I was too late for the Trane box at 2001... and "Fearless Leader" is a great set - definitely nicer than the small cube-box ZYX editions... and it's great that the original liners are all there, also cover reproductions in colour (if ZYX booklets had that, it was badly-copied b/w scans, about 1 x 1 millimeter or so... the Pepper Galaxy is one of the worst jobs in that respect, Evans Fantasy not much behind). Anyway, it's about the music, of course, and if I had the large box, I'd never have thought of getting "Fearless Leader", but now I want the new one, too... I guess you know how it goes!

I still have to play the McGregor solo albums... (and also still have to get the two recent BoB reissues...) But here's a fine album I found on sale last week: McCoy Mrubata is on saxophones, with him are other young south african musicians, including Paul Hanmer (piano), Zim Ngqawana (sticking to baritone sax), Moses Khumalo (alto sax), Marcus Wyatt & Prince Lengoasa (trumpet) Monkie Senkhana (trombone), and others, forming groups of varying size. Here's a short review that catches the moods: source: http://entertainment.iafrica.com/music/archives/197798.htm

what MikeWeill mentioned above, the sessions with Draper and Elmo Hope and that's all? would be a nice set, I should think...
-
The place for the 1971 tracks is Chateauvallon!
-
just in case, if the third box would happen, it would include: - parts of the Gene Ammons "Groove Blues" / "The Big Sound" session - the Tadd Dameron album - the loooooong session with Red Garland ("Soul Junction" etc. - four albums - are they all with Coltrane? or is he only on a few tracks on each?) - the date(s) with Mal Waldron what else?
-
some stuff on sale (bought in the past 2-3 weeks): - Oliver Nelson: second helping of Blues & Abstract Truth - Sonny Rollins: Alfie - Peggy Lee: Black Coffee (marvellous!) - Mariano/Hübner2/Beirach: Beauty (Intuition) - Art Blakey: Indestructible (RVG - finally found a non-CC version) - Jenny Scheinman: 12 Songs (Cryptogrammophone) - Matthias Kielholz: Sunny Strings (Brambus) - Teddy Edwards: Nothin' but the Truth (OJC/Prestige - from amazon marketplace) - Trotignon/El-Malek Quartet (naïve) - Joe Turner: 1907-1990 Giant of Stride Piano in Switzerland (Jazz Connoisseur) and a few more that I can't remember right now... - Tony Kofi: Future Passed (on a Proper sub) - McCoy Mrubata: Face the Music (Sheer)

that would have been me... here's my post from the Max Roach corner concerning this album: I'll try and play it again in the next days...

Renaud... hm, I have some of his discs, but he never struck me as an especially interesting pianist. He always was good in bringing interesting line-ups together, though: from the "Original Vogue Masters" series: - Bobby Jaspar/Henri Renaud - The 1954 Paris Sessions (dates led by Roy Haynes, René Thomas, Frank Foster, all with Renaud) - the Oscar Pettiford album with Al Cohn and Tal Farlow (in the US on one of Fantasy's "Birdlanders" CDs) - Quartet w/Al Cohn (has this been on a "Birdlanders" disc, too?) - and one I don't have yet: All Stars (I guess also on a "Birdlanders" disc, but I wouldn't know) The last two came out in the most recent batch of Vogue Masters, a year or so ago (or has it been longer by now?) from the "Jazz in Paris" series - Zoot Sims et Henri Renaud (includes a nice Zims date with Jon Eardley and a Renaud album with a larger group) - Lucky Thomson "Modern Jazz Group" (I think this also came out on a Prevue CD in the US - or was that one of Lucky's Vogue discs?) and more I guess, that I can't remember right now... The Birdlander dates done in '54 in the US of course also included sessions by Al Haig and Duke Jordan and Jay and Kai... so Renaud's contribution shouldn't be underestimated - it's just that he never struck me as an exciting voice on the piano... edited to add: I have the Saturne disc, too - fine, but mainly of interest to me because of Bobby Jaspar's presence!

DVD with good commentaries
king ubu replied to Van Basten II's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
I never watched any DVD with commentaries, so far... just doesn't interest me that much... (to be honest, I wouldn't even know if any of my DVDs has such comments by actors/director/whomever). Though Scorsese's long film about the american cinema is kind of going in that direction and I love his remarks and thoughts about the (usually fairly short) snippets of films that are shown! One of the best lectures on cinema I ever attended was a screening of that (and his Italian film history, too, but that one was less entertaining - I knew much more about it and there were much less films being discussed, and excerpts shown were much longer... I'd just rather have caught the actual films there... even though Scorsese's affection and admiration were touching.) -

Vince Wilburn III. has gone missing on the thank yous... also Vince Wilburn IV. - Too bad no one had Vince overdub that noisy unstructured drumming by that kiddo Tony W. who was no good anyway...
-
I only have one, the Red Rodney "Modern Music from Chicago" - have recently managed to get a decently prized CD (it's called "Quintets" and has another, slightly less interesting date on it), too. Edit: truebluemusic.com has some of the LPs on their running low list (at least there were some when I last took a look, a couple of weeks ago)

"Spellbound" I assume? If it's his other OJC I'd gladly take it off your hands! It's Mosaic I have a surplus copy of - two sessions, one with Kenny Dorham and Cedar Walton, The other with Sonny Red. Both are excellent. Reserved if you wish! Sorry, I didn't see that post earlier - I have "Mosaic", it's the other one I still miss, "Bearcat". (And the Milestone big band album, but that one's not so high on my wantlist.)
-
Sad news - the Penguin guides are still my favourite books to flip around a bit... even in cases I disagree, I often enjoy reading their opinions...

Another year has passed... all the best to you, wherever you hang around! Have some of this to celebrate:
-
Forrest Fire is very nice - I just finally got hold of a legit copy of that one a few weeks ago (part of the fegh concord frenzy). Am I allowed to type here when my fingers are greazzzzyyyyy?
-
pretty good one, but I guess not everyone's cup of tea...
-
Marc Hemmeler not much info to be found online, but I have a very nice LP of his (trio, with Alvin Queen and a Swiss bass player), and he appears on the Montreux set (1974 I think) by Guy Lafitte/Bill Coleman. He also did one or two albums with Shelly Manne and Ray Brown that I don't have... fine pianist he was.
-
Ah yes, I forgot that one... another fine set!
-
Sorry to hear about your cat, indeed. Our own cat (she's roughly 10 but we don't know exactly) was badly injured while we were on holiday - with almost 10 more days before we went home, and she also went missing for two or three days... our neighbours had to track her down and bring her to a doctor... she's quite ok again by now, luckily. Anyway, telling this is just a way to say I can feel your pain
-
Good one - played it last night! I rememberd having another Trotignon disc (in trio) - will have to give it a spin again, too: Here's a short bio from the site of the Moutin Reunion Quartet (seems he's replaced Pierre De Bethman by now? I wasn't aware of that - no, it was the other way 'round, I just checked, De Bethman came in *after* Trotignon).

I wish I could find it. Only 300$ on Amazon & ebay. There's a pirate edition, goes for 25 € on amazon.de - it's a digipack, Douglas label (not sure how pirate that is, but I always thought it was a rip-off of the "old" Knit edition, which I have, by the way). -
there's a thread dedicated to him here - I'm a fan! http://www.organissimo.org/forum/index.php?showtopic=5604 (I see I started it...)
