  1. Seems you're right... I tried all the larger international press/newspaper shops in Zurich mainstation... only chance might be a music shop, but I doubt I'll find it. Is it coming out monthly, so a 7 issue subscription would be for only half a year?
  2. Happy birthday, Chris!

Yeah, but are the remasterings different or not? I wonder, since Black Lion CDs are often not exactly state of the art, while 1201 CDs say "24 bit remastered". I'll have to get both Cecils, don't have "Silent Tongue" yet, either. I played some ratty discs again of late and enjoyed them a lot: Billy Hart - Enchance (A&M) Marion Brown Quartet (new ESP reissue) Marion Brown - Why Not (ESP/Abraxas, italian release) Hemingway/Graewe/Reijseger - The View from Points West and the magnificient Jimmy Lyons box, all through, after getting those mails from Ayler records like 10 times or so (I seem to get all their mailings at least twice... same for Atavistic, and I have not signed up with two addresses).

I think DA Musik is the owner of the Black Lion/Freedom catalogue... I haven't seen any other than 1201 editions of "Silent Tongues", David, I think these are the same ones being sold here. There's also a cheapo label that's part of DA, too, that one's called Jazz Colours, I think. Has anyone here had a chance to compare some Black Lion CDs to 1201 CDs? I have only had either or, never had both editions of the same title - I wonder if there's any noticeable differene. (I have two of the Monk in London and some Dexter as Black Lion that I am aware has by now been reissued on 1201 again.)
  5. I like 'em too ! horny what? I hope I'll like them, but looking at the pile of unheard stuff and taking into account what I ought to do besides hanging at the computer and playing tunes, I guess it'll take a few months till I make it through that set...
  6. I'd like to see an issue or two before jumping ahead and get a subscription... I have too many things I cannot keep up with reading (some daily and weekly newspapers, Wire, the one swiss jazz magazine in existence... plus all the stuff I need to read for university).
  7. go there and download the client http://www.bittorrent.com/download.html do some reading... you'll need to register on dad, too - sometimes that's not possible (maximum of 100'000 members, I think), but with a bit of patience it should work. and don't forget to read at least some of the faq once you're getting started (share ratio and some other important stuff that's good to know is explained in the faq's)
  8. I've been looking for Songlines to no avail so far... doesn't seem to be a rag generally carried by newspaper shoppes up here in the remote areas of the alps...
  9. I thought he got re-channelled into some texan BB honcho
  10. Wow, I guess it's time I dig up that Urtreger Quintet show and finally give it a spin! Quite a surprise, Tom! Also the Shirley/Fathead - still somewhere on my HD, unplayed... The Norman Simmons must be the surprise for me here, and the Tete/Hutch the embarassment... Thanks again for these two very nice discs!
  11. Wow that was John Taylor and Joey Baron!? Great! I have a soft spot for the accordion, and I have heard some live broadcasts of the Ballamy (not Bellamy!) & Carstensen duo... Farmer's Market is ok (I heard portions of their Berlin Jazzdays concert on the radio), but not really that great. Too patch-y and ecclectic, I think.
  12. Same here... from a bit of a distance, I think the show I saw wasn't all that bad (had the wrong colleagues with me, who just didn't dig it at all, and that may have put me down a bit). But I, too, found Wasilewski *very* impressive. While I don't have "Lontano", don't expect it to be as "raw" and "lively" as the live gig. It won't be close to... same applies to "The Trio" disc on ECM (by the trio, without Stanko) - it's all pretty much ECM stuff, if you like that you'll like the discs, but it's *very* much different from the live experience, and it definitely can't beat the live experience, in my opinion.
  13. Good Life Words by Jack Reardon and Music by Sascha Distel Oh, the good life, full of fun seems to be the ideal Mm, the good life lets you hide all the sadness you feel You won't really fall in love for you can't take the chance So please be honest with yourself, don't try to fake romance It's the good life to be free and explore the unknown Like the heartaches when you learn you must face them alone Please remember I still want you, and in case you wonder why Well, just wake up, kiss the good life goodbye Not sure this is the whole text, but it's the best I could find. Y'all are familiar with this tunes, since it's included on this perennial favourite:
  14. Slime-y guy, huh? I like this one here a lot: Distel, René Thomas & Jimmy Gourley with their hero, Jimmy Raney:
  15. All the best, and many happy returns!
  16. Would that be Sacha Distel? bingo! find the prize below
  17. he was a yurpeen... bred "sous le ciel de..." and turned his back onto the stuff not discussed in the misc.music forum to develop a successful career as...
  18. oh, I thought you were talking of the guy about whom President Chirac said "with his melodies full of happiness and optimism, [...] lit up the lives of millions of French people." a little sunday morning quiz? (brownie is not allowed in here!)
  19. might be a good start for someone inclined to get into earlier music... Perotin, sure! Machaut also (or did I mention him already?) - I am merely scratching the surface of this kind of music (or rather: these kinds...), but each time I play some it again, I am very fascinated and feel like I should get into it more thoroughly, so please prof. clem, give some good recommendations!
  20. Oh, and I have a live recording of the Zimmermann thing somewhere, need to dig it up again, it seems...
  21. Oh sure, clem! Dufay, Ockeghem, Orlando di Lasso... also Palestrina, plenty of fascinating music around there! And probably one of the rather few instances where "ECM sound" is a plus, if it's the Hilliards doing some of this stuff... their Machaut disc is fine, too! I think I should some day also read some about these chaps and their times... have read some about the renaissance in general, and in one of Peter Burke's books, Dufay plays a minor role. Pretty interesting, these earliest "geniuses" and what (and how) they achieved (what they did) between patrons and their own wants... (that last point is equally valid for all the great painters, of course).
  22. 'The Psychedelic Sounds of Marion Brown'... would have been a great title for the music on that album (w/the A. Shorter tune, mind me!), but with the b/w minimalist cover, the minimalist title it got is perfect! Interesting about "Why Not" - so the source of the confusion is Stollman himself, not just those who did the later reissues, it seems! Chaos from day one...
  23. Oh, but the cover for "Why Not" beats them all! That one I really love! Would be great to have the LP and put it on a wall! Thanks for all the information, brownie! I guess it must have been awesome in and around Paris in 1968/70 when all those free jazz giants where there!
