  1. Click that link at your own risk! I guess 'mericans need to be 21 to be allowed to view it... This discussion is creepifying me in a baddistic way, I have to admitize! I will go foutrifissimo now!
  2. Maybe they're naturalizised Frenchisties that needify to beatify re-frenchifisized?
  3. A few years ago I heard part of a solo piece by Bobby Few (didn't catch the title or album) that blew me away. I've been keeping my eyes peeled for more from him ever since. Apparently he didn't record much. But I'm sure there are plenty of folks hanging around here who can fill us in on what the best sources are for more from this guy. Bobby Few recommendations, please!!! I know I still owe you a short review of that Few solo disc I have, "Continental Jazz Express". However, after two listens, I cannot really say much about it - it failed to instantly grab me, but somehow I don't want to say anything bad about it, either...

This has been discussed before, and indeed brownie is right! The Revenant set is the way to get all of these historic and magnificient recordings!
  5. Big Christ Conner, uhm Christ Connor uhm... you know what I mean... fan here! I got her three Bethlehems and love them! The self-titled Atlantic is indeed recommended, too, it's just as good as the Bethlehems. With the Jazz Date/Chris Craft twofer, I've had a little bit of trouble, too, but still, there's some fine stuff to be found there. The Gershwin disc I still need to check out, though I have that Collectables release with "In Person" and a cheapo LP added that has some selected tunes from the Gershwin set, so I've had a taste of it... On Lee Wiley... guess I'll need to get that box brownie mentions! Will add it to the Fruscella box from those same crooks (or not crooks or whatever...)
  6. browsing around on the BN site (hasn't happened for two years, btw...), I found a very funny review here.
  7. Let's just hope anyone reads those posts there!
  8. Interesting point, Bev! I think this may have something to do with what one could call "mediterranean" jazz. Trovesi and Mirabassi and (to a lesser extent) Sclavis are all musicians that spill over with joy and exuberance, yet are able to play very lyrical, too. And indeed their music is beyond the American concept(s) of jazz, most of the time, rather taking to their European roots, adding folk influences and traditional European music to the mix. Often I find their music to be very interesting, and frankly I cannot think of an American clarinet player up in their league, these days (just don't come up with Don Byron now, please, willya!). These guys are creative and are technically brilliant, they are more than just (I don't mean that in a dismissive way, rather stilistically speaking) "jazz musicians" (maybe the German word "Musikant" would be more fitting than the word "Musiker" [which I suppose has the same meaning as "musician", though I'm not sure]). And it is worth noting that most of the younger European clarinet players are either Italian or French. There are others for sure, Tony Coe, or Michel Portal - to add another older man - who is Basque.
  9. brownie, how about the case won against the copy-controlled DVD of "Lost Highway" (or what film was it again?) in France? I though copy protection was illegal anyway, in France... let's hope this will have some positive consequences in other European countries! And let's hope EMI cuts those shitty discs! I can assure you that the only EMI disc I bought since they went cactus is "Dance of Death", and I got that from CDUniverse (who demand too much for too slow shipping, btw). I have simply stopped buying EMI discs, but I'm afraid I'm quite alone. However, as Zurich's only jazz fan and willing buyer of CDs, I guess the stores did still notice On the serious side: my EMI purchases went from prob. 50 discs to 0 [edit: annually, that is!] - and that only as a result of their copy-protected discs No RVG you could get as a CD here, no Conns... it sucks bigtime! And it *is* directed not against those that copy the music or download it illegally, but at those customers that actually bought the real thing. However, the problem here is that the fellows distributing/selling discs are too stupid to realize Lonehill or Freshsound are rip-offs. The prize for a Lonehill disc is the same as the prize for an OJC or BN (24 CHF, roughly 20$), and the prize for a Freshsound is the same as for full-prized Universal discs (33-36 CHF, roughly 25-30$). If the Lonehill releases were sold for what they're worth (a bit more than shit), I'd definitely go for them, though. Same for Freshshound. But with the current situation, I simply stopped checking in with BN at all, and have no idea what they release, and also stopped caring, alltogether.
  10. I'd add the two Verve (reissued as an ECM double) to that 'essential' list... Yes, and the live recordings recently reissued on HatOLOGY (Emphasis & Flight, now a 2CD set). Edit: and FREE FALL!!!

Marion Brown is the man! Check out his duos with Mal Waldron on Freelance (Songs of Love and Regret, second one I forgot what it is called) - here is Brown (and Wladrin) palying (with) tunes. ALl played very slow, in a mood is of reckless depression. Also, Brown's duo with GUnter Hampel - Reeds and Vibes (on Paul Bley's IAI) - this is more "free-jazz"-leaning music, but also really lyrical. Haven't heard his ESPs yet, and Three for Shepp (Impulse!) is actually the only Marion Brown I've heard I didn't like. Hope the man will go back to recording. Thanks for these recommendations, David! I got "Three for Shepp" and enjoyed it quite a bit so far! "Porto Novo" I have heard, too, and enjoyed it quite some!

