What live music are you going to see tonight?
king ubu replied to mikeweil's topic in Live Shows & Festivals
coming ... wrote a long review in German, started translating, but will take me a moment ... plenty of snapshots I took there, not sure this site will allow me to include 'em all, so I'll link it here: http://forum.rollingstone.de/showthread.php?56960-2016-Jazzgigs-konzerte-amp-festivals&p=3585452&viewfull=1#post3585452 needless to say, it was effin' amazin'! -

Nat King Cole: His Musical Autobiography
king ubu replied to mikeweil's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
Told a friend about this box ... just got mine in fact, it looks splendid, but he mentiond this to me: Prodotto difettoso per ben due volte. L opera è molto bella ma fatta molto male in repubblica ceca (imagine quote-box around it, why don't we have this or the full editor any longer?) from here: http://www.amazon.it/Nat-King-Cole-Musical-Autobiography/dp/B00ZGUI6BE And alas, both is true with mine ... disc 9 has the JATP set with Cole, which sounds much better it seems (I only played the track in questoin, "The Man I Love") on "Nat King Cole & Friends - Riffin': The Decca, JATP, Keynote and Mercury Recordings" anyway (that's the Hip-O-Select 3 CD set from 2010) The DVD runs until 1:19 with me, if I go at 32x speed, it might or might not pass the next half minute, after that it seems to be okay again - but this sucks, Universal must have thrown out quality control (hey, they bought Blue Note so yeah, makes sense ...) Anyone has a contact address for Universal? This is not the way such a premium product ought to be like ... interestingly, that comment only turns up on aIT, no comments on any other sites so far, whatsoever. -
Are those two discs of BBC transcriptions worth getting (Bobby Wellins is on one of them after all), or is that overly polished and polite stuff?

r.i.p. love this album:

I'm in the "like" camp here (have the LP) - but someone once referred to it as "La placenta"

Thanks a lot for this info! I have an unauthorized copy of the Grant somewhere Got my Resonance deliveries on Friday (they arrived while I was on vacation last week) and gave this a spin already - it's effin' great! -
Another fan checking in ... those two double disc sets are most welcome, I think they pretty much cover all bases.

Yeah, agreed! Though as an ol' yurpeen I don't get to see Adasiewicz and consider Edwards/Noble one of today's prime rhythm sections, so the first night shall hopefully be just as priceless! Have seen Bennink and Schlippenbach (separately) in different contexts, but never yet Kondo! Thanks! Just hope I won't bump into any effin' nazis ... Love Kim Clarke! Long time not heard anything by her, but with Defunkt she was great (only on record for me), and so she was when I saw her live the one time, with a Jimi Hendrix project headed by Christy Doran (g) and Fredy Studer (d), with singer Erika Stucky the fourth member ... quite a fun project, at least in concert it certainly was! (don't know the CD they released) -
Which Jazz box set are you grooving to right now?

Haven't bought the Wheeler box yet ... but one not to overlook if you're into some of his freer stylings is "Song for Someone" (psi) - I enjoy that one very, very much!

just printed out my tickets for the Brötzmann anniversary gig in Warsaw, flight on Sunday around noon ... looking forward immensely - the programme is by now somewhat more specific, at least abut the closing sets of the four nights (no music on the first night, but I'll there there nonetheless): ▌06.03.2016, 19:00h » 15 PLN Screening „Rohschnitt Peter Brötzmann” (dir. Peter Sempel) 75th Birthday Party of Peter Brötzmann with Toshinori Kondo, Han Bennink, Steve Noble, Heather Leigh, John Edwards and Jason Adasiewicz ▌07.03.2016, 20:30h » 50 PLN 3 sets, each one about 30 min » including 2 „ad-hoc” sets and 1 set as follows: Peter Brötzmann / Jason Adasiewicz / John Edwards / Steve Noble ▌08.03.2016, 20:30h » 50 PLN 3 sets, each one about 30 min » including 2 „ad-hoc” sets and 1 set as follows: Peter Brötzmann & Heather Leigh Duo ▌09.03.2016, 20:30h » 50 PLN 3 sets, each one about 30 min » including 2 „ad-hoc” sets and 1 set as follows: Peter Brötzmann / Toshinori Kondo / Han Bennink / Alexander v. Schlippenbach ▌10.03.2016, 20:30h » 80 PLN First set: Peter Brötzmann & Han Bennink Second set: Peter Brötzmann / Toshinori Kondo / Han Bennink / Alexander von Schlippenbach / Heather Leigh / Steve Noble / Jason Adasiewicz / John Edwards -

jazzmessengers.com - easily recommended, free shipping (and tracked, too, so I usually have to pick it up at the post office, alas) http://www.jazzmessengers.com/en/70776/thad-jones/all-my-yesterdays-debut-1966-recordings-at-vv they have good prices on many labels, Resonance, Xanadu, Pi, Intakt, Steeplechase ... they're selling Mosaic's officially and by agreement with Mosaic (though usually I still order those straight from the label) ... they're also selling the entire euro PD crap, but as at least some of that (Fresh Sound!) is nowadays quite nice to have, with the major's jazz reissue programmes dead or on life-support, some of that is welcome, too ...

Thanks for all your impressions! Ordered mine from Catalonia last night - and from Mr. Sangrey's descriptions, this is going to be all as hot (and as much of a hoot) as I was expecting! Btw, Mr. Sangrey, do you know the Basle 1969 set with Joe Henderson? That one's hilariously fun, too! (isn't there an earlier thread, can't they be merged? or is chaos method here?)

Great news for sure! I think was Jim (who else ) who mentioned after the big Hancock Columbia box that a Cannonball Capitol box would be mighty cool and alike in some respects ... and that this would never happen - too true, I'm afraid, but I love the idea and I'm glad to see more of his late albums making re-appearance!
-
just got a cancellation notice for the Colbeck I had on order ... including this: "At this time, there is no indication to show whether or not it might be released at a later time in the future." too bad, really!

aka RYM ... though why even bother. But I'm in the love "Dance with Death" camp though generally I feel Hill never quite (but in the best moments almost) reached the heights of the first years again.

Don't think there's a requirement to use emoticons to signalize irony, right?

Hadn't even known he was a musician, but his Hawkins biography is great.
-
What does he recommend, buy any of the seven other versions readily available?

Have you heard Bobby Pierce's "New York" (Muse, 1974)?
king ubu replied to HutchFan's topic in Miscellaneous Music
Prefer "Introducing", Strozier notwithstanding.
