  1. I didn't say utter crap. I said toilet reading. THAT is a big difference. At least to me. I know, I know... but paired with the couw-man's reponse it made the books look like utter crap. Not a biggie - the Braxton, however, looks like some thorough analysis is going on.
  2. Also I've read pretty bad things about french jazz "sous l'occupation" (same as in Switzerland: they didn't mean any harm, but they were total amateurs, lacking any deeper understanding, and probably more important: lacking the ability to swing...)
  3. Alright, above are the ones I'm still missing. I won't get the Roach (as I will have to get that Mosaic), the Young (as I have it as part of the Verve box) and the Ascenseur (as it missed the bonus tracks - I will have to replace my late eighties copy, though, with the new one). I don't know Bacsik at all, don't know if I need more than the one Crolla I have (the one dedicated to Django), and I'm also hesitant on the two Armstrongs, the two Petersons with Grappelli, and several of the old-school ones. Then, the chanteuses disc I never saw. Oh, and before I forget: main reason I'm picking these up again is because there's a nice sale going on in Zurich (the prize, though, is about as good as it would be from French Amazon including postage cost, so not such a great sale, but still I prefer picking them up in a store when I have the possibility and don't loose more money on it that I would, ordering on the net). What do you think? EKE, step in and tell me all those old-school ones are great... (hey, I do have the Willie "Lion" Smith, at least). ubu
  4. Got two batches of these, coming 13 closer to 101 The only ones I have in full listened to, so far are the Gus Viseur and Gérard Badini (indeed mighty fine Sam Woodyard there - mikeweil: you're reading this? Get it!). The Urtreger plays Powell served as background music last weekend, so I didn't get to really listen yet. the others I picked: - Jazz et cinéma vol. 4 - Modern Jazz à Saint-Germain-des-Prés - Danse à Saint-Germain-des-Prés - both Peiffers - Michel Legrand: Paris Jazz Piano - Grappelli: Django - Porgy & Bess (strange but good) - Rhoda Scott: at the olympia - Jack Dieval: Jazz aux Champs-Elysées So I'm needing some advice on the ones I haven't gotten yet... next post for that. ubu
  5. Don't know in which thread to post... in the other one someone said the zweit fellows had the box for 20 Euros, here it says 30. Whatever, they still have it for 30 and I just got it (together with three of those Oreos books - DizzySpells, if you're reading: the Braxton looks very good, no utter crap there, not coming from Peter Niklas Wilson! - and several 4 Euro OJCCDs).
  6. Not knowing how the original releases looked, I assume the CD slipcases represent the original front covers, yes? But the back is not what they looked like on the backside, originally? ubu

    Funny Rat

Finally had a first listen to my first Erst, "Time Travel". Like this a lot! Look forward to hearing "What A Wonderful World" soon. Of course I will have to listen to "Time Travel" again and again, as this kind of music I always have to grow to, and explore more and more...

