Max Roach, Miles Davis Mosaics running low
king ubu replied to J.A.W.'s topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
yeah, but the swiss bastids have already checked the website to find out the real value, since the 5$ are obviously humbug! sent in my Roach order (adding the Tolliver and Wiley discs) last night. ouch! -
Sad news. All of his I've heard is the OJC (I started a thread about that back when) and the tracks on the RCA Arrangers compilation - I'd definitely be in for a longer ride!
-
So for reasonably loud listening, indoor use, they should work alright, provided they don't sound like crap? I'll give them a try, they won't cost me more than a double disc set, so...

None of the JATP material is on the Verve box. What you're missing would mostly be available on VME discs, plus the very bad Paris date cheaply on Universal's "Jazz in Paris" series. Main thing you're missing, besides a few early dates, is the Pres & Teddy one.

found this in an ebay description: 2x 90W Musik; 2x 70W Sinus what would that mean? that these speakers are too weak? would that be a problem if I don't crank the volume up too high?
-
could these here be ok? TECHNICS SB-CS6 http://cgi.ebay.de/TECHNICS-BOXEN-SB-CS6-3...1QQcmdZViewItem with front cover, for a bit less than 30 euro, used, off course...

Which Jazz box set are you grooving to right now?
king ubu replied to Cliff Englewood's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
Now the end of disc 4 with the "Trio Live" sessions - great! I prefer the sound of this trio over the Peacock/Motian one on "Trio '64", can't say why, but Israels/Bunker is one of my favourite Evans trios. The date with Getz is alright, but this is an instant where I could happily live without some of the bits included in the box. Elvin is interesting, though! -

I assume you have the 2CD set on Savoy which collects the other Harden/Coltrane sessions? Terrific music, Harden is great! *********************** Discs 1-3 of the Evans Verve box (so far, hoping to continue for another few hours). Great stuff! I like "Empathy" very much, "Conversations with Myself" a bit less, but now "Trio '64" is again very nice! (I left out the McFarland for now) -
you can also listen to Eric Dolphy if you want to listen to some idiot wearing sunglasses in a studio...
-
Terrific! It's a big band album of first order! Originally on Philips, not on Columbia, I think.
-
What's wrong with the LP? it doesn't fit Ship it to me. it's so big, it won't fit on a ship
-
All of that session is on the "'58 Miles feat. Stella by Starlight" CD. which is one of the old, usually rather bad-sounding, Sony/Legacy CDs with the blue frame, and which I never got...
-
nothing wrong with the LP, porcy, it's just that I'm a CD man (4 or 5 thousand, over 200 or less LPs) and I don't use my record player that often (in fact I still have it at my parents' house where I stay once a week only, but now with my new amplifier I might consider moving it finally...)

Max Roach, Miles Davis Mosaics running low
king ubu replied to J.A.W.'s topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
me, too!!!! shit, me too! this hurts my bank account badly! -
almost 10 $ for a box with 10 empty jewel cases over here - pretty crazy, much more expensive than empty cdrs...
-
the oppressive regime of the bushists created a climate that led blue note to self-censorship, thusly repressing the release of an album titled "basra"... and of course I assume you're aware that many of the earlier bn rvgs were released before cc was introduced and never came out in cc versions.
-
What's great about the Miles/Trane set is to hear that 1958 date in its entirety - that version of "Love for Sale" is terrific!
-
You'll also need the Carnegie Hall concert - one of my favourites! Teo is smoking, Mobley is on all the way through, and the "Concierto de Aranjuez" is probably better than the studio version! I really don't get it why that album (or rather double disc set, nowadays) isn't regarded higher! Edited to add: I have all the Columbia boxes (plus "Someday", "Carnegie", "Blackhawk") and I like them quite some. True, they're not exactly comfortable to handle, but they include pretty good liners, usually (except for that one white-print-on-yellow page in the Silent Way box...)
-
I am not absolutely sure, but I think I might have seen Basra without cc. I'll stick with my TOCJ version, though, one of very few and one for which I paid way too much, but it was the only chance I had to get this fine album and I wouldn't miss that!
-
the only bad thing is likely that the non-RVG copycraps will probably not see new pressings but rather just go OOP (for instance all the Cannonballs, his "In Europe" is one of the very best, yet I still only have the Jazzland LP from the 80s).
-
Naxos is very fair when issuing "historic jazz" - and the sound is the best you can get from ordinary 78 rpm record: http://www.naxos.com/catalogue/item.asp?item_code=8.120651 http://www.naxos.com/catalogue/item.asp?item_code=8.120766 http://www.naxos.com/catalogue/item.asp?item_code=8.120621 thanks for that recommendation, I only have one or two Naxos discs so far, didn't think to check there!
-
good news to share (assuming it's indeed new...): in a recent sale of Blue Notes CDs over here, I picked up a couple of discs that used to be copycrap cactus things but have now obviously been pressed as regular CDs again: Cecil Taylor's "Conquistador" and Freddie Hubbard's "Blue Spirits". It's pretty obvious that these were cc discs, since the "RVG Edition" writing inside the spine still doesn't spread on the whole length, rather there's empty/black space in the place where earlier the copy protection logo had been placed. I remember most here thought that even after the cc was stopped over here, they'd just continue to sell those in the earlier known versions (with copy protection), rather than change back to real CDs. Seems they do change back to regular CDs now!

Thanks for mentioning this, wasn't aware, will have to look for that one!

European Board Members Meeting

Quite the same here... but it seems you occasionally are allowed to eat pasta but only al dente (of course!), and not with meat, just with tomatos or whatever vegetable(s) you want...
