I wonder why they'd do this, brownie! Their earlier releases had lots of great alternates (think of the Wilen or the Brownie discs)!

Not a review, obviously, but I quite like the Rudd. It packs good energetic playing and fine solos, especially by Rudd - nice tunes too. I like the Rudd a lot, too! I think I posted a little write up (not a real review) in the "funny rat", you would certainly find it by looking for "Rudd" and me as member. ubu

it's a very nice date I find, with some repetitive, percussive "minimal" elements and Herbie in a particularly angular mood. I love "Inventions and Dimensions"! That was THE revelation when I got the Herbie box. The music has such a nice easy flow, it's very associative, very free (but never noisy). Killer cover, too, but for that one would have to buy the LP, I suppose... ubu

*IMPORTANT FOR THOSE WHO MAY OFFER HELP* - my BFT has two CDRs, the second disc is two seconds short of 80 minutes, so if you ever had problems burning long discs, consider that before you offer help!

Wrong, the Jazz in Paris - with one or two exceptions - had only sessions recorded in Paris. The London sessions of the Quintet of the Hot Club de France were not included in the various Djangos of the series. Disc 4 of the JSP volume 1 has the lot. 26 tracks, 75 minutes of it! They are also in one of the Fremeaux Django 2CD sets which supposedly have everything that Django ever recorded. Thanks brownie! Now is there any other way to get the music? Or is there more on the JSPs that is not part of the Mosaic or the Jazz in Paris discs?

Just for the record: a package of 2CDRs from Switzerland to the US, by air mail, costs around 3.5$ postage. So I'd be very happy if I'd find three or four persons willing to not only distribute but also make burns. A little reimbursement will of course be included (though I haven't decided what exactly...). quietist vinyl?

Got this one in a sale: And liked it pretty well. Nice to hear some Malachi Favors! Smith sounds a lot like Miles, but somehow he is pretty much his own man, his sound being somewhat clearer, and lacking the fingernails-on-blackboard-effect that some seem to hear in Miles' playing... >samples here< Also gave a listen to a couple of the Leos (I went back to that store and picked up another 12 of them, in addition to the four I mentioned getting two weeks ago): Giorgio Occhipinti's "Kaos Legend" needs a few more spins, it's pretty dense, three long tunes (an hour, all together) plus one very short to end the disc. Gianni Gebbia is on the first half, Eugenio Colombo on the second, Lauro Rosso (I always thought his last name was "Rossi"...) on trombone, and a few more of the Minafra/Instabile guys are present (though not Minafra himself). Then I gave a first listen to "Position/Dark/Red" by the Not Missing Drums Project. Pretty whack stuff, but good! Also gave a first concentrated listen to the Remote Viewers' disc I got from Chaney (one of the unloved babies), and liked it pretty well. Seems like I'll soon be heading to that sale once again picking up some more Remote Viewers, and needing to check out Gies (he's involved with Not Missing Drums Project) solo release on Leo. The discs I bought are by James Fei, Keshavan Maslak (the trio with Lindberg & Sunny Murray), Trio Alliance, Gies (the duos), Bechegas, Karayorgis (two of his trio's releases)... can't list them all going from memory, but I got most of what was recommended, so many thanks again! ubu

Short of getting the Mosaic box, you'ld be OK with the two other JSP Django Reinhardts 'The Classic Early Recordings, vol. 1' and 'Paris and London, 1937-1948, vol. 2'. Remastering on those was done by Ted Kendall who worked from good 78s sources. The two JSP boxes are more complete than the Mosaic which has the Swing and HMV sides only. The Decca sides are on the JSP boxes. I suppose the Deccas are on the Jazz in Paris discs, too, so if I have those (seven they are, some stuff from other labels than Decca is included, too, I believe), I won't need the JSPs, right? (I do have the Mosaic and love it.) ubu
