Well, Jeremiah has finally beaten Jeremy by now! The names I was making fun of above are ones such as "Charity" (c'mon!!!), "Serenity" (well yes, sure...), "Faith" (sure, sure), "Hope" (well, why not... even if the world should have ended in the year 1000...). "Grace" is interesting. Very popular early, then dropping down quite some, and getting very popular again nowadays... sure sure, I believe in the flying spaghetti monster, too! Mary, on the contrary (shoot them catholics!) was #1 until the 50s, #2 in the 60s, but then dropped to #15 in the 70s and then to #63 today... Samson and Delilah are gaining prominence, too

Not Lonson, but Lon was #318 in the 1890s, dropped to #845 in the 1920s and peaked again in the 40s at #522, in the 70s it's #918 and then disappears. Edit: Lonnie did better, all round, and only disappeared after the 90s...

I also like the rise of current #53, #13, #181. I really wonder how long it will take for 1910's #920 to raise to prominence again! Oh, and today's #191 is cool too!

I enjoyed "Alfie" a whole lot, I have to say! Caine's just terrific in it!

Great acting by Deneuve in that film! One of her most impressive roles, in my opinion! And the soundtrack fits in perfectly well! But then, speaking Polanski soundtracks, his yurpean films with music by Komeda are still his best ones, from the early shorts to "Knife in the Water" - dig Ballad for Bernt! - and "Cul de sac"... great ones! I just caught "Alfie", starring Michael Caine, with a very nice soundtrack courtesy of Sonny Rollins. Another perfect match, I shall say!

it should be part of that 5CD box called Jazz in Belgium. I nearly grabbed it at St. Lazare Fnac recently but put it back on the shelf. Its priced ca. 40€ HERE Cheers, Tjobbe I know this was discussed, but being at work.... besides the Django, is the stuff in that set part of other single JiP discs, or is that a set to go for?

And the movie you chose as your signature pic (Solaris) is one of my favourites, together with Tarkovski's best (IMHO) movie "Stalker". http://www.sensesofcinema.com/contents/dir.../tarkovsky.html I think I agree on "Stalker" - liked "Serkalo" without really understanding it, and liked "Andrej Rubilow" and "Ivan's Childhood" a lot, too, but both are different (the later one almost "normal", the former kind of a "genre" film, but of course going beyond the scope of any actual genre...). Have seen "Stalker" three or rather even four times over the last few years, and will not see it for several years now - fearing it may bore me...

These two sets are listed for less than 12€ on French Amazon! Quite a steal! I'll give this a try - they still are listed with only today as release date and it says delivery before x-mas is not possible... that should probably change as soon as they're actually out? Added that Django one that came late... that one, too, is listed as 2-3 weeks delivery... is it gone already? Is that one so rare? Sold that badly?

Can't add a lot, I own some 5 or 6 Bley albums, plus some of the Giuffre stuff (those are all worth getting!), but I want to add another recommendation for "Homage to Carla"! Love that one!

Now that one is even easier! Just pronounce it as it's written (it's Adelhard, btw, no?) Roidinger: "oi" as in "Oi!" (as I said: just like it's spelled...), "d" as in "dance", "inger" (see Eckinger above) Adelhard: "Adel": "A" as in "bar" (well, more or less... just not making it sound almost like an "o"), "d" as above, "el" as in "electric". "hard": almost as you'd say it, but with a shorter "a" (as in uhm "Berkeley"? crazy, them english talkin' people! Just can't spell in a sensible way!), and with the "r" more pronounced than you english talkin' fellow are used to. Final "d" is harder than the one in "Roidinger", and it's voiceless (but it's not exaclty a "t"). You can also ask the man himself... And you can also choose simpler names to ask me to explain (me? what me? I haven't done anything!) Now that may be the correct English (and German) pronounciation, but it's certainly not French!

Easy one for me Isla: "I" is as the "ee" in "eel" (only not necessarily that long). "a" is a the final "a" in "paranoia". Eckinger: "E" as in "Ella". "ck" is just "k". "inger": think "[g]inger" but with a "g" as in "go" instead of as in "ginger". And the final "er" is more or less pronounced, but that "e" is not the same as in "Ella", of course, nor is it the same as in "eel"... rather it's like the first "e" in "there", but shorter (which again makes the "er" or "Eckinger" sound different from the "er" in "shorter"). Understood?

Yes, we much prefer tunes like 'So What' or 'A Love Supreme' I'll catch Michael Moore's "Jewels and Binocchulars" tonight... seems to be a great project (all Bob Dylan tunes, played by as/cl-b-d trio, for those who would not have gotten the link to this topic).

True. I've heard Jamal's trio with George Coleman doing it a few years ago. As for Monk: maybe you got to open your horizon a bit? There's that marvellous band from Berlin, "Die Enttäuschung", with lead players Axel Dörner (trumpet) and Rudi Mahall (best thing to happen to the bass clarinet since the death of Eric D.). They do *all* Monk tunes, and they do them from memory, each and every feghing tune, including the complex ones, including a few stoopid ones that I haven't heard before, including the well-known ones (but those often wiht some kind of special twist). They are simply doing a marvellous job. Not sure though if hooking up with Alex Schlippenbach was such a smart idea. He was pale by comparison wiht the other band members, and he was playing much too nice-sounding stuff to fit into Monk's tunes AND the sound of the other musicians. Anyway, Dörner and Mahall are *most* impressive, I tell you! And their arrangements are great, full of ideas and funny twists. On a side-note, Ben Riley is doing another, very different, but also nice, Monk project, with no piano this time, but some guitar player (Freddie Bryant) and arrangements by Don Sickler. One of the sax players there is Wayne Escofferey, who indeed belongs into the other thread about best active tenor players on the scene...

David, I can't help with the Parker, there was only the one copy I saw and got myself. As for Michael Moore: "Jewels and Binocchulars" will play here tomorrow night (with Lindsey Horner & Michael Vatcher, I think) and I'll try to go. I saw Moore with the ICP on Friday and that was one hell of a great (and fun!) show! I'll try to do a little write-up on what I heard at this year's unerhoert (www.unerhoert.ch) later today or tomorrow. I'm quite a fan of Moore's, ever since I first heard him on Clusone 3 recordings.
