  3. some more: Can't find Vol. 2, sorry. Now back on topic, please
  4. I found this one yesterday while looking for an Arnett Cobb cover: It's by far the largest scan I found.
  5. Remember to include couw's booklet with it, that's worth more than the original anyway! And don't forget couw's piece of the €5000 cake, either I'll travel to Stralsund and pass over some couple of small change personally, but only if he accomodates me for free, of course
  6. Ordered 9th, it says 18 Oct - 26 Oct for me... I'll offer the 2001 version (with neither booklet nor box) for 5000 € on Amazon Marketplace if they deliver!
  7. haven't gotten a reply to my first mail (written when this thread ended), so I wrote again, forwarding the original mail and kindly asking for any kind of reaction... they're going to replace the faulty disc, the mail was a bit weirdly put, so I hope I'll not just get a burn...
  8. Donald Byrd Sextet Donald Byrd (tp) Bernard McKinney (euph) Yusef Lateef (ts) Barry Harris (p) Alvin Jackson (b) Frank Grans (d) Detroit, MI, August 23, 1955 Parisian Thoroughfare Transition TRLP 5 Yusef - Shaw 'Nuff - Torsion Level - Woody'n You - Dancing In The Dark - Blues - Donald Byrd - Byrd Jazz (Transition TRLP 5) That's the one that was put out on CD by Delmark: (cover of the 1991 CD) Is it good? I have the Byrd Transition 2CD set on BN and it's pretty good, but I never came around getting this one - of course here I'd go with the Delmark, as the bonus cuts are of no interest to me and Gambit generally has too many items in their catalogue that float freely among collectors... (I think I have not one Gambit disc so far)

I know their reputation here isn't too great, but this kind of project to me makes them a worthwhile thing for me... it does seem to pay off to put out this stuff in such rather thorough compiled forms, so I still wonder why those who keep the masters and own the rights don't see the least bit of interest in releaseasing it themselves.
  10. I have the Mosaic and like it a lot. After that I only got one of the Prestige in last year's zweitausendeins ZYX/Fantasy sale (I think it's the explosive one, but I didn't love it that much) and the Verve Elite reissue of the album with Ben Webster (actually two 10 inchers, I think). I'd love to have all of the Verve stuff compiled somehow! Lonehill has a series of Jacquet twofers, I think it's more than the two you indicate, MG! I'll look for the one with "Go Power" first, then... but not right now!
  11. my order ships today - even though I'm broke and even though shipping costs are a blatant rip-off, I just had to go for this, seeing it was back up! thanks for starting this thread, sidewinder!
  12. ok, I can see that point - as I said I like them alright, seen them live once, too (with Stubblefield, shortly before he died, much too early). anyway, they're still kind of "derivative", even if not an actual ghost band... and in mainstream jazz, they might indeed be one of the liveliest outfits around these days (for instance, I find Holland's music more and more boring, can't help it... I realize it's not the music that changes much - though maybe that in fact is part of the problem - but my perception of it...)
  13. I have the set on now. It's really a beautifully done box, and it was $45.97 shipped for a five CD set from Amazon. In addition to the Dameron, Elmo Hope, and Ray Draper sessions, it's also missing the Red Garland sessions. Hope the third box with those sessions sees the light of day. This and 'Fearless Leader' were obviously labors of love. These are not missing, as these are "sideman" dates, as opposed to Coltrane taking part in jam sessions (which is the focus of this set). Glad to hear it's a nice box, will have to get it eventually! And here's more hope they'll really bring the third (sideman) box, too! The context of the discussion WAS what would be on the sideman box set. "Missing" didn't indicate that it was supposed to be on the co-leader box set, rather that it was left to go on the sideman box set. I really would like to see this set. Would be much more efficient that a bunch of loose pieces, it's up to each person to decide what's "not that exciting", and the presentation is so wonderful on these sets. So you were replying to my own post #16, i guess - sorry, wasn't aware of that. Anyway, as I said, I love the "Fearless Leader" box for it's great presentation, and I will want to get this new one, too, eventually... might make a nice x-mas gift...