Please post some, if you find time to listen to any of them! Sounds like I should contact that guy!
  13. I love this box! Was in my second order (the first was the Tristano/Konitz/Marsh, the second was this plus five more...)

Has everybody here seen this thread? Braxton 60th Birthday Celebration Could this be a nice "deal"? I mean I'm quite new to Braxton (got six or seven discs plus some live recordings) and I gather these Aristas are quite "talked-about", so... I wonder, could anyone post some impressions? I have, btw, just this weekend, started to read some of Peter Niklas Wilson's book on Braxton. It's not a learned and intellectual analysis of his music, but rather an introduction written by someone who got to know the man and his music personally. Not a book for the grown-ups, it seems, but it looks like it will be a good read for me!

ubu - Gush is the Swedish improvising trio, collective , of Sten Sandell on piano/voice/electronics, Raymond Strid on percussion, and Mats Gustafsson on reeds (not really Gustafsson's group but one put together on the suggestion of Frippe Nordstrom, I think, but anyway no big deal, that's how it's come to be known as due to Gustafsson's greater exposure, I guess). Glenn Miller Cafe is in Stockholm, Sweden. Yes, should have made that clear - so I'm tryingn to decide which of these, the festival or this gig (plus whoever is on on the nights surrounding the 8th of June). More expensive to travel to Stockholm but there I might just have a place to stay. So your choice is not only between places but also between bands... seems that Gush could be a bit of a more interesting (more hardcore?) outfit than The Thing (which, though, can pull that loose groove thing that I love a lot). So this sounds like I cannot skip the second night of Taktlos... how about Bergman? Ain't he a bore (or so I've read - probably in here - some time back)? Had a little private Marion Brown fest yesterday, listened to several boots in various line ups: two solo sets, a quartet with Brandon Ross, a sextet with two guitars and Jumma Santos - the guy who played with Jimi -, a free impro set with Wadada and Manfred Eicher plucking the bass, a short set of Karl Berger (with Becky Friend, and if memory is right, Alan Silva), and a fun short duo track with Gunter Hampel on bass clarinet. I have to say, I'm quite impressed! I have not heard much of his officially released albums, still need to get the ESPs, but wow! He has the ability to play simple and pure melody (a stunning 14 minute solo rendition of "Angel Eyes" that does not much more than embellish the melody, over and over) and then he can freak out, play all the typical free jazz saxophonics, blow and hoot like a madman, and within a second, he's made the transition back to pure melody and it *never* sounds forced! (This is something I often find difficult - if you play "tunes", how do you go back to the tune at the end of a solo that went all over the place? How do you enter "melodic" and straight playing again... Brown pulls that as natural as it gets!) John: thanks for the Rossbin heads-up! I hope the discs arrive soon (haven't gotten any mail, but as that has happened to others, too, it seems, there's no need to be afraid yet).

Maybe you want to ask David? I don't have any experience with Hotels in Zurich, none at all! And I can't offer you to stay at my (and my girlfriend's) place - no guest room here, sorry! Oh, and what is Gush? And do yo mean the "Miller's" or "Miller's Studio" (Mühle Tiefenbrunnen, Zürich)? No place called "Glenn Miller's" here, as far as I know!

Hi P.L.M.! Nice to see you making a little visit here! Taktlos is a great festival! It exists for quite a few years now (20, 25?) and for the last few years I tried to catch at least one night per festival. From this year's programme, it looks like I'll try Friday (Day & Taxi are good, but prob. a bit too mainstream-ish for Taktlos, but I can't wait to see Parkins/Mori!), on Saturday... I'd rather just see the Thing, or the Thing with McPhee, and not VDMK, but maybe it's worth a visit, still? How about Bergman? Never heard any of his music! Sunday then... again, not sure about Frith, but the Kahn project looks good again. Thanks for the Mulhouse link, will check it out!

And in case anybody's interested: this year's Taktlos festival moved a bit more towards summer, as the (much more commercially oriented and much larger budgeted) JazzNoJazz festival took place for the first time in spring, about the same time the Taktlos usually took place. To still attract those chosen few of the Zurich crowd interested in jazz, they moved it to June. Here's the programme:

I only hope they will deliver the discs in the end! David, did you order some, too? (PM coming on the BFT!)
  20. Dime is down now, too... U2 being the problem, this time! I wish they'd just let us quietly have our little jazz party over there and stop those moneymoneymoney bands... keep the seeds open, the tracker is still running!

Got a note stating they have delivery delays... I got the mail announcing the sale a quarter of an hour before putting in my order, so I hope they will deliver, in the end. The website mentions a same-day or next-day shipping policy, but my mail said shipping should be in week 19 (I think that's the current week, so...) I'll keep you posted!

(I assume not as Swiss postal services are pretty espensive, usually...) Here's the link: Discplus Hat-sale Go to the bottom of that page and select "alle 170" to get the full list displayed.
