  1. corrected the typo in the thread-title - sorry about that! recommended listening for those that never heard Lunceford:
  2. missed that! I could watch TCM, but they don't really show up in the printed tv guides or in newspapers, so...
  3. Sy Oliver (taken from here):
  4. I just realized there was not one thread dedicated to Jimmie Lunceford on this board! Time to do good for that! A kind board member has just sent me two volumes of the Lunceford Masters of Jazz series, 1939-1941 recordings, mostly for the Columbia years, with a few from the second Decca period at the end of the second of the discs. I have long loved the Luncefored band, have several compilations (both GRP discs with Decca material, the Frémeaux Quintessential 2CD set...) and a rather beat-up set of the French Columbia LP box. Lunceford featured a bunch of great artists, among them trumpet players Sy Oliver, Gerald Wilson, Snooky Young (great interview in the latest Downbeat!), Freddie Webster and Eddie Tompkins, trombonist Trummy Young, Willie Smith, alto sax, Joe Thomas, tenor, and not to forget: Jimmy Crawford, big band drummer supreme. The band was in the pocket, was hip enough to feature vocal trios and the like (comprised of instrumentalists like Young and Thomas, who were featured as vocalists on their own, too), and they were a huge success with the audiences. It seems though, that contrary to Ellington and Basie, Lunceford's orchestra has been largely forgotten now, and I don't think that is just in any way. I'd love to have a bit of discussion of the man's music, sidemen, recordings, etc. here! Here's a short biography: short biography And here are a couple of photos: The band, late thirties Willie Smith (with Juan Tizol - thanks EKE!) 9. I just had a closer look at the reply I got from PayPal - the reply included my (forwarded as attachement) original message, and this is what stood at the begin not of my message, but of the forwarded hoax message in the PayPal reply: The stars are mine - I don't know if that was all the sensitive content of the stuff above, if not tell me what else should not be put up here on the web. As I said, the @bluewin.ch address was not mine, but some other Flurin's - I can't see any info actually concerning my mail-address above. But the main question: does this above include what you call the "header" (and I mistook for "subject") of the mail? EDIT: saw my address, added some *** there, too
  10. uh man, somehow I just ended up with an order confirmation in my mailbox... I blame you, Mr. winder! If this is not to my or my credit card's liking, I will send you the bill ← ← Seriously, I have no idea how that could happen! I noticed a Mary Lou Williams CD was added to the order, too... I blame catesta for that one
  11. I sent it in and got a reply (pre-fab one, I assume). The header was "FW: [orig. header]" - hope that helped. ← nope. Here's an explanation of what Chris meant: http://cf.stanford.edu/doc/email/headers.php ← Uhm, this is getting complicated... I was just using the web-client anyway, no idea how to this stuff there. Next time I'll wait till I have the mail on my own computer and then I'll ask couw again to send me that link
  12. I sent it in and got a reply (pre-fab one, I assume). The header was "FW: [orig. header]" - hope that helped.
  13. uh man, somehow I just ended up with an order confirmation in my mailbox... I blame you, Mr. winder! If this is not to my or my credit card's liking, I will send you the bill
  14. Thanks Hans - will do so! Of course I never click any of these links... I get this sort of spam mails all the time, but never with regard to PayPal before. Couldn't quote your post, btw - I get error messages for every second of third click on the board
  15. Thanks Agustín! I guess nothing to be afraid of then, just the usual attempts to get the cc info...

    Funny Rat

Gave the Gräwe disc a listen, and I like it a lot! Thank you very much, Gokhan, for passing it on! Can't write much about it, will have to spin it again, but I think this is one that I *will* spin now and then!
  17. wtf are you doing with your cell phone in your underwear? compensating something?
  18. Got the second of these messages today: Of course I didn't click the link, and the email was not even addressed to me (other Flurin in the to-field, but same domain/mail-client, and my address probably hidden somewhere in the BCC... first mail had my address in the CC and the same other fellow in the TO). What to do? Just delete it (as I did with the first, two or three days ago)? Or is there any address at PayPal where to direct this stuff? My account, btw, is still working.
  19. Now about "The Cook..." - no chance I would have walked out of that one! Add Ferreris's "La grande bouffe" to your must-see list, please! Yesterday I saw "Berlin - Sinfonie einer Grossstadt" (the original film from the twenties), and some walked out, but my guess is they walked out rather becasue of the stoopid DJ doing electronics (instead of a piano player...) than because of the film itself.
  20. Hellyeah! ← You should browse through the thread - this is another one I already posted - I was sure the US boys wouldn't look for that one ← Well, you have to know that said thread is not one I can browse whenever I want and wherever I happen to be...
  21. If I would drag myself to see all the films you guys mention here, I suppose I'd have walked out of several dozens of them... I try to avoid films I would walk out, and usually pretty successful, too. The only thing I can remember almost walking out of was when I went to see some Austrian stuff, and before the main film they had some Nitsch shorties... pretty ugly sh*tte, I tellya!
  22. including some stoopid marimbas! >>found here<< Btw: the "not been cleaned" part can be heard, but it doesn't distract from the music much! Very enjoyable stuff!
