  1. I don't think I took it too serious - I myself find the notion of one month per BFT helpful, but what I wanted to say is that a month, with all the burning and mailing considered, is not a long enough timeframe for everyone to do his BFT just as he likes. If someone goes for the sign-up early in "his" month, discussion will only start in the next month - that was the only thing I wanted to say, when I propoesed that timeframe above. For me, things have worked more than well like they went so far, but if a majority wants to set up this monthly scheme, I'd be all for it.
  2. Can't dubya send over some of those stealth birds to annihilate Lonehill? I would *so* love to get some Giuffre and Konitz on Mosaic, but this kind of cheapo release (that Swiss stores have the audacity to sell at full prizes, not nice prize, even if that would already be too much) is what will probably keep them from doing it... That 2CD set mentioned is indeed a terrific one! Get that instead!
  3. The only Les Paul I know is that JATP jam PDEE (--->hey, P.D.: where are you? You're being missed! Hope all's fine!<---) refers to. Where else to search for some good jazz guitar stuff? What about that Decca disc mentioned above?
  4. Shall your roast in hell for every cent you took away from the esteemed estate of edward ellington! Good deal! The 40 disc set, this is?

    Verve LPRs

This is a great little series! I have trouble keeping up! The only non mini-LP one I have so far is the Lateef, and I think there are still a few from the first few batches (soon to be OOP) that I need... Here's a list of threads discussing them: http://www.organissimo.org/forum/index.php...cs&highlite=lpr ubu
  6. this is my kind of thread! Hans, I know of course that google... that's why I added the smiley above!
  7. well, google has approx. 443000 hits for "fuschia", so it can't be quite *that* wrong
  8. John, let me be the first to tell you what a great disc you compiled! As I emailed you, I already recognized two cuts (one's da shit!, obviously, about the other one I'll keep my mouth shut). I also heard some long-haired Africans that think they are Europeans (but we *know* - ever heard of continental drift?) I'm looking forward a lot to the discussion here! This disc will be ample proof (if any is needed) that the "rat" is not just evil!
  9. Has anybody told you? You *are* old, definately! (Further proof: if you tell me I should spell it "definitely"...)
  10. duck! ← You know I often happen to have superfluous duck...uhm...tape... that should be able to keep your drive closed! I see another scary scenario: some BFT junkies going berserk all over the board if the sign-up thread does not start in time, making Hitler jokes that are *not* funny in the one remaining non-political part of the forum..., then, if the discs are not sent out at the right time, they pull some voodoo tricks, whille others just start getting nervous breakdowns and lose control over their actions and go pee-pee all over their Butch Warren CDs... finally, if the discs are not around by the first of the designated month... uh, I wouldn't want to be close to any of those victims of blindfoldtestalitis, no Sir! I will hide in a corner where no one will suspect me, and if anyone will try and get me, I'll have Pile and Cotice defending me, as well as - a last mean of defense, but a final one, I tellya! - the infamous paternoster-strike. Just wanted to post this to say to y'all: you've been warned!
  11. ← Thanks! Now that's something I need to find! I'm not sure about all those 'merican army music programmes, but I think Armed Forces Radio Service (that's at least what I think it was called) was different from V-Discs (V for Victory?)
  12. Milan, as far as I know, Lunceford was a reeds player, but he rarely played himself. There's a photo in one of the MoJ disc that shows him playing flute (though it's a posed one), and there's at least one cut so far that I've seen mention of a flute trio, one of the flutists then being Lunceford, since not all the other sax players doubled on flute (I'm not sure who the other two were, but probably one was Carruthers, so the third one should be Thomas or Smith, as I don't think Buckner is listed on flute anywhere, but I'm going from memory). kh1958: can you give a few more details about that recording? Is it an audience recording or an airshot? When exactly was it recorded?
