  1. Thanks a lot, Jazztrain, much appreciated! I'll clean it all up, but it will need some time... if someone else feels like it, step ahead! As I said, my source was a PDF of what to me looked like fairly regular CD (jewel case) inlays, with no pics though... they may have been done by someone who like me was just compiling the info (though that someone obviously also had all of that music...), probably to go along with a self-made CDR-transfer of the LP box... I didn't re-group the sessions, just copy/pasted what I got.
  2. Thanks Harold - corrected!
  3. I don't know if this really is all - I got a PDF somewhere (too large to upload) for 15 CDs with all of the music except for the Carter alternates marked with two asterisks (**). I typed up all of this info some time ago, glad to share it here. Of course it's missing release info, so it's more of a sessionography, I assume... and I hope there aren't too many typos in there! If you know of additional alternates or discs that contained more than the box (as is the case with the Carter CD), let me know and I'll change the first post!
  4. That's the Capitol Transcriptions, right? How about the Circle CDs, are those also "must haves"?
  5. That Classics Duke Ellington 1940 Vol.2 is such an incredible set of songs it is really worth having. Those are the first RCA sessions of the Blanton/Webster band - indeed terrific music! I'm lucky to have bad ears, so the sound on the big RCA box doesn't bother me too much and I don't need to get additional versions of that music...
  6. repeating this from another thread, just so it will be easier to locate in case anyone's looking for it in the future Keynote Collection discography - I hope there aren't too many typos... (*) indicates previously unissued (**) Cater & Ross Sessions: additional alternates first on CD (The Complete Benny Carter - The Essential Keyone Collection 7) - thanks to Cuck! 7. Wow, I just spent two hours figuring this out... I guess for the 1938-1940 period I'll stick with the (still to be bought) Mosaic Small Group set. The years 1940-1946 are covered (RCA) The years 1946-50 have another bunch of Columbia (& Mercer & Musicraft) dates I don't have any of... Classics 1952 and 1952-53 are covered mostly by the RCA box, "Uptown" and then by the Capitol Mosaic. Classics 1950 is covered by "Great Time" (Fantasy CD) and "Masterpieces", mostly. I'll order Classics 1946-47, 1947, 1949-50 and 1950-51, I think. The last of which seems to be hard to find by now... Not yet sure about Classics 1951, as about half of it is on "Uptown" and "Masterpieces" - can anyone recommend it for the music I don't have yet? It would definitely be great to see a Columbia big band box - surfing around the Ellington Panorama site I see there's plenty of later Columbia material that has only been on those three 56-62 LPs (some of it may be on "Piano in the Foreground" and "Piano in the Background" as bonus tracks, though - didn't check that).
  8. Happy Birthday!

  12. ...or some such.
  13. I went to CD Now to listen to some tracks and now I'm totally not sure about this one. Although I dig organ playing, it sounds kind of old-fashioned here. So I may not pick this one up afterall. That's Bill Doggett I assume? I don't have the disc at hand, but it contains a lot of music from several sessions - the organ wasn't what I liked most, but I like Quinichette a lot, so to me it's a fine disc. I bought it in Warsaw when on vacation in 2000... didn't know Quinichette back then, or at least not beyond the Coltrane/Quinichette and Wheelin' and Dealin' discs... just sort of felt right for me to get it back then, and I never regretted that since, but if you don't like that kind of jazz, you might indeed either skip it or get it in order to trade it in for something you like (though that I never do).
  14. by the way, since this thread's up again, by now I got the Cleveland 2CD set (when in Paris in October, for a pretty attractive prize)
  15. yes, buy 'em all! The Brown and Modern Jazz Society are favourites of mine, the Bellson, well... I never liked it that much, but that one Tadd Dameron chart is great, as is the Wardell Gray solo (or are there two Wardell Gray solos? Can't remember). The Vice-Pres disc is fine, as is the Jacquet (though I also have the Mosaic, and except for the two long tracks with Ben Webster, I don't like it that much... it's just more of the same, as compared to the Mosaic, but it's fine for sure, just not great - same I'd say about the Bellson by the way... no trade/buy offers will be accepted, just to make sure!) The Peterson/DeFranco I've never gotten into really... still today I think it's one of the lamer VEEs, but I'll have to spin it again soon, it's been some years!
