Hey Allen, how about adding Dewey Redman to your list?
-
Wait, I could sell my user-ID, complete with all posts included! How bout that? Let's have 5000$ for starting bid!
-
Uh, is this board for sale?
-
...he's (I'm posting in pieces, as I was advised to do) singing "Cottage for Sale".
-
yup. only here...

Sorry, I wasn't aware of any new posts in this thread... Nate, I don't really like the disc with Minton. I mean, he's most impressive and all, but it just doesn't fit the music, in my opinion. The new project is much, shall I say, simpler, more direct, closer to (if not just that) rock music. Also the absence of keys made the settings and arrangements more transparent, and Kim Clarke does not have the need to show off her skills. The question is whether or not you can take Stucki - on stage she's got a fascinating presence, contributing a lot, musically and show-wise. Now on disc I'm not sure how well she comes over. There will soon be an FM broadcast of parts of their concert at 2004's Leipziger Jazztage (Germany) and I'll definitely try and have a minidisc running then. Oh, and I'll soon post a new topic here, providing a link to last Sunday's Jimmy Smith memorial show I did. Soon, that is, as soon as the show is online. ubu

recently reissued, and a very nice one: (seems like the amazon.de images grew larger!) ubu

I read somewhere that Roach was pretty mad about Columbia replacing that great original photo by a nice portrait of his. ubu -
The mistery continues... I'll have to spin that disc again, too!

Interesting discussion here! I have two Murray discs (a Terrones one with Johnny Dyani and a japanese quartet standards disc, no idea what it's called) and I never felt like getting more, and I guess that has a lot to do with what several people here observed. There is much more facade than substance, it seems, and indeed, Allen's list is quite accurate! Luca: thanks a lot for sharing these wonderful photos! Seems like after Sangrey's post (and some other things I heard of recent Grimes) I'll be on the lookout for the Grimes Ayler CD, though! ubu

Finally began spinning the discs last night, did make it through 10 tunes so far, here's a few thoughts. As usual I never looked at this thread before, and as usual I'd done the listening away from my computer (no CD lists, no AMG, no google) and away from my collection... #1 - Bebop... is this the tune of the same title? Pretty nice vibe3s! Nice setting, too! No idea really, but I'll go with Bags... #2 - One of those Monk tunes I never remember the title of... performed by the highpriest himself, I assume. Love it! And I got a feeling this is on one of the many Monk discs lying around here (got the Riverside sans booklet in that ifamous zweitausendeins.de sale, also have the Columbia solo 2CD set). Can't pin it, don't have the discs here to compare. #3 - More Monk. Very nice! I guess Monk performed by trumpet/bass clarinet/drums & tap-dancer is rare enough that one of the skilled googlers has identified this already. Love it, terrific groove! #4 - More fancy rhythms... what are these tuned drums? Interesting, sure, but no idea once again. #5 - Nice sequencing here! Pretty nice tune! I don't dare to guess on the identity of the first tenor, neither of the second... love it a lot. Nothing earth-shaking or inventive, but solid good music. Could be Ammons-Stitt (I hardly know their output)? Nice drum-solo, too, that builds and nicely segues into the theme at the end. #6 - Another one I like. Fairly recent, I think? No idea... #7 - Again very nice sequencing here! I like this one a lot. The guitar at moments has a ring that almost makes it sound like a sitar. Clarinet is played lovely, very soft. #8 - Good opening. The guitar sounds a bit too soft for my likings, but the trumpet is very nice! Great drummer, too! Very nice to hear trumpet with just bass/drums. #9 - I like this one a lot! The tune sounds very familiar. Yet another great drummer! I suppose this is another fairly recent recording and again I have to admit: no idea. Guitarist sounds a bit like Mark Whitfield? (I only know that one disc he did with Christian McBride and Nicholas Payton) #10 - "African Flower" - what a beautiful composition! Great to hear some doorbellists on this disc! Some 70ies Gary Burton? Sam Brown? seems like I'll draw a blank so far... more to come, I won't read here before I finish listening to all of it! ubu

not exactly early Ella, but I *love* this one! "Whisper Not" is... oh, just wait for my BFT... ubu
-
Someone better get that McShann! A great disc at a more than fair prize! ubu
-
uh oh, I missed it

I'm sorry to say, but... no A few select member who got other stuff from me recently already got my discs. The US discs seem to drop in at the distributors' homes, so again: UP FOR MORE SUBSCRIPTIONS!!! ubu

Alles gute zum Geburtstag Mike! Wow, another year since your last birthday... (at least so it seems, unless you cheated like deus...) Wish you all the best! Flurin

Up for US subscribers!

Tony, please do post some about "Ear Mix"! P.L.M. is a just but hard judge, usually. I never noticed anything wrong about the covers, but I bought most of mine open (we're allowed to listen to discs in stores, they're not shrink-wrapped but have some re-usable plastic things wrapped around them to protect them).
-
Put me to no. 54, please! Now that most of the work on no. 24 is done I'm getting enthusiastic again
-
I only have "Mainly Mancini", a wonderful disc. Will definitely need to look for more some day!
-
Try "Machine Gun" next time

Here's the one I have: I found it ok, but not outstanding. Not sure how well John Scofield's urban guitar fits in... Look who produced this one! In addition to the one you have, David, there's this one that's also listed on the Enja Weber site: Any opinions? McBee & Richmond might be nice, but what about the Harlem Boys Choir? ubu
-
Hannibal is great! Would love to heare more of him! Same here - I guess his Enja stuff is all OOP, right? I have him on one track of the *great* Elvin Jones Enja that was done live at the Village Vanguard with Wilbur Little (?) and George Coleman, and on "Open Windows" or what's it called, the date he co-led with George Adams, a live recording made in a Zurich club, released on Enja as well.
-
Tony, I'm glad you like "Work"! I got that one probably soon after it came out, and it's a very dear favourite among the 20 or so Lacy releases that stack up in my place! I recommended it several times in several threads, I have no doubt about it *being* good (not just me liking it...) ubu
-
David, thanks for your Humair post! Appreciated! I guess I'll only get the disc with Eskelin in that case. As far as "Baby Boom" is concerned I'll stick to my live recording (which I don't know all that well yet, but it seemed good). Hey Tony/John:I have a spare copy of that live concert of that band, if you're interested! I'll send it to John, okay? Need to send him other stuff as well. I picked up a couple more Leos: Stefano Maltese Open Sound Ensemble - Living Alive! And from a fellow board member I picked up Billy Hart's "Enchance". Very good one! With Hannibal, Eddie Henderson, Oliver Lake, Dewey Redman, Don Pullen, Dave Holland or Buster Williams, and some percussionist. Not all musicians are present on all tracks, but most of them are on most of the tracks. Recommended if you can find it! It's a late 80ies A&M Digipack reissue, remastered by RVG. Here's a small cover shot: ubu