  14. well, I jumped in head first, getting the Mosaic, after having known but "Spiral" (a so-so album on Freedom, with Ted Curson, Lee Konitz and others in various settings) - I then proceeded listening to all of it chronologically, and love the twin basses and the extremely sharp and smart drumming of Hayes a lot... however, I loved stuff like "Out to Lunch" for a long time before, so I was used to some "odd" sounds...
  15. I've seen your listening to this again and again... but I'm broke now and shouldn't buy too much, really! Sounds definitely interesting to me, though...
  16. Smokestack, too! This and Judgement may in the end by my favourites! (with Point of Departure running close third) edited to correct the album's title (thought it was "Smoke Stack"...)
  17. another great one: http://www.newjungleorchestra.com/ Pierre Dørge & New Jungle Orchestra (from the homepage) I've got three of their Steeplechase discs (the self-titled one, Brikama & Johnny Lives) and like them a lot. Also got a live show on DVD - terrific! Harry Beckett, holy crap! And John Tchicai, Johnny Dyani, Marilyn Mazur and others were all part of this group at one time, keyboardist Irene Becker still is with them, it seems. Great outfit, for sure! I think I'd recommend "Johnny Lives" for those not familiar, but I don't know any of their more recent efforts.
  18. Dedalo (Enja Winckelmann) by Gianluigi Trovesi & WDR Big Band: Ekapa Lodumo (Enja Winckelmann) by Abdullah Ibrahim & NDR Big Band: These are just two examples, of course... I don't have either but heard live broadcasts on tv and radio of these programmes and loved the music quite some!
  19. not sure what I'd vote here... maybe ICP? and wtf is the mingus bb doing here if there's supposed to be no ghost bands? I like them alright, but with all their repertoire being from mingus, I consider it a ghost band. and just because Schneider did a project with the DRBB... there are other very good radio big bands over here, though just a few ones remain by now, NDR Big Band and WDR Big Band deserve mention just as much as the DR BB, I'd say!
  20. bumping this up because of this thread over here: http://www.organissimo.org/forum/index.php?showtopic=36577
  21. found it, it's after all by rooster: http://www.organissimo.org/forum/index.php?showtopic=14388 is that the one you meant, niko?
  22. ICP! Martial Solal's Dodecaband and recent Newdecaband still searching for older threads, can't find any but I remember at least one, not sure that one was by rooster, though... it was about mid-sized ensembles, ten-piece, groups like that.
  23. well, who cares - wishlist is just all that I don't have yet...
  24. I wasn't even aware that existed! Looks interesting! Kenny Burrell - Barry Galbraith Quartet Kenny Burrell, Barry Galbraith (g) Leonard Gaskin (b) Bobby Donaldson (d) Rudy Van Gelder Studio, Hackensack, NJ, May 10, 1957 1246 Billie's Bounce Status ST 8318; Prestige PR 7448 1247 Prelude To A Kiss - 1248 It Don't Mean A Thing - 1249 unknown title Prestige rejected * Various Artists - Guitar Soul (Status ST 8318) * The Best Of Kenny Burrell (Prestige PR 7448)
  25. Mike, I think the 2 guitars and Day may both have been in the recent reissues done by Universal over here in Europe. I got both of them in a sale half a year or so ago. Both fine albums, by the way. The Night album I got in the zweitausendeins.de ZYX-sale, so I didn't fare too badly. But if you find the Lonehill for a good prize (I guess that would be all that's less than 20 euro, roughly) and can earn a couple of cents by selling the Night, why not go that route. I guess it's by now too late to think too much about ethical questions as far as the big labels go, and Concord is screwing up too much indeed, so... if you still feel bad, support some small labels in return, their future despite the demise of the CD market may still be brighter than the majors', even more so if people actually buy their stuff! And if the Spanish/Andorran labels take care of the music the majors don't care for any longer, all the better for us, in the end! (Though I'd have loved to keep buying OJCs from Fantasy for years to come, of course, but Concord...)