  13. Not to spoil the party but: - when does sign-up start? (proposal first week of previous month) - when do discs have to be sent out? (proposal: plan in order that everybody has them by the first of the month) - when are answers revealed? (proposal: third week of the month) If we just say "one BFT per month" I got an itch it won't work any different from how it worked so far... one sends out his discs at the 20th of "his" month, the next one two days later.... If we just want to agree that the month sort of "belongs" to one particular BFT that would result in pretty little interest in the BFT sent out too late (just what we see happening to Rooster's now). If we all agree that this is ok, and it's the BFT starter's problem to avoid it, fine with me, but we ought to make mention of it, if we deal with these questions, at all.
  14. I started listening chronologically to the Lunceford sides I have, tonight. Meaing: first some cuts from the first Decca/GRP disc, then Masters of Jazz Vol. 2, then more from the Decca sampler, then the second Decca/GRP disc, then MoJ Vol. 5-8... got quite some to go yet, not even having listened MoJ 2 till the end yet... Here's some thoughts and impressions about the music I scribbled on a sheet of paper - don't know if there's any interest in this, but... "Rose Room": very nice and very warm clarinet playing by Willie Smith! He gets a soft and very nice sound! Then those Ellington covers: nice, but somewhat overloaded, no? Oliver growls pretty good on "Black and Tan Fantasy", though. And it's nice to hear a couple of Smith arrangements! (Did he stop arranging later?) Much of this early Lunceford has a nervous urban beat. Big to Jimmy Crawford for that! "Nana": sweet music, great arrangement, with Carruthers' barisax to the fore, and nice guitar, too (good remastering here!) "Miss Otis": wild Smith clarinet here, on top and in and out of the ensemble! He gets more quiet at the beginning of Oliver's vocal, but not for long... Good hot tenor solo by Thomas! Then dig Smith's sliding into "Stardust" (what a nice tune, what a pity it's almost been worn to death!). The busiest instrument here, for a change, is the piano, but it works very well. What a beautiful, mellow arrangement! I love the creamy opening with the piano improvising below the horns. What about the singing musicians? I can't say I like all the vocal tunes of Lunceford's, but they're much better than that Warren chap's features in that other band, no? Also, I think most of the singing musicians do their job just as good as the singers other band leaders hired. "Dream of You" - a little masterpiece! Oliver is soooooo laid-back here, and the tune swings sooooo good! Backing of the clarinets and the rhythm section is great. And for a change, the vocal is not pitched that high. I really like the singing on this cut. Bowles plays very fine here - he was not featured that often, was he? The next masterpiece follows, immediately: "Stomp it Off" by Sy Oliver - whoah! This one flows so effortlessly, so light! [Question: "Dream..." and "Stomp..." both run quite a bit shorter on the Decca disc than on the MoJ: 3:09 vs. 3:18 for "Dream..." and 3:04 vs. 3:15 for "Stomp..." - what's the reason? Does one version run too fast or too slow?] Several of these October and November, 1934 Oliver arrangements (as well as Wilcox' "Call it Anything") show the sax section at the their best, led by Willie Smith. Definitely good writing, and definitely superbly executed! Another Ellington tune, this time arranged by Sy Oliver, "Solitude", features a nice vocal by Wells, with lush accompaniment, featuring bassist Moses Allen on tuba, for a change. The reeds, led by Smith, are again great, and Stevenson is in a lyrical mood for once... more fine Bowles, too. [This cut - "Solitude" - again runs slower on the GRP disc: 3:03 vs. 3:11!] "Rain" again has strong Carruthers, and more lyrical trumpet, by Eddie Tompkins this time. More stupid vocal trio, but it works almost as good as on "Chillun Get Up!", and after the vocals, there's a nice Smith alto solo and some interesting writing to end. "Since My Best Gal..." is yet another great Oliver arrangement, with a very good tenor solo by Thomas, and good piano, too, before the vocal trio (Smith/Oliver/Tompkins) turns in a swinging performance. "Jealous" - last tune I listened so far - may be just another stupid little song, but that moment after the vocals, where the tension builds and builds, is terrific!