  16. Thanks Chuck - I'll have to check the discographies to figure out how badly I need which of these volumes (some of it is on the Small Group Mosaic, and from 1940 on, most is in the RCA box, I assume).
  17. Yes, I know, but there are gaps there. I think 1938 produced three volumes, and only 1938-1939 is there (the box I got ends with 1937-1938, there are at least two volumes in between I think - going from memory, though). Then 1939 is missing, and 1939-1940 is out of stock... after that, most or all of the volumes seem to be available again, but those years I've mostly covered with the RCA box. What will be of interest again though is the later Columbia sessions (beginning after the mid-forties Victor dates end). I have not yet sorted those out with "Uptown", "Masterpieces", and the few other discs from that period that I already own - and also I haven't given up hope entirely yet for a Columbia (or Mosaic) Ellington Columbia box (Mosaic could do the 4? to 5? Ellington on Columbia, covering the last few years before the albums replaced 78s and other formats, assuming the albums are mostly out on CDs already by Columbia themselves (or rather Sony, nowadays).
  18. Thanks for that Baobab rundown - all I have by them so far is a few live recordings, all from the past few years, and all at least very likeable. Too bad World Circuit keepnews'd their reissue - such cropped reissues do really suck! The Classic Titles series, I think, might be the one discussed some months ago in "Songlines"? I'm not quite sure, but that kind of cover design looks familiar. They got decent to good (3-4 stars) ratings, but they only discussed three of them, I think, but Baobab's was among them - will have to look it up.
  19. I like Eva too. Plus, she can act. My wife has reminded me that they killed her off. Oh well...that's what happens when you only see a movie once. Maybe I just blanked that part out. But anyway, they could bring her back as a different character. ooh, that's too bad! I forgot about that, too! would also hasve enjoyed seeing her a second time!
  20. What about Ellington from 1938-1940? I just bought 1932, 1932-1933 plus the third of the 6CD Ellington boxes (1933-1938), and I'd definitely be glad to get the ones filling up the gap to the 1940 Blanton/Webster recordings (which I have as part of the RCA 24CD set). Will those be re-pressed?
  21. I don't have all that many - only one Futura disc (Portal/Surman "Alors!" - fine one), but several Marge ones: Marge 18: Philly Joe Jones "Filet of Soul/Philly of Soul" Marge 14: Roy Burrowes "Live at Dreher, feat. Mal Waldron" Marge 09: Billy Harper "Awakening" Marge 04: David Murray "Let the Music Take You" Marge 02: Frank Lowe "Tricks of the Trade" Marge 01: Ted Curson "Cattin' Curson" Blue Marge 01: Archie Shepp: "Attica Blues Big Band" (2CD) Impro 04: Siegfried Kessler "Invitation" Those are all from nice to have to fine - I found all of them in various sales at cheap prizes, several after they'd been OOP for quite a while. But it's been quite some time that I saw any of them in stores by now. I assume even though it's costly, best would be to order directly from the label - they might be so kind and give you a little discount if you order several discs at the time (not that I knew, I never did, but I'd definitely try and ask).
  22. I have the Keynote info somewhere, will have to dig it up. About the Hawkins 4CD set - I always thought that oen was complete? What's missing?
  23. You should also get the "Rainbow Mist" disc by Hawkins - it's on Delmark, fits in nicely with the Hollywood Stampede disc and the Keynote box! My favourite session, btw, would be the two that brownie mentioned! Though some of the Tristano material is pretty awesome, too! I have the Prez on various labels, not the original Keynote disc, but I have the Hawkins, Early Bebop, Carter, Keynoters (Nat Cole), and Tristano discs. Being unwilling to pay horrendous prizes, I guess I'll leave it at that... too bad, as there'd be more good stuff on the others! Of course best would be to get a CD version of that old LP box - I would have had a chance to buy that one years ago, but I wasn't interested enough in this kind of jazz back then... too bad!
