  1. (1) It's problematic that he played it differently than the way it's usually played? I'm so glad Brötzelmeister never tackled that tune! It would be all over in those shopping malls, no escape! Brötzmann is the *worst* in easy listening smooth jazz! Proof!

  3. here's some of the swiss ones... ("in front of god, all men are equal, hiv-positive or not") Of course the church (national churches, that is, protestant and catholic) backed out, and the catholics were offended...
  4. Wasn't Bill Evans that junkie guy? Paul Desmond is not jazz. He's worse than Kenny G! donkey-ass moron (or how does that saying go?)
  5. Parts of Samuel P. Huntington's "Who Are We?" - some creepy shit... some good observations.. some paranoia... all put through a nationalist popularization and over-simplification programme...
  6. Not guilty! None of the above! Mine will be easy to spot if it ever makes it; it's signed 'Grumpy old moose' and rails against labeling something Coke Classic when it still contains corn syrup rather than sugar.... well, in that case have a coffeine (and cocaine) free diet coke on me: - Fat Free - Very Low Sodium - Zero Carbs And please be sure to submit a review! The world needs to know more about this!
  7. anyone seen Assi Dayan's great film "The 92 minutes of Mr. Baum"? The plot's quite simple: Mr. Baum is told, at the beginning of the film, that he has about 92 minutes to live. After 92 minutes, obviously, he dies... hilarious film that has a great humour and is sort of kafkaesk (remember Kafka used to laugh out loud when reading his texts...)
  8. so which one is yours, Mr. Moose? Ils sont fous, ces Américains!

I won't order anything else from discplus right now, but I saw those when browsing the sales list. ghnrtg, thanks for you offer on the Graewe! Do you want to give it another listen based on D.D.'s post? If not, I'd gladly accept your offer! I haven't got many Graewe recordings, so far, but what I've heard I liked quite a bit!

Capers & Quirks" are both not available (lame! they mail out a link for a special sale, I order within twenty minutes and they don't have the listed items... they never had them, in the first place, or they don't have them anymore, but didn't update their website before sending out the link for their sale...) Is "N.Y. Capers & Quirks" worth hunting down? How about "Ramifications"? I have the three first discs by the Eskelin/Parkins/Black trio and like them alright (though so far I have not been convinced fully).
  13. Gene Krupa, Charlie Ventura, Teddy Napoleon
  14. I have this one: And I assume that's the other here: Are they from the same date? I don't consider Ventura a very interesting player - he's playing a bit too much "for the crowd" and is not all that subtle... However, Bill Harris and Dave Tough are smokin' indeed! I think my want for Ventura is satisfied by this disc and the parts of the Mosaic (which, in part, are quite good - but just as with Bill Harris, I think Ventura is no match for Flip Phillips, really). I'll have to consider this second Highnote disc, though, on the strenghts of the first!
  15. Just in case the Bethlehems come not yet recommended muchly enough... this one here has no novelty stuff and is a plain killer: Look at the line-ups and tunes: Herbie Mann(fl,ts) Joe Puma(g) Ralph Sharon(p) Milt Hinton(b) Osie Johnson(ds) Chris Connor(vo) NYC / April, 1955 Blame It On My Youth, It's All Right With Me, Trouble Is A Man, All This And Heaven Too, All Dressed Up With A Broken Heart, Ridin' High Kai Winding, J.J.Johnson(tb) added. NYC / April, 1955 Someone To Watch Over Me, The Thrill Is Gone, I Concentrate On You, From This Moment On Can't be that bad...
  16. Click that link at your own risk! I guess 'mericans need to be 21 to be allowed to view it... This discussion is creepifying me in a baddistic way, I have to admitize! I will go foutrifissimo now!
  17. Maybe they're naturalizised Frenchisties that needify to beatify re-frenchifisized?
  18. A few years ago I heard part of a solo piece by Bobby Few (didn't catch the title or album) that blew me away. I've been keeping my eyes peeled for more from him ever since. Apparently he didn't record much. But I'm sure there are plenty of folks hanging around here who can fill us in on what the best sources are for more from this guy. Bobby Few recommendations, please!!! I know I still owe you a short review of that Few solo disc I have, "Continental Jazz Express". However, after two listens, I cannot really say much about it - it failed to instantly grab me, but somehow I don't want to say anything bad about it, either...

This has been discussed before, and indeed brownie is right! The Revenant set is the way to get all of these historic and magnificient recordings!
  20. Big Christ Conner, uhm Christ Connor uhm... you know what I mean... fan here! I got her three Bethlehems and love them! The self-titled Atlantic is indeed recommended, too, it's just as good as the Bethlehems. With the Jazz Date/Chris Craft twofer, I've had a little bit of trouble, too, but still, there's some fine stuff to be found there. The Gershwin disc I still need to check out, though I have that Collectables release with "In Person" and a cheapo LP added that has some selected tunes from the Gershwin set, so I've had a taste of it... On Lee Wiley... guess I'll need to get that box brownie mentions! Will add it to the Fruscella box from those same crooks (or not crooks or whatever...)
  21. browsing around on the BN site (hasn't happened for two years, btw...), I found a very funny review here.
  22. Let's just hope anyone reads those posts there!
  23. Interesting point, Bev! I think this may have something to do with what one could call "mediterranean" jazz. Trovesi and Mirabassi and (to a lesser extent) Sclavis are all musicians that spill over with joy and exuberance, yet are able to play very lyrical, too. And indeed their music is beyond the American concept(s) of jazz, most of the time, rather taking to their European roots, adding folk influences and traditional European music to the mix. Often I find their music to be very interesting, and frankly I cannot think of an American clarinet player up in their league, these days (just don't come up with Don Byron now, please, willya!). These guys are creative and are technically brilliant, they are more than just (I don't mean that in a dismissive way, rather stilistically speaking) "jazz musicians" (maybe the German word "Musikant" would be more fitting than the word "Musiker" [which I suppose has the same meaning as "musician", though I'm not sure]). And it is worth noting that most of the younger European clarinet players are either Italian or French. There are others for sure, Tony Coe, or Michel Portal - to add another older man - who is Basque.
  24. brownie, how about the case won against the copy-controlled DVD of "Lost Highway" (or what film was it again?) in France? I though copy protection was illegal anyway, in France... let's hope this will have some positive consequences in other European countries! And let's hope EMI cuts those shitty discs! I can assure you that the only EMI disc I bought since they went cactus is "Dance of Death", and I got that from CDUniverse (who demand too much for too slow shipping, btw). I have simply stopped buying EMI discs, but I'm afraid I'm quite alone. However, as Zurich's only jazz fan and willing buyer of CDs, I guess the stores did still notice On the serious side: my EMI purchases went from prob. 50 discs to 0 [edit: annually, that is!] - and that only as a result of their copy-protected discs No RVG you could get as a CD here, no Conns... it sucks bigtime! And it *is* directed not against those that copy the music or download it illegally, but at those customers that actually bought the real thing. However, the problem here is that the fellows distributing/selling discs are too stupid to realize Lonehill or Freshsound are rip-offs. The prize for a Lonehill disc is the same as the prize for an OJC or BN (24 CHF, roughly 20$), and the prize for a Freshsound is the same as for full-prized Universal discs (33-36 CHF, roughly 25-30$). If the Lonehill releases were sold for what they're worth (a bit more than shit), I'd definitely go for them, though. Same for Freshshound. But with the current situation, I simply stopped checking in with BN at all, and have no idea what they release, and also stopped caring, alltogether.
