition, hope he'll get some in years to come. Jodie Christian John Young Duke Jordan (despite all the bad rap by Parker cognoscenti) George Gruntz (more of a band leader in past decades, but he started out as a fine hardbop piano player in the late fifties). Irene Schweizer (she is just MUCH better than you all believe ...) Richie Powell (I stop doing what I'm doing as often during his solos as during Brownie's or Land's or Rollins' when listening to the Brown-Roach crew - what a sad early loss, and much sadder since often people only tend to regret Brownie's death in that dreaded accident) Tadd Dameron (I just like his piano playing a lot, "arranger's piano", I suppose) Mike Westbrook And to end: yes to Kenny Werner!

Flurin has them all. I hate him. Yup, have them all! Tell me if you need help, David! I could hook you up with the phone number of the store I got them (the 2CD solo goes at the same prize as all the other Free Americas). Tony, I bet the Free Americas shall be renamed in the US, how about "French Fries - The undermining Freedom Music Series" or something similar? Maybe you just need to be a bit more creative in searching and you'll see they're already being distributed... I agree with David on the Wright, as well as on the Shorter, though I have to say I didn't think the Shorter is THAT bad. Need to give it a spin again. Of the AECs I only gave a spin to one, so far: the one with only two long tracks, one of them dedicated to Ayler. Fabulous (but what early AEC isn't)! ubu
  14. Nice to see a thread on di Battista! I consider him one of my favourite alto saxophonists of late. His sound is big and beautiful, and he's beyond being a virtuoso, it seems. I heard several live gigs of his quartet with Rosario Bonaccorso (b), André Ceccarelli (d), and Eric Legnini (p). They must be one of the best hard-/post-bop units around, with VERY open ears, interacting in a way that goes far beyond the usual bop band. I just picked up Parker's Mood in a used copy-crap version this week and didn't yet have a time to listen, but it seems to be more of an all star affair, with Barron and Riley replacing his bandmates. I wish his quartet (which is, or probably was, sometimes expanded to be a quintet with the addition of Flavio Boltro, another italian Blue Note or ex-Blue Note recording artist) would do a record (or even better: a live record)! Besides the Parker disc I have "Round About Roma" and have to admit that I didn't yet really warm to it. It's a very subtle record, thus I understand it might sound like smooth jazz to some ears, but I think there IS more to it than that. Will have to spin it again. Whatever: big to di Battista! (by the way: the Elvin connection: Elvin called him up to play in his band, which seems - if Battista's interviews are to be believed - to have been of crucial importance for di Battista's musical growth and evolving) ubu
  15. Have a good one, Tom! Happy Birthday! ubu (who owes you a mail, I know...)

huh? I'm right here Doing fine, and don't feel like announcing anything, as I'll be proven wrong by some funny rat anyway... Gave a listen to both Braxton's and Sam River's sets from 2004's London Jazz Festival. The Braxton consists of one 45+ minute piece and an encore and is not the complete concert, but all that was broadcasted by BBC. Fantastic music, in my opinion! The Rivers is all there was, 40 minutes of his trio, and 40 minutes of the "Rivbea Orchestra UK", featuring several of UK's best musicians, it seems. Very nice concert, too, though somehow I fail to totally warm to the trio Rivers has been leading for the last years. I always find their music good and interesting, but it just doesn't fully click with me. ubu

Just in case anyone needs another to pick up the Ayler Hilversum disc, here it is: big ! Definitely one of my favourite Ayler recordings! ubu
  18. oh, looka here, I found another one! anyone can give some feedback on this one?
  19. What other Mosaics are there, besides the one tjobbe mentioned and this one, which so far is my favorite?
  20. So what is an "organissimo"?
  21. Don't have the Select (yet), but that one album that came out in the West Coast series is certainly a case in point! Two tracks that I love and can again and again enjoy immensely are the opening track of Johnny Griffin's "The Conversation", and the Grant Green/Sonny Clarke/ART BLAKEY (!!!) take of "Ain't Necessarily So"! And I can always take any Dollar Brand with horns for cheering up, for instance "No Fear, No Die", "South Africa", or "African Marketplace". Also any of his Kaz/Camden ZA recordings work wonders.

these are lossless formats, nothing is lost, it is all there. the final size depends on the complexity of the music, but indeed 50% is the usual compression rate, usually slightly less. So one CD filled to the brink with 80 mins of music would be about 400Mb. Thanks for clearing! My problem then is why we don't use these formats to burn on CDs, would save some space, wouldn't it? ubu

Just to add a bit to my sound quality / compression statement: I don't really know that much about it, but having gotten started on www.easytree.org, downloading tons of fine live music, usually in the FLAC or SHN formats (which compress WAVs to +/- half of their size, seemingly lossless, or at least loss is kept at such low rate that one doesn't notice anything), and an hour's worth of music is considerably larger than 100MB, more like 400 or 500 MB.

Am I the only old-fashioned guy here who doesn't have the least interest in downloading anything of the Leo stuff? I got a feeling that a 100MB download for one album still includes *quite some* compression, no? Also, the prize of 10$ somehow seems too high. Does one at least get full cover scans in the download-package? And what's the albums up for download? All discs that are readily available? If this was an attempt at making music available that is out of print, it might be interesting, as an idea, but still 10$... I'd rather pay 12 or 13 or 15 and have the real CD. ubu
  25. The vinyl Merritt can be heard here: http://www.engine-studios.com/vpp/Jazz/Pag...erson25_37.html A programme such as GoldWave allows you to record something you're currently listening to on your computer, though I suppose quality of a CDR of such a webstream wouldn't too good. ubu
