Now playing: Gil Mellé: Tome VI Strange and beautiful music! The sidemen: Forrest Westbrook (p), Benfaral Matthews (b), Fred C. Stoffett (d) are all playing wierd electronic instruments, as does Mellé (who's sticking to soprano, otherwise). The sidemen are all unknown to me, anyone knows anything they did before or after this LP? And the album has a black label with silver-grey T (Verve V6-8744 Stereo). Assume it's original, too, but there's a hole through the cover, so it's a review copy, I guess). Rare one? Can't remember what I paid for it, but not more than for a full-priced CD, I think. ubu

That unfortunately happened pretty often with the Atlantic albums. Many of their masterings were not up to par with what was being produced at other labels (BN, Prestige, Contemporary among the non-majors)! My vinyl reissue sounded pretty awful. But the Collectables cd isn't that bright either. Presumably it's down to the source tape. Seems so, yes. Now spinning the mono "To Sweden with Love". Sounds a bit brighter, but not much. Both are very subdued albums. Jim Hall is sublime! The man was all over the place, in the fifties with Giuffre and Chico, then in the sixties with Hall and Rollins, wow!

The Farmer at Half Note, now on side 2. This doesn't sound that good. I assume it's not my LP (in ok-good shape, not perfect), but rather the original live recording. Just sounds flat... The music is very nice, though!

Nice piece. Some AMG research didn´t bring any answer. I will try it again tonight! AMG won't help you any... rather rely on your ears (I know they're wide open... from funny rats to Bix and back again...) Glad you're with me on the fun-side! Maybe others are, too, but don't find these tracks to be any fun... On #5: genuine Ellingtonia, yup! But then again, no use checking AMG...

Oh well, I'm sorry so many among you don't like the "imitators"... just let me stress again that #6 is no imitation of nothing, and not latest Duke, either. Also on #3 and #4: these are, in my humble opinion, just two pieces of good fun, not much more, but nothing less, either. Good fun sometimes is enough for my kind... #5: I just love the clarinet here, no matter how sloppy or bad the rest of it is. Thought these two minutes couldn't hurt too much, but... Then the tenors-segment is a whole other story... "Blood Count" and "Whisper Not" and "Body and Soul" are in my humble opinion three masterly performances, and while the middle one was correctly pinned, the others remain mysteries (and hopefully so till the end... ) I'm also very fond of the last Ellingtonian-track, "Ko-Ko"... I'd enjoy you trying to find out if there's one or two tinklers... there most certainly are no overdubs there. Can't say no more right now. On "Mood Indigo": I'm absolutely with Mike there (though not knowing Mangelsdorff nearly as well): I find this a stunning performance, with tons of musical humour (which is not working against the mood of the piece at all, in my opinion), and Elvin is terrific there, as only he could be.

My most recent experience (4-5 weeks back) was a very pleasant one (once more): finally listened to the Capitol set in its entirety (well, skipping the Williams & Carter which I've known for some time), I found out that one disc had a damage (looked like a pressing damage), I dropped a mail and a week later had the replacement! from me, as always. My last mails got replied, too, pretty fast. (I own some 35 sets, but I don't think I even mentioned that when writing to them, so I don't think they're service gets better or worse depending on how good a customer you are - unless they're keeping meticulous records and check there, first...) ubu

I sure love the music on it! Can't go wrong with Hawk and Eddie C.! It's a bit beat up, though. Got it in trade for a live tape I had done for the guy at that shop - he said I should choose any one item there... saw that and it was clear what to take! I have a very clean original vinyl of this and have loved it for many years, especially the unique version of Cherokee in which Hawk and the rhythm section are cooking in different tempos. Spinning this again and... it's almost perfectly clean! Wow! Memory sure played some tricks here! I thought it was all crackles and pops, but it sounds very very good! Love Hawk's sound! Must be some of the best late Hawk on this LP!

So, will my screen name be changed into b3-er? Hmmm, not sure... I think your guess on #6 is too far off. You won't, for this reason, be allowed to use the handle "EKE BBB" any longer. I say we shorten it to BBB, assuming you'd nail any tune from that composition correctly - if this is proven wrong, you'll be renamed... well, nothing would remain, nothing at all, then...

Welcome! I start liking this band! Initially (after having heard some portions of this very same project, on the weekend of Saalfelden '04) I posted some negative comments on the sloppiness of Byron's execution and weakness of his sound, but somehow the more I listen, the more I like...

Don't get me wrong - I love the playing of Jarrett with Miles, no matter if you (or rather he) calls it energy or music! I was completely stunned by the Isle of Wight set! A little epiphany, for me!
