  1. He's also on the wonderful 'Cleopatra's Needle' by Ronnie Ross (Fontana), rare late 60s session way overdue for CD issue. ← Hey wait, that one is on CD, isn't it? Great one, and indeed Ellefson is good on it!

    Favorite "Comper"?

Check Lee Konitz on the complete 3CD release of "Motion"! Big fan of Lewis here! I often shy away of mentioning names again that have been mentioned already...

← That was the funniest part indeed! David, great story! I'd be in for some Yaremtchuk discs, too! Just buy me any, and I'll send some money, then!
  4. Schwaller is swiss, but equally based in Munich and (now again) in Switzerland. He has several discs out on Joe Haider's JHM label: http://www.jhmrecords.ch/en/catalog/index2.php I have the Nonet release "The Original Tunes" (and included a cut from a nonet live date on my BFT), and also the quartet disc "Some Changes in Life" which features Jimmy Cobb on drums. Two very fine discs! There is another quartet disc out, that I haven't heard, "Welcome Back from Outer Space", that has Mario Gonzi on drums, and the same pianist and bassist, Thomas Stabenow and Oliver Kent, respectively. The "Three Generations" was out of stock when I ordered some JHM discs last time, and I haven't come around getting it yet. Listen to Love Someone You Like Some Changes In Live: Welcome Back from Outer Space: Schwaller also leads his own bi-annual festival, "Generations," in his hometown, Frauenfeld. The festival includes workshops for young musicians, who can study with some seasoned pros, who again will perform (rehearsed!) as the "Generations Masters Band" (2002 included Brad Leali, Don Friedman, Adam Nussbaum, George Mraz...). Also every edition features a festival big band, including the "Masters" again, plus otehr musicians (2000 had Bill Holman leading, 2002 Matthias Rüegg, 2004 Ed Partyka). Here's the website: http://www.generations.ch/ Also you may be aware that Schwaller was a longtime member of Matthias Rüegg's Vienna Art Orchestra, and can be heard, for instance, on their great (but OOP) hatOLOGY disc "The Minimalism or Erik Satie" (the hatOLOGY was a reissue of earlier issues, btw). That's about what I know. Like him a lot! Oh, and I wouldn't call him a "swing stylist" - he's thoroughly modern, although quite in the mainstream (he wasn't on those VAO records).
  5. I paid 50€ for a copy a year or two ago, when I saw a copy here, haven't regretted any cent. A great box, with very good annotation, too.

Edition is too grand of a word - these are pirated copies, of course. Ehen you get to it, let us know what you think. Ubu, you are actually more versed in Tri O music than you might think - you have this Secret Doctrine disc by Letov / Parfenov duo, which is 2/3 of Tri O... ← I do realize both things (didn't want to offend the board's Russian mafia by calling it anything less than an "edition", and am aware of the Letov thing). That Letov/Parfenov is great! I also have "Italian Love Affair" on Leo - another that's still on the pile that needs to be listened... Also got this one: And also need to listen...
  8. Could quality be a factor here? I mean, if you see some Fred Astaire flicks, they are just so good, on every level (music, dancing, photography...) - you don't find that very often in today's popular mass entertaining media world, do you? Not that I want to be a revisionist, there certainly is quality entertainment around today, and there certainly was a lot of meaningless crap being done back in those days, but I think there may have been some sort of a change.

What is it called? Is it good? ← Well, it's lyrical. It's good, but doesn't represent Alexandrov's thing as I know it from hearing him live. The CD is called Brink Man Ship, FMR 53: http://www.brennan.ch/discography/d_nisajo.htm ← Somehow I though you were tallking of Patrick Brennan (http://www.brickhaus.com/deepdish/home.html). But this is John Wolf Brennan, who I don't really like - exactly for excessive, even cheesy lyricism. ← To bring things back into perspective: living in Switzerland you ought to like cheesy stuff! No matter if the Russian mafia took over "funny rat"! Welcome, sahsa! Btw: someone recently set me up with a burn of Sainkho's "Letters", though a Polish (or Russian?) edition, not the Leo disc. Haven't come around listening to it yet, though.

    Favorite "Comper"?

Of course many have been mentioned... but let me throw in two new ones: Freddie Green Al Haig Then my own favourites include: Clark, Kelly, Monk, Duke, Basie. I find it hard to look at Cecil's accompanying as "comping", though it derives from just that word... still... of course I love Cecil!
  12. What's a "repoire", dear Sir? The only word coming close I know of is "repair"... ah, those intallactuaal taaxans!
  13. I was afraid already Sidewinder wanted to steal this one from my credit card, too! But then I forgot friend 'Sidney' is one of those vinyl-snobs... anyway, I won't talk to those MOR fans anymore!
  14. I assume Mike is aware by now that his chances are intact only in his dreams, so go ahead and delete this whenever you want.
  15. Passed one of the shops with those fatal summer sales... bought, for ca. 60 €, all new: - Craig Taborn: Junk Magic - Eric Kloss: First Class! - Joe Lovano: I'm all for you (copycrap) - Bu: Like Someone in Love (copycrap RVG) - Aki Takase: plays Fats Waller - Lee Konitz: More Live-Lee - Stanko: Suspended Night - Anders Jormin: In winds, in light - Abercrombie: Class Trip - Crispell Trio: Storyteller
  16. My credit card will hammer on my head to play the set for it, so it won't take three months! Also, I have a trick: I'll spin the Conn right now, thus your chances are: nil, zilch, zero!
  17. If you need both thumbs simultaneously to burn a cd-r you're out, if not, you're in! ****Folks! Drop me a PM if you want to be in! I'll wait for some days and then send out some info to everybody!*****
  18. Austrian radio that is. Bennie played piano, bass clarinet, soprano, and tenor on that gig, backed by two able austrian rhythm players (or was one of them German?). We could vine this one here, if there's interest - what do you mean? ← Count me in! ← No others interested?
  19. Happy birthday, Late!
  20. An email from Paypal just told me that my credit card got hold of this set! It said to my mantra-repeating self: go foutre in the air, and sent the money
  21. Thanks for thinking of me... I want it, but no, I have a strong will, I have a strong will not to buy even more, I have a strong will not to buy even more music that will stay on the shelf for a year without being listened to... (continue, mantra-like)
  22. I have heard Garcia-Fons, but the instrument in question does not sound like a bowed double bass ..... did you check the liner? I will order this anyway ... ← Yup, no Minafra, Favre and Bsiri on that cut! ← Also, if that adds any: I immediately recognized his fumbling madness when listening to the disc - I never saw him live, but have two of his "Oriental Bass" gigs (Willisau and Zurich/jazznojazz, from 2001 and 2000, respectively), that studio disc, plus the trio set I mentioned before, and it was clear that it was him. Of course he also appears on the Trovesi Midsummernight's Dream disc (that I love a lot) - for those live gigs he was mostly replaced by Giovanni Maier, but he made the "Jazz'n'more" in Munich, in June 2000.
