Yes, but in the case of said Woody Shaw disc, they deleted their offer and put it in again... so what should I believe? That they're lying? If so, Amazon should do something against what I'd consider an abuse. I guess I'm just naïve... anyway, it's not a good service they offer, at least not as far as I am concerned.

I think I've had one bad experience with them, but not nearly as bad as you describe I just got my money back after a while, no mails needed)... however, I stay away from them, too. And even if the'yre swiss, the shipping charge is the usual 6 euro for European marketplace orders, so there's no reason to prefer them to others, gladly!

Yes, probably it was bad luck on my side, but I can't afford their practice to just take the money first... I know all Amazon sellers do it that way, but it still sucks! Would be a lot nicer if these marketplace orders were being handled the same way normal amazon orders are: you pay once they fill in your order only. I wouldn't be nearly as outspoken about my negative experience with Caiman if that were the case.

I'm sorry, but that's no myth. Their delivery rate is probably only slightly better than 50% with my orders, which total - I guess - at 25-30, only. And they're not very likely to get many more orders from me.

I have reported already but I repeat again that I have to - alas - disagree with all these positive opinions on Caiman. Countless times (certainly 10 times!) in this year, they did NOT deliver items they listed. They did NEVER give me back my money without me either cancelling the order or dropping them a mail. I still have one order open (for Woody Shaw's "Song of Songs" or whatsitcalledagain, third attempt with Caiman for that item, third time non-delivery). So I agree with them being called "shady", as they seem to regularly list items as available that they do NOT actually have in stock. That is bad business, or at least bad service of their databases/warehouses. And it sucks. And when I complained by mail, all I got back was a mail I could always use the cancellation-function on their website to get my money back - so add superb customer service to the list, too... I have tried to avoid ordering anything from them if other marketplace sellers have the same item listed, too. And the only thing they actually did deliver in recent months took a month or so to arrive, which is far too long for the shipping prizes you have with international orders on Amazon.

There's some video material floating around, at least from 1973, but I haven't watched it yet, so I have no clue about quality (I think Vienna 1973 is one I have, I caught glimpses of it and it lookd... alright, I guess at least). Duffy's 1969 is a bad-sounding audience tape that was part of the Lost Quintet tree wiht wrong speed (a corrected version was up on dime some time ago). That's interesting... I have yet to hear anything with Brecker on it that *really* convinces me (I have the great Grolnick Blue Note 2CD set and the Silver 27th album, possibly some others - he's good enough there, for sure). Anyway, the one occassion I saw him live was with Benny Golson's weak Clifford Brown hommage tour package, and Reichstaller was easily the most convincing soloist on stage, playing with feeling and emotion, whereas Brecker - even on his t + rhythm feature "I Remember Clifford"! - was just all speed and flash and high notes, all at loud volume, as if he'd hidden a compressor under his jacket... dead, soul-less music. (It was a weird concert anyway, Golson tired, Buster Williams playing with an ugly 80s-like pick-up bass-sound... Mike Le Donne and Al Foster were fine, though.)

Interesting post, Daniel. I have thought about this myself, too. As far as new/contemporary music goes, I'm sure this won't be a big problem, many small labels are actively producing albums in CD format, beyond what the majors are doing, and the majors seem largely spent on many accounts - too bad only that they hold the rights/masters of so many historically important things! A guess for how things could possibly evolve is in direction of accessible storage repositories, to which you can get access, similarly to how you pick up a book from the library. I assum I'd be willing to pay for digital files if the quality is right, but then that may be the point... quality to the large mass of music (and film, too!) consumers is of no importance any longer.

You certainly can't blame ECM for that development, that's rather all-encompassing nowadays... and the bad thing is that in music business it seems to only fasten the demise of the big corporations... and you can blame ECM for jumping that train, for sure! Anyway, still waiting for Sam Rivers' "Contrasts"! (There the original cover should be ok enough to be re-used, I assume...)
