So have some swiss chocolate on me! Happy birthday! ubu

Listening to this one now: Glen Hall and OutSource, The Roswell Incident (Leo Records): Pretty nice playing by all involved: Glen Hall (ts,ss,bcl, bass fl,electr), Allan Molnar (vib), Michael Morse (b), Michael Occhipinti (g,bjo), Banjo Barry Romberg (d), Roswell Rudd (tb). The music is really good, I think. Occhipinti is a nice player, so is Hall, so is Molnar, and the rhythm section is quite good, too. Then, there's Rudd sitting in here and there, and you gotta love Rudd, don't you? ubu

Giving the Hampton another listen (first time yesterday), and it's a beautiful session! Very relaxed playing by both Hamp and Svend Asmussen. The setting of just violin, vibes, bass (NHOP doing his usual great job) and drums (Thigpen, swinging like mad) is very nice! Swedish pianist Rune Öfwerman sits in on the title track only. A very light sound with some very nice textures, for instance when the violin is "comping" behind a Hamp solo. Somehow there's a Hamp-ness to it, in that it is not just relaxed and laid-back, but has a vitality and drive that is usually to be found in his music, yet still his soloing is so nice flowing, as is Asmussen's. Gave the Kessel/Mitchell a spin too and liked it, as well as half of the Braff. That one may end up as one of my favourites of the series. But then I still need to give the Carter, the Blakey/Stitt and the Farmer a listen. The ones I miss are the Bebop Session and the Chet Baker. Anymore opinions on the Chet? ubu

I voted 5000 when the thread was started, then went back to measure it... took some time as I never was sure if it would still keep growing... Seriously: I counted two years ago, had 3500+ and have been too lazy to count again ever since (also my CDs are partially unorganized, meaning I have an A-Z rack, but tons of discs lying around all over, too). With you people always making me want to buy more, I guess I'm safe to assume I'm somewhere between 5000 and 6000, maybe past that, too, but frankly I don't care. And as to how I listen to my discs, Moose's post describes that in a good way. ubu

Will add it to the "list"... thanks! Now listening to the Billie Holiday Columbia set ubu

Didn't listen to much ratty music of late, but this morning gave a listen to a Sun Ra All Stars recording from 1983's Berlin Jazz Fest, with Lester Bowie, Don Cherry, Allen, Gilmore, Shepp, Don Moye, Clifford Jarvis, Richard Davis, and Philly Joe. Quite nice stuff! Now spinning an Air live recording from Chicago, 1981. First time I hear them. Guess I'll need to get the Nessa(s?), right? ubu

Don't forget "Crazy! Baby" - one of his best, and probably my favorite session without any horns! The live 2CD set available in the RVG series, "Groovin' at Smalls'" is another great one without horns. ubu

Which Mosaic Are You Enjoying Right Now?
king ubu replied to Soulstation1's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
Have gotten immesurable joy from listening to discs 4-6 of the Django set! What a great musician he was! ubu -
impossible to vote here... a few other important ones: Intakt (Switzerland, www.intaktrec.ch/) Hat Records (Switzerland, www.hathut.com) FMP/Free Music Production (Germany, www.fmp-online.de/) ubu

Picked that disc up in some sale some time ago, liked it quite a lot, too! Will have to give it a spin again. I believe that neither Sambeat nor Puig are german, but probably Spanish. Sambeat made discs with Brad Mehldau (the Rossy brothers are Spanish too, aren't they?). Here's the cover: And here's the Valle profile from the ACT website: (source: http://www.actmusic.com/valle-bio.htm) ubu

Which Mosaic Are You Enjoying Right Now?
king ubu replied to Soulstation1's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
Have been lying in bed since Sunday, went - for the very first time - through discs 1 to 17 of the Ducal RCA box. Right now: the Bud Freeman sessions on Disc 4 of the Capitol Mosaic, before that the whole disc 1 of the same set. Will stay with it for a while listening to some select sessions, some still are new to me. ubu -
I thought this was some kind of poll... wouldn't have been sure if I'd voted for George W. the glorious crusader, or for ariceffron, future of US law

I have to agree on "Unit Structures" - it may indeed be THE BADDEST ever album Blue Note recorded! ubu

looking forward, thanks!

I planned to get everything ready last weekend, but I caught some flu again and am in bed with high fever since Saturday night, not having any of the BFT material with me... Sorry, can't step in earlier! ubu

As far as I know, Ortega is alive. I think so, too. Anyone has heard this disc? It's a quartet with g-b-d. ubu

David, thanks for the additional Leo recommendations! I saw the Gies, and the Fei, too, I think. The Bickerton and Maneri I got from John a few months back. Problem now is that I'm sick in bed with rather high fever and don't know when I can make it back to that store...

The group disc on Free America ("Donna Lee") is marvellous! I haven't yet been able to check out the solo set (which holds 2CDs, by the way). I tried my lousy reviewing skills on "Donna Lee" in the "funny rat". Should be on the second newest page now (page 100, if you use the 40 posts/page option). ubu

Thanks a lot David! Btw: the "Frontier" disc I listed above I got, mixed that up when browsing the Leo site. Will look for: - Karayorgis: Heart & Sack (& any other of his discs) - Moscow Composers Orchestra (all I can find, at least two I think) - Guyvoroska/Petrova (sounds interesting) - Collective 4tet - Trio Alliance and will get an earful of: - Bley/Maslak (very ugly cover, but Feigin seems to be rather good in designing those ugly covers...) - Maslak's "Mother Russia" if it's there - any Remote Viewers other than the one I have - Actis Dato (need to find out myself, but I had an earful and found it boring, will invest a bit more time) Thanks again everybody! ubu

Thanks for teh recommendations! I believe I saw otehr Karayorgis discs, but couldn't remember which ones when browsing the Leo site. Any other recommendations? Not sure about the Carlo Actis Dato, as I got an earful at the shop the day before yesterday, and wasn't really convince of it. ubu