    Bobo Stenson

I saw Stenson live once, in trio (Jormin-Hart, I think, but I'm not sure anymore). Great concert! As for recordings, I'm not much further than I was when we discussed the AotW linked above, meaning I still don't have any of his more recent ECMs. ubu
  9. Ordered that one... can't tell you right now, either, for the same reason. ubu
  10. brownie, I guess my partial quote above didn't help, sorry! I just wanted to ask if something got lost here:
  11. This one? Plaisir D´Amour I'm sorry, I can't tell, as long as I can't find out who's playing on #5 of that CD! Google didn't help me any further. What I can tell you is that even if it IS the same "WITTCL", I didn't take it from there.
  12. Hm, strange. Here's what I have: 1. A Train 2./3. unknown (too lazy to find out what these are) 4. St Louis Blues (Greenwood) 5. Bill Bailey (Greenwood) 6. Walkin' (or I'm Walkin') (Greenwood) 7. Medley: Do Nothin > Don't Get Around > Sentimental Mood > Beginning to see > Soph.Lady > Caravan > Solitude > Satin Doll > Squeeze Me > It Don't Mean a Thing > I Let a Song > Don't Get Around 8. Basin Street Blues 9. Happy Reunion 10. Diminuendo & Crescendo in Blue (inc) Pretty different. Could some of this come from February 19, 1962? From there I have 11. The Eighth Veil 12. Kinda Dukish/Rockin' in Rhythm At least that's what the announcer in 1999 said...
  13. I'll have to check, I don?have all of it, but certainly more than the video.
  14. October 9, 1959 Kongresshauss, Zurich (Switzerland) Clark Terry, Ray Nance, Quentin Jackson, Russell Procope, Duke Ellington, Jimmy Woode, James Johnson Of course, Ray Nance on vocals (shame on me!!!) Cheers, Agustín What's your source, Agu? Lord? It's correct, anyway! I am a very well informed guy! Is your source a video tape? No. The video was recently seeded over on easytree.org, but I didn't get it (it was labelled Germany, and maybe with a wrong year, too, and no personnel info etc). My source is a 1999 re-broadcast by swiss radio. I have more music than the video includes (assuming that thing on EZtree which was 40 or 45 minutes long is all there is on video). on Lewis, btw!
  15. October 9, 1959 Kongresshauss, Zurich (Switzerland) Clark Terry, Ray Nance, Quentin Jackson, Russell Procope, Duke Ellington, Jimmy Woode, James Johnson Of course, Ray Nance on vocals (shame on me!!!) Cheers, Agustín What's your source, Agu? Lord? It's correct, anyway!
  16. Coming close to the end of side two of "Blowin' in from Chicago". Almost forgot how great this one is, it's been so long! Blakey is terrific, too, in addition to the two tenors. I have a few of these Connoisseur vinyls and love them all (Cherry Symphony, Walter Davis, Ready for Freddie, Ornette Fox Hole, plus Curtis Amy's Katanga). ubu
  17. Sorry to hijack, too, but: no hurry, the discussion is, I would guess, about half-way, far from being through, already! So no need to hurry!
  18. Just got "Tjader plays Latin", love it! Welcome to the board, Rob!
  19. Going from memory (seems like I post too much to keep an overview...): #1: tune & tenor #2: tenor #3: tenor #4: tune & tenor #5: tune (& youknowwhatelse...) #6: tune #7: tune & Helen, NOT pianist, NOT drummer #8: tune & instrument #9: tune #10: tune (actually labelled differently, sort of stolen...) & pianist #11: nada #12: nada #13: nada #14: nada (xept the quote of a Schifrin tune, which, though, escapes me!) #15: nada #16: nada #17: tune #18: ducal musings hope I didn't forget anything! if so, reply to that post and I'll edit it or re-post! ubu
  20. Vinyl day today... spinning "Young at Heart" by Teddy Edwards & Maggie (Storyville). Nice one! Great to give all these LPs a spin again, I much too seldom play my LPs! ubu
  21. Time for BFT duties now ubu
  22. Dramatizing a bit, huh? See, that's not at all a bad start! No more from these two to be heard... And with: Swiss is not all that far off (see EKE's first post of this thread), though... Will be interesting to know, I guess, who these fellas are! The tune has been nailed above, btw, it's "Hush", by Donald Byrd. ubu loves Helen... As ubu knows he's not the only here loving Helen, he thought he'd share this ultra-rare tune... The pianist appears elsewhere, btw, in a not-so-well-loved performance (among you bft participators) as dis here... ? You'se a talkin' of Irene Schweizer, mister? ! Finally! Now who's the other two? Not half as obscure, as, say, the bad band on #2 or the accordionist Long OOP... don't have the album myself Oh, and before I forget, not Tchicai, though from the same continent (nationality-wise, I mean, this is a caucasian...) hear hear! Are you sure about the tune? I'll need to check back with the source, but it was not identified as a Schifrin tune. And glad you can enjoy it without knowing what's going on! You could/should/may know the tinkler. Ayler-wise I'd rather stick with the real Albert... did Frisell do any Ayler interpretations? ubu knows it all mission accomplished! (ubu patting himself on his shoulder...) Thanks to you for some interesting comments!
  23. Randy Weston: "Blue Moses" (CTI) not bad at all!
  24. more coming, thanks for posting, brownie!
