  1. The labels take influence on how much music Mosaic's allowed to put on a CD? Seriously? In what ridiculous a world are we living... holding corporation called America, I guess, and everyone else is voluntarily accepting and following its rules...
  2. just saw "Major Dundee" on Friday night... he did some good films, but what do I know...
  3. I'm aware of that, of course! I also have his own disc, "Gallery", which is very good! Is he (are you, in case you're reading, Free for All!) only on these two volumes?
  4. It was my post - which was: ????????????????????? Then I saw that Flurin had shortened things and my post wasn't appropriate, so I deleted it. Just not soon enough. I guess I'm pretty good in crazy posts...
  5. What do people think of the Brad Goode/Vonski "Inside Chicago" discs on Steeplechase? I just got Vols. 3 & 4 which are part of a small Steeplechase sale on abeillemusique.com (I also got the Gillspie 1959 "Copenhagen Concert" and Walt Dickerson's "To My Queen Revisited").
  6. oops, that was in reply to a post already deleted by it's author... (I wondered why the quote-function wouldn't work, now I know...) Anyway, in short my question: 1) does Volume 4 of the Fremeaux "Complete Louis Armstrong" series contain any non Hot Five/Seven sides? 2) how many are those, and are they reason enough to buy that set in addition to the 4CD Sony/Columbia set that I already own? (and of less interest to myself: 3) has anyone compared the sound? I know many have issues with the Sony version and prefer the JSP, which I haven't heard myself)
  7. Hey, don't you like my quick-typed free association posts?
  8. How cool is that - only now I realize you can check out the booklets (though not for Volume 1 and not [yet?] for Volume 4) as PDFs! Complete Louis Armstrong Vol. 2 Complete Louis Armstrong Vol. 3
  9. While I haven't started deeply exploring Volume 1, it looks great (and contains likely just about as much King Oliver as I'll need...). Now I have the Hot Fives/Sevens (Columbia/Sony 4CD set) and just indulged in the 1929-1946 Classics a week ago... I wonder though, with the other Fremeaux Volumes out so far (2, 3, and 4), has anyone done comparison to the Hot Fives box? The first few Hot Fives sides turn up on Fremeaux Vol. 3, but most of the Fives and Sevens seem to be on Volume 4 of the Fremeaux series - thing is, the tracklist is different from the Columbia (which is not entirely chronological, while I assume the Fremeaux is), so it's a bit of a drag to really check out if Fremeaux Vol. 4 contains anything that's NOT part of the Columbia set. Has anyone done that comparison before? And what if there's material on the Fremeaux Vol. 4 that's not on the Columbia, is that material good enough so I'll still need the Fremeaux? Anyone?
  10. It is on Collectables but it has all the personnel information, original liner notes, etc. For those interested, Patton only plays on 3 tracks (Oh Gee, Twist City & Renee), the other tracks are Hank Jones either on piano or organ. Thanks! Sounds good enough to this fan of Griffin's! I only saw sealed copys, I think... will look for this someday.
  11. Got that one as "Locking Horns" on a 32 Jazz CD reissue - indeed not bad! As for that box set - another of those stupid best ofs with some prev. unissued titles, so everyone has to buy it... I guess I'll rather get the two latest Premonition albums first. Since I last posted here I found the two Nessa/Chief albums and bought three of the Steeplechases - all mighty fine music there!
  12. As for Braith and Wilkerson, why not try your luck in finding the Connoisseurs? Both 3 albums on 2 CDs, both nice packages, to me both not essential in any way, but pretty enjoyable (the Wilkerson somewhat less). The Vick is terrific, that's for sure! The others I'm not familiar with (except for The Big Gundown, but that's not a Patton sideman album either... Spillane I never heard, but again my curiosity is piqued here!) Let me know what you think of the Jordan and the Griffin (isn't the Griffin also on a Collectables CD? One of those where on the cover you get no information at all, rather dubious-looking - which is why I never cared to check it up on the internet so far...)
