sad news indeed, though I don't know much of his work really ... but yes, "Tribal Ghost" is marvelous! will have to check my files, I have a quite wonderful recording with Tchicai and a third musician (Paolino Dalla Porta, I think) that is unreleased ... check my blog in a few days if you're curious

Ornette's Blindfold Test
king ubu replied to Larry Kart's topic in Jazz In Print - Periodicals, Books, Newspapers, etc...
So, "All Blues" would actually be "So What", right? Thanks for posting, very interesting read for sure! -
I read a couple of other obits, and none mentioned the label's future, which can mean anything, but I guess in nowadays world, when you don't have anyone passionate about the music, no news might not exactly be good news.

They have some fine new productions as well, of course - including some very good ones by the Vienna Art Orchestra, recent George Gruntz releases, but also productions by Americans of all ages, ranging from Louis Hayes and Buster Williams to Bubba Brooks (I don't have a single one of those yet alas, was it Dan Gould who once mentioned them favorably here, some years ago?) and Jerome Richardson. But the Swiss Radio Days Jazz Series to me is the main attraction - and it grew fast in the past five or so years, adding some very nice stuff with horrible covers, but ... I'm a big fan of the series!

Wouldn't know anything I'm afraid. But on the outside the label looks too large an undertaking for a one man show. But from all you find on the website, it WAS a one man show, so I do hope it will somehow go on!

I feel similar about those particular recordings, but the trio with Wendell Marshall and Kenny Clarke always did move me some, and Larry's post surely makes me want to check out some of their recordings again (not sure I've ever heard the actual trio album in question, I have definitely have some recordings either with them backing someone or with varying line-ups).

the tracks with Smith/Brown were on this disc (part of the "Verve Elite Edition"):
-
1-2: Shihab (17 min, 1971) 3-4: Farmer (15 min, 1977) 5-7: Jordan (23 min, 1970) Klaus Koenig (p) and Peter Frei (b) are on all tracks, drummers are Peter Schmidlin (1971 and 1977) and Alex Bally (1970). Some of the sessions have Pierre Favre, but Schmidlin (who has recently died and was the founder and boss of TCB records) was the longest standing drummer of "Jazz Live Trio".

from the recent sales-thread: knew it would happen eventually!! That's great news. Please let us know when anything concrete can be posted/shared. great news indeed - though I have to echo BBS there: owning the entire black digipack series, the box was not quite worth the money for me (but it's so nicely done, I still had to get it, the price was right, too). There's indeed plenty more (including some good blues albums as well, a jazzy one by Jimmy Witherspoon for instance that was part of one of Sony's other boxes) and I'd love to see some surprises!

Very sad news.

all that and more, sure ... but why did he not get a better piano? And where did they cast the hipsters behind RvG?

very sorry to hear this - r.i.p. David

Marion Brown's "Vista" is quite wonderful indeed! First spin yesterday. Also got Archie Shepp's terrific "The Magic of Ju-Ju", Pharoah Sanders' "Love in Us All" (not listened yet, but I've heard it), "Girl Talk" by Shirley Scott (new to me, not played yet) and some McFarland easy listening (his own "Point of Departure", Gabor Szabo's "Gypsy '66" and Zoot Sims' "The Waiting Game" - the latter I pretty much enjoyed, "Point" temains tame except for Willie Dennis, the Szabo, hmmm). Why do they come with different spines? Are these all straight re-pressings of older reissues, with only copyright/printed info updated?

I've started reading a few months back but got sidetracked - back at it now and indeed there's lots to learn and much to think about! As for the scholarly writing - it did come as a bit of a shock indeed, but then I'm quite used to reading scholarly texts (though not on jazz) and Tom's writing is very clear and to the point, after all.

more from today's haul:

solid blowing date with some fine Percy France on tenor - part of today's nice haul, been way too long that I did any digging for vinyl and had a great time ... more info and larger pic* on discogs: http://www.discogs.com/Oliver-Jackson-Presents-Le-Quartet/release/3108940 the LP is signed by Leonard Gaskin left of his pic, there's more writing on top next to Jackson's pic, but it looks more like a dedication or something in Gaskin's writing than like another signature ... can't really tell though.*) *) Thou taketh what the internet giveth (that is, if I'm allowed to coin a Sangrey )

Battle of Waterloo 18 June 1815-2015
king ubu replied to David Ayers's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
actually just today I caught news that they - finally! - found some stuff on the grounds where the mythical battle of Moorgarten might have taken place (if it took place at all) ... we've got some lovely jubilees to celebrate, including the Marignano disaster which led to French vassalage but is celebrated by the right as birth of neutrality ... but actually indeed, some or the other Saubannerzug might be a rather healthy development compared to today's official politics ... -

Abba did the soundtrack, right? And did the fighters look more like ISIS or like Mad Max or isn't there any difference anyway? -
Not really, at least not over here, though I gather many hate this series: but then, anyone should have "Beauty Is a Rare Thing" anyway, as it does contain several tracks not available elsewhere (first released in the box)

Charlie Parker - Bird in Time - faulty booklet
king ubu replied to king ubu's topic in Offering and Looking For...
Thanks for the feedback - it's definitely just a production/printing error that I'm speaking of ... will try and take a half decent pic in the next days. Anyway, thanks for the Losin links, l p, at least like that I can gather the missing bits of discographical info, didn't think of checking there yet! -
I recently bought this set: only to find the second booklet had a mis-print (one page isn't centered and cut off to the point that a total of four pages are unreadable). Can anyone help me out with scans? don't want to go through the hassle that returns with big evil A have become if I needn't ... and of course my email to ESP-Disk' was left unanswered.

Well, I just went through the moves, Paypal was pre-filled ... should I have changed the sum myself, even when it explicitly stated 0 for shipping? Weird, but I guess that was some kind of bug.
-
Okay, I was asked to send more for shipping ... and just did so, of course. Still weird, but main thing is getting those CDs!
-
How did you manage that - on the website it states free domestic shipping or a flat $10 international shipping for up to 3 items? I have found it more economical to order from Instant Jazz, no risk of customs charges then either. Just put the two discs into my basked, entered my address etc. etc. and checked out using Paypal. Ha ha, no, I entered "Switzerland" as country and filled all the detail correctly.