  15. Thanks Mr. never - just ordered! Added Vol. 3 of the Lunceford MoJ discs - not sure they'll be able to deliver that one, but if, it's cool, if not they still don't charge shipping, even if the total value then falls below 20 €. brownie: that 4 CDs is a special sale (buy 4 CDs for 20 €, but only crap on that list).
  16. Thanks brownie! Now I checked... 2001 want € 18.50 (don't need to check that), JPC is € 17, and Amazon (assuming I'll add something else) is € 15.50. Thus again, do you think the thing I linked to above is the right one? Date of release and title do match, at least, it's just the label that is a bit irritating!
  17. Happy huppy birthday, Ray!
  18. Look at couw's post above. Zweitausendeins has it for 9.99. ← Yeah, but they charge 8.50 € for shipping, no matter how many items I order. Amazon has free shipping to Switzerland with all orders from 20 € upwards, thus... I'll add another of the soon-to-be-OOP LPRs (or that hipnosis thing - paging couw!!!) and that's cheaper, than, all together.

When I saw Keith Rowe and Fennesz live last year the stage was quite dark, with only minimal lighting to allow each musician to see his instruments. The venue was intimate enough to allow us to see, fairly easily, what Rowe was doing to create the sounds emanating from his guitar. When Fennesz was using his laptop there was almost no movement from him. I'm not so interested in seeing what the performers are physically doing in a performance such as this. I prefer to lose myself in the total sound being created without worrying about who is doing what on stage. This is the opposite reaction than I have to a rock concert or traditional jazz concert. ← I know what you mean. When I saw that Supersilent set, it worked like this perfectly - maybe that has to do, in the end, with the perception of the music in the audience, and with the quality of the performance, itself? Something else: I found it pretty distracting that they played "tunes" of 4-8 minutes lenght, instead of more of a seguing thing. The applauding all the time, plus the usual chatter, did not help any in getting into a "flow".
  20. Is this the one? That's cheaper for me (if I add something else so I won't pay for shipping) than 2001: http://www.amazon.de/exec/obidos/ASIN/B000...9608497-6626424 Thanks! ubu
  21. Oh, "Fran Dance" it is! I told you, Rodney, it sounded so familiar! Almost like a folk song, in it's simplicity!
  22. I did a quick A/B to compare the Fresh Sound reissue with the Japanese BN volumes I had and the Fresh Sound is a bit better with wider dynamics. But the FS is marred by various tape distorsions that also affected the other reissues I heard (I have not heard the Mosaic Select). The Fresh Sound Omega is really for Art Pepper completists (I am one). It also has the full session (master takes, no alternates) on one CD, the excellent liner notes from Senor Pujol and a wonderful cover which is a reproduction of one of the Omega tapes box cover! ← Thanks, brownie! Next question: the US remasters from the late eighties: are they the same used for the contemporary Japan remasters, or not? Seems like - regardless of this last question - I'll rather pick up the Freshsound and keep the old US CDs than replacing those with the Select.

never very loud, but loud enough, and pretty quiet at moments. Could have been a little bit louder during the loud parts, but sound was pretty ok, all in all. I think the guy who did the mix may have been Martin Pearson (the fellow who does a lot of Swiss Radio broadcasts - among them the Taylor Willisau set released on Intakt -, and did the last few Jarrett discs for ECM, too). When I saw Supersilent at this same festival, several years ago, it got almost painfully loud towards the end - I was happier with it not being *that* loud, for sure!
  24. I would be happy if a 60 cent stamp would do it! I spent probably 20 or 25$ to spread my BFT (it would not have been any cheaper, I think, had it been one disc). Also I don't think this depends on the number of discs... it depends on the state of mind the BFT originator deals with, considering the number of discs. I think I pulled mine as smoothly as the 1-disc BFTs went, no? And believe, me, I had lots of things running at the same time, too, that kind of life that hits, now and then, if Swallow is to be believed (but being Carla's "steady-gig" I am inclined to believe him).