  13. Sad news indeed One of the things I have coming my way from the flurry of orders I sent in (after receiving this year's bonus grant... ) is the Collectables twofer pairing Ganley/Ross' "Jazz Makers" with a Joe Castro Quartet album (feat. Teddy Edwards). Glad to finally go legit on the "Jazz Makers", that's a mighty fine album!
  14. I noticed that it appeared in both Last Chance and Running Low, not sure if that's the usual form. These pre-war Mosaic wear very well I've noticed and are so well executed. Yes, and in this case I noticed the first three CDs all being 70-75 minutes long, so they were kind to make this a 6 and not 7CD set, too (the rule seems to be that discs clock in around 60 minutes, no?)
  15. Joyeux anniversaire, Claude!
  16. My Hodges & Prima/Manone package was finally delivered two hours ago... big relief! Now halfway through disc two of the Prima/Manone - great one so far, glad I got it!
  17. 1 of 10 is otherwise also known as 10%, so go figure... Right, what about the added free shipping though? I guess it depends on how many items you are ordering... $15 max... never mind my rambling... sorry, forgot about that... shipping is hilariously expensive for us yurpeens, even if they offer free shipping in the US, they charge something like 30$ for a 100$ order and from there it goes up a $ or two with each CD you add... and their FAQ site still says they don't ship internationally anyway...
  18. Thanks for reminding me... I tell you, it will be hard to control yourself once you'll stand in front of that shelf, I spent an hour there on Saturday, had my Penguin guide with me and some notes I took over the years... Ordered some from JPC, all on sale: Depart - Reloaded (ACT) Joachim Kühn - the piano solo album (ACT) Brubeck - Ret Hot & Cool or whatever it's called (Sony/Legacy) and the NY Contemporary Five Storyville CD (wanted that one for a looooong time) I was there yesterday. You were right, I really had a hard time These are the spoils: Earl Hines And His Orchestra: 1934-1937 (Classics) Johnny Guarnieri: 1944-1946 (Classics) John Kirby: The John Kriby Sextet 1939-1941 (Columbia, 2 cd) Andy Kirk And His Twelve Clouds Of Joy: 1936-1937 (Classics) Mills Blue Rhythm Band: 1934-1936 (Classics) Flip Phillips: Together Flip & Woody (BBC) George Wein: The Magic Horn (RCA) Various: Swing Trumpet Kings - Harry Edison, Buck Clayton, Red Allen, Roy Eldridge (Verve, 2 cd) The overall price was Swiss Francs 114 (roughly the same in $), making it 11.40 Francs per disc, not bad. And the postman brought these: Art Pepper: The Hollywood Sessions (Galaxy) Atsuko Hashimoto Organ Trio: Time After Time (Thousand Days) feat. Jeff Hamilton The Kirk I had already... I took the two following volumes! As for Kirby, I was considering both the Classics and that 2CD set but instead got the Circle 1CD transcription disc - I've had no Kirby at all before and wasn't sure how much to get... the Swing Trumpet Kings I got from an Amazon Marketplace seller a while back (and the Eldridge album is of course in the Mosaic) - the Sweets/Clayton is fantastic! (The main reason I wanted to get it, as Sweets never really got the treatment he deserved from Verve... there was the VEE double, then the LPR, plus one album on this 3-on-2 set and one on the Webster 3-on-2 set... I haven't checked what else he did for Verve, but a box with all of this would be great!)
  19. No idea, but they did re-unite last year (from the site I linked on the first page):

  21. thanks for the bump - missed this before!
  22. I did hope (and think) so, but still taking a step back I felt stupid about posting that (it's pretty irrelevant anyway...) Did you pass by the store already? You'll have to ask specifically, I assume (the one guy that was there still recognizes me although I usually drop by once a year only, but he always pulls out piles of stuff not displayed... or just say you heard about the Classics from someone... I plan to pass by later this afternoon. They mention the classics on their website and encourage to ask for items not displayed. Will report back... Just remember, the month only just started, you'll need some money for food and other things, too!
  23. I think this is the only one I've heard - very good: Hamiet Bluiett - Im/Possible to Keep (2CD)

    Albert Ayler

Thanks, makes more sense than 500 alltogether... great box, and one of the very things so far that I've actually pre-ordered (or at least I ordered it just when it was released, can't even remember).
