  1. oh yeah, the holy basie crap... good to see you back in action, Volkher!
  2. I'll look for the Black Lion then, thanks Chuck & Mike! The Hall (yup, two "l") Overton and Monk sides are the big band At Town Hall (Riverside) and Big Band & Quartet in Concert (Columbia - the last one next to the flawed one with Nelson that still awaits a new/good reissue on CD).
  3. Oh yes, a great one! I found a new copy of it a year or so ago in a local store... my Hines collection is still non-existing (this one plus the two Jazz in Paris discs, the second of which is pretty mediocre), but with Eldridge and Hawkins aboard, there was no need for hesitation! Here's the cover of the 2CD release: brownie, has that Xanadu been on CD (Prevue it would have been, I assume)?
  4. Mike, I think I agree about Marrakech, that's one of the best, indeed! Will have to look for the Enja, then! Is there anything else on Freedom other than the one recording in Zurich ("Blues for Africa")? I never got hold of that other Black Lion/DA Music album, "Berkshire Blues", how's that one?
  5. I don't think it's among Weston's strongest, but that doesn't mean it's bad... his 90s Verve recordings are such a great bunch! Main problem wiht Spirits is its length, I think - it's just a bit too much. On the other hand, the band comprises Idrees Sulieman, Benny Powell, Billy Harper, Alex Blake, Jamil Nasser, Idris Muhammad and others, as well as guest spots by Dizzy Gillespie, Dewey Redman, and Pharoah Sanders, so in the end for me it would be too good a thing to miss!
  6. Thank you so much! I've been away from the board for a while due to work obligations and a death in the family. Oh, sorry to hear that. Glad you saw the scans!
  7. Guy, don't take this as a personal attack... it was just that your post did fit so nicely with my point...
  8. Am I missing some kind of irony here? It's still easily available from Warner - since 1988... OOP in the US. Guy What kind of a business plan can Mosaic have for this? It's nuts. You can get it from Amazon.co.uk new for £4.97 about $10 plus post. http://www.amazon.co.uk/Zawinul-Joe/dp/B00...5279&sr=8-5 Mosaic of all companies realises that it's in an international market? MG see below... Am I missing some kind of irony here? It's still easily available from Warner - since 1988... OOP in the US. Guy merikins expect us to buy everything from the US but don't look no further to get "Zawinul"... their loss, I say!
  9. I do see the point about the euro labels making it difficult for such projects to see the light, but this is your feghing cultural heritage! There needs to be some way... on the other hand, if even the people in charge of stocking up local stores are totally clueless about this issue, I don't really see a solution. The Bird/Diz Town Hall thing is a case in point, in local stores... at the moment, the one I go to most frequently has both the Uptown version, as well as two cheapo euroversions, one of them with liners describing the sensational finding... ha ha. And then they don't have no releases at all by important artists, yet they carry multiple euroversions of this...
  10. oh man, I just got weak and ordered if from Amazon France for 43 eurozlotys (that is 46 minus VAT plus 5 for shipping). Not bad since I only have the Fargo (I did get the Carnegie sets from Fantasy in the zweitausendeins Fantasy sale, but never got the Storyville one to complete the run).
  11. Am I missing some kind of irony here? It's still easily available from Warner - since 1988... and it's a stone classic, including its cover:
  12. I recently found "Buzz" in the sales bins, and it's pretty good: Hell, anything I've heard with Michael Blake has been fine at least!
  13. http://www.cduniverse.com/sresult.asp?HT_S...;cart=499854558
  14. Happy Birthday, Paul! I wish you all the best with your new job and new life! And let me use the occasion to once again tell you how much I enjoy your CD!
  15. Unless they're the super saver jewel case titles, but I don't know if there exist more of those than the five I mentioned... do you know, Lon? Or anyone else? (In fact I don't even know if all five of those exist, the Hank Jones and the Dixon/Shepp are the only ones I saw and I quickly bought both of them!)
  16. if you want to hear Mangelsdorff's band *really* tearing it up, in a live-recorded, free flow set, get this one: enja CD 2006-2 Albert Mangelsdorff tb Heinz Sauer ts Günther Lenz b Ralf Hübner dr titles: 1 Swing & Swing 2 Open Space 3 Mahüsale 4 Triple Trip Producer: Horst Weber originally produced for three blind mice in Tokyo Supervisor: Takeshi 'Tee' Fujii Engineer: Yoshihiko Kannari Rec. Date: February 15th, 1971 Location: DUG, Tokyo Cover Photos: Hozumi Nakadaira Cover Design: Ben Nishizawa © & (p) 1972 enja records horst weber gmbh source of info: http://jazzrecords.com/enja/2006.htm It seems to be available still... I bought my copy a couple of months ago! By this time, the group had done away with all the fun structures (of any kind, melodical, rhythmical, how a song is built up etc) that makes their early two albums (Tension & Now Jazz Ramwong) so great. They're off into a different territory, but in my opinion, this disc is just as great!
  17. here you'll find all the info!
  18. Ah, ok! I have the Vogue Hodeir disc... pretty interesting stuff! Same goes for the two Hodeir discs in the JiP series (he's not billed as leader on one of them, it's #70 and #97).
  19. Volume 5 has music from: 'Cette Sacrée Gamine' (a Brigitte Bardot film) by Henri Crolla and Hubert Rostaing, 'Une Parisienne' (BB again) by Crolla and Rostaing 'Saint-Tropez Blues' by André Hodeir and Henri Crolla Is the last one that funny b/w documentary about the côte before the whole boom started there? I once caught the second half of such a film on tv, by chance... very 50s, pretty funny, with voiceover commentary and b/w images of the region and people, including some staged scenes.
  20. yo clem, I'll definitely pick up any Russell on Soulnote if I ever see any... just never saw any of it around and never really bothered enough to really hunt them... I would definitely be interested in the one that has Garbarek, seems he's great on it (if the Penguin chaps are reliable on this).
  21. Just finished disc one of the 3CD set of Transriptions by the Nat King Cole Trio (Capitol/Blue Note)
  22. did you get my pm?
  23. added the Dexter to the "Savoy Jazz Originals", forgot it, even though I have it (it's great, but the non-Bud and non-Fats dates lack some alternates).
  24. Maybe - but when Clark or Nichols died they had reached their peak, whereas Randy's top recordings were made after his Riversides. Only with the Roulette/UA sessions in the Mosaic Select he was at his best, and from then ever after. Melba Liston may be the critical ingredient here - her arrangements enhanced Weston's tunes in the best way possible. I cant think of him without thinking of her great arrangements. True! It was a stupid thought anyway... but I'm not sure Clark had reached his peak... anyway, stupid and off topic! The Marrakech solo outing is indeed a very fine one! I couldn't name a favourite of the solos spontaneously (I't tend to name "African Nite" on Owl at this moment). How is the Enja? I never got hold of it! And what do you think of the strings project (one of the last ones by Liston, I think)? I like it alright but it's not one I return to all that often, I'm afraid.
  25. I have only got the Fargo set, nothing else that's in this box... looks great to me! (But it's likely going to be pretty expensive?)
