Up! No americans at all signing up, except for BM?
-
huh, I can insert a different thing there, now? how do I do that?
-
Wow, that's great news brownie - thanks for sharing! There's some more info on that session on the Lucky Thompson thread here: http://www.organissimo.org/forum/index.php...&hl=dennard

Thanks, got such a Mantelstromfilter thingie for 24 franks at a shoppe today, works swell!
-
Thanks a lot for your help! I have the American sessions on a 4CD compilation on Definitive... may I go to hell for that... So it seems the first JSP and the Rome would be great to have, in addition to what I already own. Going the Fremeaux route would be an exaggeration for me, I don't need each bit and piece, but it would be cool to have most or all of the QHCF sessions! Btw: I can't remember who it was, but I think someone said the JSP sound a lot better than the Mosaic...

mine arrived, finally! looks great! did anyone save the online discography in time?
-
Oh, I see - makes sense, as EMI-owned material has been what Mighty Quinn reissued so far... seems that chap over on AAJ didn't do his homework!

Happy Birthday, Jim! -
Here's an AAJ review: http://www.allaboutjazz.com/php/article.php?id=23958 I wonder, what OJC was this on, or how was it called? I only know of "Basie Reunion", "On the Sunny Side of the Street" and "For Basie", and it's none of them: http://concordmusicgroup.com/artists/album/index.php?id=3998

Yes, the Jacquet! But then I wonder, isn't that part of the Lonehill Jacquet series? Or does that one start later? The two long jams with Ben Webster are *da shit*, as they say, while the rest of the stuff is sort of the same stuff as on the great Mosaic set of Jacquet's. The Bellson is merely so-so, too short, not enough substance for me to tell if it's really that good - the small group isn't that intriguing, but I think there's one great Tadd Dameron chart on the big band part, and there's a short glimpse (or two?) of Wardell Gray there, too! The Teagarden is great - BIG sentimental favourite of mine, Big T singing the songs of Willard Robinson (for instance "A Cottage for Sale", "Old Folks", "Where Are You" and the wonderful "Guess I'll Go Back Home This Summer" - most warmly recommended, of course also for some marvellously beautiful trombone playing! The Dinah is old-fashioned stuff, I got it to have them all and paid quite a bit, but it's not that great a disc, I'd say. The Lewis, well - depends on if you like some stride piano or not... the De Franco I never really liked that much, too sweet, somehow. I think that one may be out on Lonehill, too?

yup - I bought the only in-store copy I ever saw, at the usual crazy Swiss Universal CDs prize, about 20 euro, roughly...

I just recently got hold of that one, finally! That's the one I mentioned above, it's easily available on CD at this time, here it is on US Amazon via big-o: http://www.amazon.com/Live-Berlin-Dizzy-Gi...1711&sr=8-1 cover of the current edition:

congrats, definitely worth having!

and this one is so great, it's beyond comparison anyway!

Guy, I'm not quite sure about Herbie. With him I always have a feeling that there's some kind of exploration involved (not to say he's an "explorative mind", I guess that would be a bit of an exaggeration). His "Rock It" stuff was what's happening at the time, as far as I know (I hadn't been around for more than a couple dozen months back then, so I don't *know*). I don't think Corea's elektrik (yuck, the spellink already hurts my mind!) band ever was about much, except showing off chops and doing doodly muzak. Maybe Hancock was there at some points in his career, but then he always gets out of it again, I think, for instance with his duo with Shorter (live shows may be a better example than the studio album), or later again with Shorter in the Hancock-Shorter-Holland-Blade band. Corea hasn't really done that kind of stuff often, anymore, has he?

Mythic Sound recordings of Bud Powell

Thanks for posting this link, it's good to at least know more exactly what's on that set, even though we'll never have all of it! -
funny to see this thread up again on the day I bought another disc that I guess jazzkat should have tasted if he was still around: I quite agree with the alias-changing-one's assessment of Corea, though obviously I don't know that much about RTF (only original one for me, so far, but I haven't had an opportunity to check out later editions). One more recent (1981...) release I enjoy a lot is the Montreux "eat carrots" gig with Joe Hen, Gary Peacock and Haynes - a mighty fine live set! I also found this one recently, but it's not as good as "Now He Sings...":

so me being kind of a newbie (hey, I was born several decades after Christian had died - don't blame me for that, Mr Steve!), it would be best to get the Columbia and the JSP boxes, I guess? I've had the two old Columbia discs for a long time but haven't gotten that box yet although it's been on my list ever since it came out... anyway, there's some kind of Definitive sale around here, thus I wondered should I get their live box, but it seems the JSP might be the better choice, no? As for the studio, it's pretty obvious I'll get the Sony/Columbia, rather than the pirate version.

"Soulful Drums" is a great one! Don't have the other one, though... Recent arrivals: - Jimmy Heath - The Quota (Japanese edition, seems OOP in the US/Europe) - Ella Fitzgerald - The Gershwin Songbook - Johnny Griffin - Way Out - Johnny Griffin - Sextet and just ordered: - Don Patterson/Booker Ervin - Legends of Acid Jazz

I did not sign up Probably won't take part but I'll gladly take the CDs! that's fine - it's all nice and fun music, nothing to get headaches from (well, not you anyway!) so I hope you'll enjoy them even without posting about them!
-
now playing the other 2CD set with Bill Evans, "At Last" (32 jazz)
-
Playing that Freshsound set right now, great music! Would certainly be great to have this in a decent-sounding version done by a more caring label!

so then, it's getting close to June... not to derail from John's great compilation, but I figure you can at the same time play his centralyurop barbecue music *and* drop me a PM to sign-up for another summerly party compilation. I'll take the download route, too - it will be four files, making up two full discs of MP3@320kbs. I hope that's not too much, but then actually disc 1 is the main disc, and disc 2 is kind of a bonus/additional stuff disc, containing some related rarities and adding some more things that obviously didn't fit onto disc 1... But then, even though it's almost 160 minutes of music I'll share, it will be all or mostly new to most of you, I think, and most of it is stuff that grooves, stuff that's fun, stuff that's easy on the ears and mind, so I hope plenty of you take the plunge, even if you don't see fit to post much or any comments, feel free to drop me a line so I can share the download links with you once I got the four files up! PS: If anyone desparately needs a CD version (I'd do it from the MP3s for yurp and would ask someone to do it for me that way stateside, if needed), let me know! The fact that you're on dial-up or have a 2GB harddisk or whatever stoneage equipment (hey hey, I'd been there until two years ago...) should't prevent you from joining the fun! Another note: I'm happy to send out links to folks such as brownie even if they say they likely won't post. But in this case it would be kind of you if you'd advise me that most likely you are not going to post anything, just so I don't expect 20 replies and only get 5... ************************************************************** *** signed up *** couw mikeweil tooter eke bbb the magnificient goldberg niko bright moments sidewinder stefan wood tom in ri (might end up silent participator) john b clunky dztchmanx nate dorward fent99 silent participants brownie (will get a set of - MP3-sourced, sorry - CDRs in the mail!) indigo
